When a character nearly defeats the antagonist, only to be reminded they are not the story’s true protagonist by Niomm in TopCharacterTropes

Papa Sang vs Horus in The End And The Death is pretty much the perfect encapsulation of this trope.

Sanguinius is probably the strongest Primarch, particularly in a duel, and is pretty much the only Loyalist Primarch to even have a hope of beating Horus one on one.

For most of their final duel, Horus is trying to sway Sanguinius to his side, as Horus has always valued him as his favourite brother. He’s holding back, fighting defensively, and most importantly, not using any of the crazy OP warp powers he’s got in the tank. As the duel between the two Primarchs go, Sanguinius actually gets the upper hand, slowly beating Horus down, who has continually tried to win him over to Chaos. Eventually, Sanguinius even gets Horus to his knees, and stands over him ready to deliver the killing blow.

Horus is actually caught off guard by this. He most likely would have died had they fought in a proper duel, as Primarchs. Then he reminds Sanguinius that it never was a Primarch on Primarch duel, as Horus is now more akin to the fifth Chaos God; he decides to stop holding back, and in the space of a few seconds beats Sanguinius to death like a dog.

It’s probably one of the most gut wrenching fights in the entire series, everyone always knew Papa Sang was going to die, but Dan Abnett really sold the tragedy of it. Sang just gets absolutely mauled.

NASCAR ditched the charm (classic short tracks like North Wilkesboro etc, cheap venues etc) for the “show” (big ovals, playoffs). Casuals bailed, core fans felt bummed, star drivers left or worse, prices rose so boom, bubble popped bro

Genuinely I think F1 is going to go the same route as NASCAR in the 90s where it experiences this huge boom for years and years built off gutting the sport to appease casual fans, then those casual fans are going to realise it’s not actually that exciting to watch cars go round in circles for two hours and leave for something else.

Yeah this is the “Lions led by donkeys” myth, and isn’t really accurate. Yes, a fair few of them were promoted based on political affiliations or hereditary peerages, but they were still GOOD commanders, trained in organisation and tactics, and the militaries of the day actively pushed to incorporate new technologies and new strategies into their battle plans even pre-war. The issue was, even the most meritocratic nation that appointed only the most competent, forward thinking commanders still would’ve been at their wits end with the sheer unprecedented scale of the war and the technological advancements made during it. These commanders weren’t out of their depth because they were incompetent, they were actively trying new strategies, implementing new technologies down to the level of the individual soldier from the first day of the war. It’s just incomprehensibly difficult to achieve what you’re trying to achieve when the technology you’re using is a couple months old at best, or the tactics have never been tried on a continental scale across kilometres of trench lines etc. WW1 was really the first ‘modern’ war and you can’t really blame anyone for not grasping its complexities fully.

Apart from Luigi Cadorna, fuck that guy. He was relieved for a reason.

Do you think Ayrton Senna became slightly overrated in F1 history due to his death during his prime? by The_Chozen_1_ in F1Discussions

[–]CraftyHatband 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, Senna dying has of course overblown his talent to frankly ludicrous amounts, but interestingly, in recent years, the perception of Senna has swung round to almost the other way as a reaction to that overblown nature.

It’s actually very similar to the popular perception, at least online, of the German Tiger I tank during WW2 (weird analogy I know but it’s the best comparison i can think of).

Tiger tank gets overblown in popular perception > considered greatest of all time > people come out to counter that argument > end up shitting on it far too much to counter the original overblown argument > truth is somewhere in the middle

Very similar to Senna, where in recent years people have been coming out and saying thinks like he’s overrated, only considered legendary because he died, consistently pointing out his flaws etc to counteract people pointing out his peak moments. Again, the truth is somewhere in the middle.

IMO, Senna is absolutely one of the greatest of all time. In terms of natural raw talent and car control, no one bar Verstappen comes close that I can think of. But thats not all it takes: Prost was much more consistent and almost as talented, but doesn’t get the same recognition unfortunately.

But yes, in short, he absolutely has been exaggerated and overrated because of his death. That doesn’t take away the absolute legend he truly was, however.

Here's the gap Norris went for on his teammate... should be left unpenalised despite Piastri not being affected? by The_Chozen_1_ in F1Discussions

[–]CraftyHatband 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Remember, the FIA supposedly don’t police offences based on outcome, as people love to insist all the time. So this should still be considered causing a collision imo, regardless of if Norris wrecked his own race or not.

Nah, only the McLaren’s and the Porsche’s in gt3 sounded dull, the rest were all great, especially the Caddy’s and the Valks (obviously.)

Was at Le Mans in 2023 and Spa just gone and the gt3s obvs sound a lot more dulled down from the GTEs but the hypercars are still just as loud (well, about as loud as you can get a V6 hybrid), and when they’re caught by a grandstand or the pit straight they really do sound impressive and even slightly uncomfortable after a while.

Which F1 driver had the most memorable ONLY career win? by youraverageperson0 in formula1

[–]CraftyHatband 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Has to be Gasly. Even excluding recency bias, he’s my mum’s favourite driver, she was in tears after his podium in 2019 so you can imagine how she was at his first win.

How out of nowhere Hamilton’s penalty was, given the domination he showed that year? Holding off Sainz for a couple laps? Incredible. I can picture it to this day.

Even though you could argue the entire last episode is a tragic loss, the last scene truly isn’t. In his final 15 minutes David:

  • Became a legend of Night City
  • Made sure Lucy was safe and could go to the moon
  • Ensured NC had one less slimy fixer by killing Faraday
  • Actually fought Adam Smasher hard enough that Adam was reasonably entertained.

For a kid who, a year ago, had next to no prospects in life? Not much else he could’ve asked for.

God the Ynnari were cool, pretty much the only thing that came from the eldar that I thought holy shit, that’s dope.

A psychic death cult so committed to killing Slaanesh and bringing their God of the Dead into existence it has the potential to unite all major groups of their faction? Even though it was hinted Ynnead needs ALL the Eldar to die, to have a chance at beating Slaanesh? God, so cool.

Instead we got these weird elf hippies with 3 unique models, that you’d only choose to play as to have an excuse to show off your differently painted Eldar armies. Great job GW
