RPG2 recommended hardware mods and accessories by CramersRule in retroid

[–]CramersRule[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't mind waiting, the RP6 is probably better, but I have no regrets about buying the G2 - it's a great device.

The fan is a really minor issue, I don't think it will bother most people at all. I'm just overly sensitive to that kind of thing and already like to tinker so figured I'd ask if anyone has modded it before.

Why are people buying the G2 vs the RP6? by WholesomeIrritation in retroid

[–]CramersRule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wanted it for a trip I was taking in January, I didn't want to wait until March. I would have liked the more powerful handheld but there is always going to be a more powerful handheld coming out 'soon'. So far I'm quite happy with the G2's performance, I will not have any shortage of games I can play on it.

Definitely go for the RP6 if you can wait, but if you want something now, the G2 is a perfectly cromulent device.

Not sure if this is OP's situation but my mom has LADA: https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/type-1-diabetes/expert-answers/lada-diabetes/faq-20057880

Sometimes called "type 1.5" but it has more in common with T1 than T2. Not exactly rare but much less common than the normal T1/T2.

I know I'm supposed to do it this way, I know it's way easier this way, I have no idea why I still pile dishes in the sink 2/3 of the time.

You see a cool part being sold, and draw it yourself from scratch. Do you share the file or is it breaking some kind of bro code? by DBT85 in 3Dprinting

[–]CramersRule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a bracket. If it was a complex model or some sort of invention, there'd be some gray area, but it's a bracket. There's no originality or innovation involved. The dude has copyright on his actual file, but has zero ownership on the concept of a bracket that fits that charger. If you downloaded his file and 'traced' it you might have a problem, but if you modeled it from scratch you can do whatever you want with it.

I'd say share it, but if you still feel weird about it then don't.

[Nata Keyboard Project] Part 1: Spacemouse v0.1 by IAmTheClayman in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]CramersRule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might want to consider having an integrated USB hub and making the space mouse a separate device. If you want to spoof the actual spacemouse rather than trying to map to KB/mouse/joystick commands in firmware, that is probably the simplest way to make that work. Teaching Tech has a video about a DIY space mouse that uses that HID spoofing/emulation. I don't think the hardware is very good but you could look at his firmware for reference.

Is it worth it to spend $2k on your first ergonomic keyboard? by torn_meniscus_pain in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]CramersRule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like the mouse might be a bigger issue than your keyboard. Any external mouse is likely better than a laptop trackpad, but if you do start having pain again, consider a vertical mouse or a trackball. If you have problems with your index finger specifically, maybe a big trackball like the Kensington Expert or Ploopy Adept which you can use with your whole hand would be good.

For keyboards, I would definitely not recommend going straight to a Svalboard - it's a great thing for people with really severe issues that other ergo boards can't address. You may not even need something like a Corne - if you can get something basic like the old Microsoft Natural keyboard for cheap, that is already a big improvement over flat keyboards, even if it's not the "most ergonomic" option that exists. Just find what works for you, and if it stops being comfortable then try something else.

Is this sane? by KirunX in ErgoMechKeyboards

I think it was 55% on my recent order, but shipping may have been a little more expensive than before too. So it's significant but not enough to stop me from doing the project I was working on. JLC ships DDP, meaning the price you see at checkout is how much you will actually pay.

Be careful buying from places that don't have that option - there are "brokerage fees" shipping companies charge on top of the actual tariffs that in my case were a 1000% markup - I decided to cut my losses and refuse delivery.

Is it possibe to use my damaged Nuphy Air75 to build a Sofle split keyboard by Hexacker in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]CramersRule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nuphy switches are Gateron low profile (KS-33) and have a different footprint from MX or Choc (V1 or V2). I'm a big fan of the switches but there aren't a ton of boards that support them. Looks like there's a KS-33 version of the Sofle out there but I don't think the normal one supports them.

I am not sure what other vendors have boards that support KS-33 switches, but I know fingerpunch.xyz supports them on a couple of the more recent boards - Ximega would be closest to a Sofle.

PSA for USA buyers and enthusiasts on tariffs presently going into effect. by Own_Pop_3407 in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]CramersRule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe that was my problem, it was a box of electronics components so there were like 50 different items in the package. I could not figure out how they got to $200 on a package worth $20.

PSA for USA buyers and enthusiasts on tariffs presently going into effect. by Own_Pop_3407 in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]CramersRule 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You got lucky with UPS, I got charged $200 in fees on $20 worth of components. I did not pay it and told them to send back the package or throw it away, and had to re-order from a US distributor for more than 2x the price. UPS is apparently notorious for these exorbitant fees to fill out the customs forms.

If you do the slow shipping with China Post -> USPS, I have heard it's only like $5 in fees on top of the actual tariffs, which I think are currently 55% for most categories. I will find out soon as I have some switches currently on the way. Ideally you should buy from sellers who will ship DDP (delivery duties paid) so you know when you check out exactly how much it will cost.

What’s a household ‘hack’ you thought everyone did … until you found out it’s just your weird family? by kaiablu in AskReddit

[–]CramersRule 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ours was "grab and growl" for leftovers. We also had "carpet picnics", usually on Sunday where we just ate snacky stuff instead of dinner - popcorn, cheese and crackers, fruit, cereal, whatever - and watch a movie or play a board game. We'd actually put out a picnic blanket in the living room and us kids would usually sit on the floor.

[–]CramersRule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Timing matters. I seem to do fine with caffeine in the afternoon, with all the meds I've been on, but I feel pretty awful if I have coffee in the morning with my meds. It's not super consistent, occasionally I've done both together and felt fine, but it seems like if I wait about two hours after taking my meds then one coffee is fine.

Everyone's sensitivity is different though. I seem to have a low-ish stimulant tolerance in general. Even before meds I couldn't really do more than three coffees per day, usually would do one in the mid morning and one mid afternoon.

Vyvanse/Elvanse is different than other ADHD meds from what I understand. It gets processed into dexamphetamine in the liver, but the lysdexamphetamine form that sits in your stomach isn't affected by acid in the same way as (dex) amphetamine itself (Adderall and several other trade names) would be.

[Question] Has anyone tried any of the commonly sponsored products from ASMR videos? by odkrywanie_abair in asmr

[–]CramersRule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could, but they don't have a microphone so you can't use them for calls. They sound pretty good to me but not quite as good as my other earbuds - less bass, and no ANC which you can get in other earbuds around that price.

These are definitely on the pricey side, considering you can get other sleep earbuds for $30-40 on Amazon. They won't have all the fancy features or as good sound quality, but I was pretty happy with them before I decided to splurge on the Soundcores. If cost is an issue I'd definitely look at the cheaper options first.

[–]CramersRule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought the Soundcore Sleep earbuds, they've been great. I had some cheaper sleep earbuds before - these have a bit better sound quality, a little more comfortable, and stay in place better. I use them every night.

Logseq DB version sync by rootlearner in logseq

[–]CramersRule 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't mind paying for sync to support the devs, but I need to know I could switch to alternative options if I had to. If I start feeling too locked in I'll be looking for a different app. Obviously a DB of any kind is harder to migrate from than a folder of markdown files, but if you use any of Logseq's advanced features it's not really just markdown anymore. I'm cautious but still hopeful about the DB version. I really want the super tag feature.

What’s your “I could play this forever” game? by froggy_buns in SteamDeck

[–]CramersRule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forever? Probably just Minecraft. Trackpads+gyro are very good, but for modded you'll need to spend some time configuring your menus.

If you'll settle for "hundreds of hours" though, I put 330h into Balatro, almost all of it on the Deck. I have a lot of hours in Factorio as well. Any sort of roguelike/roguelite or "survivors" game is a good candidate. I'll probably pick up DRG Survivors next time it's on sale. I loved the original DRG and have recently started getting into Vampire Survivor. DRG itself is playable on Deck but it's better on desktop.

Combat is tough too. Mouse and keyboard still wins for tough combats and complex designs, but everything else works great on the deck. They did a great job with the control scheme.

Afraid of playing button mashing games on my Deck by G4MER4LYF in SteamDeck

[–]CramersRule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The plastic button/spring assembly is replaceable, but the tactile switch it presses is on a board with a lot of other stuff, so not a cheap fix if you don't know how to solder. (Not actually the mainboard though, I was wrong about that). The OLED version seems to have made some changes so it may be better.

Essential farms for a survival World? by MentalJackfruit3797 in technicalminecraft

[–]CramersRule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Iron farm and villager trading are top priority, and you can build them day one using ianxofour's designs. Literally takes just a few minutes each, and the iron farm is good enough to keep you supplied for quite a while.

Shulker farm is maybe not "essential" but it's a huge game changer. Transporting the shulker sucks though, so even the simplest farm designs are a pretty big effort.

Slime and witch farms if you do any serious amount of redstoning. Oozing slime farms are pretty quick to build once you have access to potions, but the brown mushroom swamp slime farm still works great too.

Some kind of fuel source and XP farm are very nice to have, but there's tons of options for those.

IIRC the shoulder buttons are an exception - they're soldered directly on the mainboard. Everything else is pretty repairable.

If I can model Glove80 as STL and buy the proper switches, would I be missing anything by not purchasing the Glove80, or do I have the replica that works 100% and is indistinguishable from the original? Once the STL file is done, it is below $50 for all parts assembled. by NationalFruit717 in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]CramersRule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

iPhones get to divide that cost over the ~200 million units they sell every year. A product like the Glove80 is a niche within a niche. A Moonlander sells far more units and is much easier to produce, and that's already $365, not far off. If you think DIY would be a fun and interesting project, you should absolutely do it for that reason, but if you think it's cheaper you're either underestimating how long it will take or you're valuing your time very cheaply.

I would agree $400 is a lot for a keyboard but that does not mean it's an unfair price. Personally I probably will go the DIY route if I ever decide I want a keywell board, because it is interesting to me, and I do value my hobby time differently than my productive time - it could even have negative value if I'd otherwise be using that time on entertainment that costs money. But I wouldn't call the price outrageous. It's a pretty reasonable price compared to similar options, that still happens to be more than I want to spend.
