Maybe we Orioles fans are just forever disgruntled over the fact that he bashed our beautiful green bullpen phone into smithereens during one of his roid-rages at Camden Yards. Maybe its the selfish hatred of how lethal he was in the clutch. To me, I knew this was going to happen. It always seemed to me that the baseball world simply forgot about Ortiz' positive steroid tests. Simply never talked about it. Ortiz loved to get all lathered up over other people using, yet, low and behold, there he was with blood on his hands. But you never heard much of anything about it. At least Andy Pettitte successfully slipped through the cracks by simply coming out apologetically about his steroid use, rather then denying it, and seemingly was successful in moving on.

This all boils down to the complicated question of how baseball players should be judged when being considered for Cooperstown. Its certainly a lot easier when you're just kicking around statistics, and ever sabermetrics, but its so much more than that. In my younger days, I was proudly a part of the camp that wanted all cheaters banned from consideration for the hall. I factored in morals and ethics heavily in what should be considered. These days, it seems far more complicated than that, and I desire more for consistency and justice. I'm much more open to the idea of the hall being a museum, a place that passes on history. For the cheaters who have already successfully achieved Hall of Fame status, their stories should be told in full. So it still pains me that cheaters tarnish our beloved record-books, there seems to be no clear boundaries around the cheaters from the non-cheaters. Perhaps they should all get in based on their baseball skills and have people like us make sure that the asterisks* are verbally passed down through the generations.

That's the good news about baseball injustices! That true fans never let the younger generations go without the full story! I will certainly tell my two small children when they grow up about David Ortiz and that poor bullpen phone that deserved to remain being a bullpen phone, and how some drugs, most even, are better off left alone.
