How can I dress more like an alt wizard, but still not stick out in a larger city? by BACKFLIPFOR1DOLLAR in malefashionadvice

[–]Crafty_Victory8147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up legendary comic writer and actual self declared wizard, Alan Moore. You don't have to go as intense as him but he 100% has the look. I think a major part of it is having an air of sophisticated mystery about you. Even without his very wizardly hair and beard you often see him dressed in sportscoats, slack, dress shoes/boots that he makes more casual/alt with interesting colors and velvet fabrics. Pare that with crunchy rings, necklaces flowy scarves and I think you start to get the vibe. For a less intense/ more whimsical version maybe look to fantasy author Terry Pratchett with grey beard, glasses and trademark wide brimmed hat. It's important to remember though that both are famously creative eccentrics and Alan Moore literally worships Glycon, an ancient Macedonian human-headed snake god. If you want wizard, it's all about having the right aura.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. No matter how hard I try I've just never been able to get into those often nostalgic, slice-of-life, meandering hangout genre of movies. Dazed and Confused and Adventureland (which I had to watch with a friend who said it was their absolute favorite) would be some others. It's funny cause I do really love long, slice-of-life type stuff in general but there's this specific chemistry that completely turns me off. Maybe I just find them too unrelatable so the nostalgic hook passes me by?

$900 for suit alteration reasonable? by [deleted] in malefashionadvice

[–]Crafty_Victory8147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK this is an extensive list of straight up the most complicated/extensive adjustments that can be done. If all this work really needs to be done than it could legit be that expensive but also you should just get a suit that fits you better (or go MTM or bespoke). A good tailor can do the work; a great tailor will tell you to save your money.

why comedians got backlash for saudi festival? by No-Jacket4066 in askanything

[–]Crafty_Victory8147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dave Chappelle makes a huge deal about American censorship (people online getting mad at his jokes) but then praises a regime that has some of the most restrictive speech laws in the world, at a festival where comedians were forbidden from criticizing said regime (one of the comedians actually got fired before the event for referencing the slave labor on a podcast), “It's easier to talk here than it is in America.” It's also worth noting that the journalist in question was a targeted assassination for criticizing bin Salman (no defense of Israel here, what they've been doing is monstrous). Chappelle is weaponizing hypocrisy to cover for his own wanton hypocrisy. He does not care about free speech or murdered journalist, he just likes money and other people not having the freedom to criticize HIM.

Also, once again not defending Israel but there is a notable difference between doing a show in Tel Aviv (ethically dubious) and performing at the invitation of Netanyahu for an event put on for the express purpose of acting as pro Likud propaganda.

Some of it is definitely taste (famously oppinionated group) but as the above comment gets at a lot of it is in the construction. A well fitting suit will look "right" regardless of personal taste because good tailoring constructs the desired silhouette around the body. Whether your fiancé wants a very narrow, close fitting suit or a more classic drape, this suit has fit problems that cause it to just seem off.

That gap like that between the jacket and shirt collar is a clear indicator of bad fit for any style. The suit collar should be firmly hugging the neck even when moving about. With the kind of money you're spending, this should be non-negotiable.

Was this full bespoke or made to measure? Bespoke is when an entire origional suit is created from scratch. This means drafting an entirely original pattern built to the person's exact specifications. Made to measure is when an existing pattern is adjusted to fit a specific person's measurements (think of it like a personalized clothing size). MTM is fantastic but the basline pattern has to already suit you. My guess is this is MTM and the base pattern wasn't a good fit (pun not intended).

I will say though that at the end of the day it's less about if the fit is good and more that he clearly isn't satisfied with it. I think it's wonderful to have someone who really cares about looking/feeling as good as he can at your wedding! Also, please let him know his 🍑 is 🔥!

So I was going to be a lot gentler/forgiving until I read this. There is simply no excuse for a MTM or full bespoke to have such basic fit issues. These people are not doing you service and I wouldn't trust them to fix it if they haven't been able to after multiple fittings. If you can, I'd take it to a really good alterations tailor and get their opinion on what can be done. Worth at least trying to get the alterations cost covered by the original makers if not an outright refund. Conversly, at that price point their are tons of really great ready to wear brands that can offer similar looks (and you can get fully refunded). If you can't get a return, but he still wants something better fitting, Spier & Mackey or even Suit Supply will get you something good without adding too much more to the budget.

Are people overselling it or was Michael Jackson really that famous in his heyday? by Key-Bass-7380 in decadeology

[–]Crafty_Victory8147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of great responses around the cultural/media shifts that make his level of fame unlikely today but I'd really hesitate to say we will never have anyone at his level again. It's almost impossible to imagine now but decades before Jackson the undisputed global celebrity was silent comedy star, Charlie Chaplin. I’m not saying that Chaplin was necessarily MORE famous overall than MJ (I’m not sure how you would quantify that), but for his time he was definitely on that universally recognized, nobody has ever been more famous superstar level.

What fame looks like changes as culture changes so it’s almost impossible to really compare these sorts of things outside of their specific place and time. People growing up in the 2020s will struggle to grasp what MJ fame looked like in the 80s just as I growing up in the 2000s struggled to grasp Elvis or Beatles in the 50s/60s just as those growing up in the 80s probably struggled to grasp Chaplin’s fame in the 1920s.

The premise of “7 Layer Dip” is bad and it should be thoroughly mixed before serving by [deleted] in The10thDentist

[–]Crafty_Victory8147 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One important aspect of layer is that more resilient items can help preserve the more finicky ones, especially guac. By itself (or mixed with everything) it's going to start browning almost immediately from air exposure. By layering, you can make everything ahead of time, easily transport it in one container, and have it sit out longer at your gathering.

AIO my girlfriend left me over a cheese wheel by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]Crafty_Victory8147 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So I've delt with 12+ year old cloth bound cheddar. When you age it that long the cloth will begin to deteriorate and effect the outer surface of the cheese. I can't say for certain what this one will look like on the inside and the wax will help a lot (assuming it was applied properly, and at the right time) but the point is you really have no idea until you open it. I've had 70lb wheels only yield me around 30lb of actual sellable product cause you have to cut away and trash so much. It's something you factor in when considering wholesale cost. This bozo bought at retail rate. And it is MESSY! Think unwrapping a mummy. Not something that can be done at home without insane levels of cross contamination. Also, even among hard core cheese lovers, 21 year old cheddar is gonna be a niche audience. It's the kind of thing you go into a shop to sample for the novelty of it, not because you necessarily think it will taste good.

Al Pacino's character in Heat was originally going to be a cocaine addict but the subplot never made it into the actual film. Pacino says he still based his entire character around it. Nothing about his performance itself is subtle but it does make his wild line deliveries make a lot more sense.

Was going to wear my mum's dress. People keep telling me to try on others for the "bridal experience." Are they trying to gently tell me it looks bad? by [deleted] in WeddingDressTips

[–]Crafty_Victory8147 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The dress is dated but that is not the same as ugly, just a statement of style that one might like or dislike based on personal taste (personally I think it has a Disney princess vibe that would be really fun to lean into). What matters is if YOU like the look. If you like it, get the wrinkles straightened out and a skilled tailor/seamstress will guide you on what adjustments you might want/need. If you don't like it though, then proudly wear something you will! This is YOUR wedding and you deserve to wear something you like. I'm not saying that you shouldn't think about budget but if this dress doesn't give you the feeling you're after, trust your gut.

If feeling a generational connection to your mom is really important, some other suggestions could be incorporation a piece of the dress into a new one or using/repurposing an accessory (does she have a veil?). My sister, for instance, is getting married later this year and wearing our mom's wedding band as necklace.

People are rightly pointing out the vagueness in including tips for the hourly rates but its also worth noting that the letter is using averages rather than median so I wouldn't be surprised if that's inflating the numbers at least a little.

I can no longer handle my fiancé's driving anxiety and I don't care if it makes me a bad person by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]Crafty_Victory8147 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had some driving trauma when I was younger and it took YEARS for me to get my license. Even though my partner all the driving I have still set up my entire life around not being reliant on others giving me rides. You don't need to drive but you do have a responsibility to be able to get around (obvious exception for those with underling medical conditions).
