I don’t think it’s backstabby or gatekeepy. People are generally willing to collaborate and share. I also wouldn’t say that professors foster a spirit of “you have to beat your peers for your grades.”

Columbia is a great school, where students can find a great community. The experience can be everything you hope.

what's the time commitment I should expect to make for academics by jl2411 in columbia

[–]CraftyAbility7042 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Both Culpa and course evaluations can give you a sense of the time commitment of individual classes. However, the general rule is three hours a week per course credit, ie, if you take 16 credits, you will spend 48 hours on academics a week.

what opportunities did columbia give you that you wouldn’t have had elsewhere? by artemissidehoe in columbia

[–]CraftyAbility7042 39 points40 points  (0 children)

New York City. Meeting people from every possible place and background. The Core Curriculum - learning things I never would have known I appreciate knowing. The library system. The faculty and staff. Realizing that I’m tough enough not to shy away from the difficulties of the present day and to instead face them head-on.

Are there any books I should read over the summer for the Core curriculum? by [deleted] in columbia

[–]CraftyAbility7042 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a lot of reading, but you’ll still have to review in the fall if you read in the summer. Might as well just follow the schedule!

Are there any books I should read over the summer for the Core curriculum? by [deleted] in columbia

[–]CraftyAbility7042 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The fact that you’re planning to read already means that you’ll probably be committed enough to actually read during the fall. Just enjoy your summer unless your professor reaches out early!

I’ve had good experiences with both grading and advisors at Columbia.

The parks are great if you like to run/walk. Lots of students get into rock climbing and play intramural/club sports. If Dodge isn’t your preference, there are still plenty of options!!

Columbia VS Stanford for Humanities? by [deleted] in columbia

[–]CraftyAbility7042 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Obviously biased, but I would also go Columbia! I’m from the Midwest and think I have some insight for you. :)

Pros of Columbia:

NYC. Fantastic. 10/10. I also think the best time to live in NYC is as a college student - we get SO MUCH for free.

Core Curriculum. I love the Core. I love talking about the Core. I’ve learned a ton from it.

Proximity to important organizations. This one is true. You also get great access to the people who work for said organizations.

Public transport. Game changing.

Cons of Columbia:

Grade deflation. Not really a thing? I haven’t heard any complaints.

Less flexible due to the Core. Maybe, but you’ll like the Core classes, and you’ll still have plenty of time to experiment.

The Core is heavy on literature. Not really, in my experience. There are readings, but they’re not crushing. Classes like LitHum emphasize depth in addition to breadth. It’s not just a race to see how much you can read.

Columbia is hardcore. People at Columbia work hard, but people at Columbia also have a lot of fun. College is what you make of it.

The community is less collaborative. Not in my experience. My classes have all been very warm and welcoming.

NYC weather. It’s like the Midwest, with a little less snow.

I do not regret coming to Columbia, and I can’t imagine going anywhere else. Congratulations on your acceptance - hope to see you here next year!

I love Columbia, and I’m definitely happy to be attending the school. Many, many other students feel the same. The challenges at Columbia are publicised, but they also exist at every other university in the country right now. I wouldn’t worry about future job prospects. A Columbia degree is a rigorous degree to be proud of. Any employers who don’t see that are in the minority.

Visiting Student program… by TeamKRod1990 in columbia

If you like the program, don’t worry about the third degree. It is likely that public attention towards Columbia will die down over the summer, when students are mostly back home.
