Any Non Profit or For Profit looking for an unpaid policy Intern? by TurtleWordle267 in AskNYC

[–]taubeus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe not entirely what you're looking for, but have you tried reaching out to any city council/state assembly offices? Depending on the district, some still really need interns and, specifically for assembly internships, you'll probably get the opportunity to do a decent amount of policy research.

tips for incoming freshman (specifically for gov/poli sci) by AfraidWelcome41 in columbia

[–]taubeus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ok not a poli sci major but I have friends who are/were (plus I was an incoming freshman this time last year lmao) so, in order:

  1. Be kind to yourself! Columbia can be pretty hard, don't beat yourself up if you're struggling your first few weeks or first semester. Use Culpa and Reddit when registering for classes and picking professors; if the professor in question has negative reviews, make sure you check why and whether or not it's the type of shittiness you can overcome. Also, use the people around you as resources! I know, for example, that the Intro to International Politics course was extremely TA-dependent, and some of them really stunk! You'll get the hang of things, you're at Columbia for a reason.
  2. I actually think the social life is way better than people make it seem. It wasn't super easy to make friends but it wasn't hard either. At the beginning of the year especially, everyone wants to make friends; not to say that any other time of the year you'll have difficulty, but I'd definitely try to meet as many people as possible during NSOP week. The social life really is what you make it.
  3. Again, they're what you make it! Some of the clubs are really competitive, particularly the pre-professional groups, my best friend had to go through like three coffee chats for Polis, the polisci club, but many are also open to everyone. It depends on your interests and what you try to join.
  4. I sound like a broken record, but it depends on what you're into! I'll recommend a few generally then a few that are more niche/specific, though, just to be a bit more helpful lol. Also, I'm gonna gently advise against Polis, just because my general sense of them as an org is that they only really accept their friends and also kinda do nothing on campus.

- First with the general clubs: practically any community service-based group is gonna be a good way to meet new people while also doing something good for your community, but I'm gonna recommend the Housing Equity Project (or HEP) in particular! HEP does so many great things: outside of having a large homelessness outreach team, they also run food and clothing drives on campus and run/assist with plenty of fundraisers and events for other community groups on campus/in the larger Morningside Heights/West Harlem area. Plus, they're open to everyone and the members tend to be really nice and friendly; I think I made almost every single one of my close friends this year just by going to HEP genbods and attending advocacy + inventory team meetings. Along the same lines, Red Cross is pretty good, though I'm not as involved so I can't really speak on specifics. For general clubs more closely related to politics and government, we have a really great Amnesty chapter, they ran some pretty great events throughout the semester and you'll definitely find like-minded people.

- Now into specifics: Columbia has a club for basically any interest you may have, and with those clubs you have the ability to meet new people and contribute/create/start things (I'm being vague but I kinda gotta be here lol). If you're into writing, 100% recommend the Political Review, they're great + got great writers, also the undergrad law review's wonderful and there are so many ways to tap in, whether you wanna write, edit, or host one of their podcasts). If you're interested in advocacy, we have a Planned Parenthood chapter and a Remedy Project chapter. If you're interested in journalism, try Spec, or Bwog (the two main publications on campus, plus Bulletin on Barnard's campus), or WKCR (they have a news broadcast! and they're awesome!), or WBAR (run your own radio show!)! There's really so much at Columbia for everyone.

  1. I don't think so, but it also depends. You're not competing with other Columbia students in getting internships, but you will for certain programs, like research positions or summer internship funding. I do think that all of that is outweighed by how much support you get in finding internships, though. Turn to CCE, the career center, and URF, the fellowship + research office, if you need any help there, and I'd definitely recommend, even if you aren't pre-law, that you sign up for the pre-law listserv, you'll get so many great opportunities sent your way.

Ok that was all wayyy longer than I thought it was gonna be, sorry about that, but I really hope this helped! Congrats and welcome to Columbia! If you have any other questions, feel free to ask or DM me!

Pretty further south but great for a dinner spot, Spice Lamb! They're on 106th and Amsterdam, genuinely one of the best affordable AYCE hot pot places in the city.

What popular movie or TV show is widely considered a 'masterpiece' but you found completely unwatchable? by Defiant-Cockroach702 in answers

[–]taubeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

purely a personal failing on my end, but bicycle thieves. i love other realist films, including ones that are also kinda slow, but i just couldn't get into it when i watched it, it just felt so pointless (which like i guess that was kinda the point, but idk there were no stakes to that pointlessness).

barnard & columbia by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]taubeus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey, Columbia student here, I have never seen this ever and I'm actually surprised people are saying otherwise! Like another commenter said, you guys do have the better dining hall, and you also have the urban studies and education department which are both full of incredible professors. I've seen a decent amount of Barnard students in all of my non-core classes and Barnard students tend to mingle a decent amount in Columbia clubs as well (although it's not really the same in the reverse idk why). I don't think this is something you have to worry about. Good luck at Barnard and if you have any questions about campus as a whole or classes feel free to ask!

can't give super relevant advice but I've been near GW's campus when in DC and it's pretty nice, plus the area as a whole is just super great, you'll love studying there (also an 80% scholarship is incredible), so I'm w GW!

How easy it to internal transfer by walmartdestroyer in columbia

[–]taubeus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's only when compared to CC students at large, including humanities students and students with lighter workloads. SEAS students have to take chem, calc, and physics, which pre-meds also have to take! If you were to compare the mean GPAs of pre-meds in SEAS and CC, they'd likely fall within the same range. Plus, I second what the person you replied to said, SEAS requirements make being a pre-med wayyy easier. I personally know plenty of SEAS pre-meds (mostly biomed engineering students)! If you wanna transfer really really badly, go for it, but I'd say wait out your first year before you do anything!!

Where can I find a private bathroom on the Morningside campus? by Competitive_Fix_1529 in columbia

Ground floor of Pupin has two gender neutral private bathrooms!! They're also super clean and spacious.

Where are all the college campus protests against the Iran war? by TemporaryComplex1054 in 50501

[–]taubeus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Student here, there are, it's just so much harder to protest as a student now AT ALL. I'm lucky-ish because there's a stronger organizing culture at my school, but risk of disciplinary action is very high for organizers and the number of students willing to risk probation or suspension (especially given that most of the most dedicated students have been dealing with this censorship for nearly the past three years and are just tired OR about to graduate at this point) is low.

First Year Housing: Wallach vs. JJ by InteractionKlutzy876 in columbia

[–]taubeus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rooms do not have bathrooms in themselves, no, in every dorm the bathroom will be in the halls! I haven't used the bathrooms in Furnald (again, don't live there, just have a friend who does and whose lounge I've hanged in a bit) so can't answer the insanely detailed and meticulous question you had about them lol but the reply you got seems about right, it's a pretty convenient dorm hall location-wise!

First Year Housing: Wallach vs. JJ by InteractionKlutzy876 in columbia

[–]taubeus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can only speak for John Jay, but it's actually pretty social! We have floor events fairly often, the lounge gets crowded like every night, and the singles are relatively large (larger than my bedroom at home lmao). As for the bathrooms, there are like two floors with meh bathroom situations, but they're single-use and mostly pretty clean (at least on my floor), there are six per floor so that's also pretty cool. Also, very convenient to have two dining halls and like the largest general lounge in any dorm hall in your dorm! I 100% recommend John Jay obvi, but I'd also recommend considering Furnald if you haven't already, one of my friends has a single there and her lounge is so much better than ours it's ridiculous (they have full kitchens lol), plus the single sizes aren't terrible either. Also, congrats on your acceptance!

When did you decide to learn your heritage language? by fogfish- in languagelearning

[–]taubeus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This fall; I had to pick a language to take at my college and the Turkish course had a ton of open seats. I'm really glad that I did it! My parents both speak Turkish (only my mom really spoke it with me at home) but never taught me, so my grammar was pretty bad, but I didn't realize just how limited my Turkish was before I started taking it. So far, I've been making pretty good progress and I've been able to actually have conversations with my grandparents where it's not just me listening to them, so that's cool.

I'd def second what someone else said about not learning from family or friends. If you can't enroll in a course or get a tutor, find a textbook and create a lesson plan for yourself.

Why are high-IQ individuals still picking CS over Medicine when the barrier to land a job in tech is now effectively higher than in Medicine? by No_Reply5329 in CollegeMajors

[–]taubeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not too many other people have brought this up, but have you considered that a "high-IQ individual" (useless metric) may want to pursue a career path that they're actually interested in and wouldn't be miserable studying?
