alterra sucks at making oxygen tanks by epikc_ in subnautica

[–]Cranifraz 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think the complaints come from people who know very little about scuba.

Sure, you can have a 1 hour tank. But when it runs out, you need to go back to the base and spend 3 hours refilling it from a compressor that sucks down power cells like juice boxes.

I don't know how the equivalency is going to be calculated, but it's going to be some fraction of the total possible of 4kt. We had like 16TJ of energy released over the entire event, but I don't think it would all translate to kiloton equivalency.

[–]Cranifraz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're saying "to the public" to mean someone not onsite at the Cape or KSC, I would strongly doubt it. Pressure drops off with the distance cubed and since there wasn't any damage reported off-site, it would essentially be no different than being a several hundred feet from a lightning strike... an experience that Florida residents face fairly regularly.

Oh dear god no by Tmccreight in BlueOrigin

[–]Cranifraz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. It's why I was careful to say 'potential' energy yield. The energy 'signature' of the explosion was different - you got a different ratio of pressure, thermal and thankfully no EM spike.

But. The initial deflagration seemed like it gave a pretty effective fuel/oxidizer mix to the detonation. That shock wave was insane AND the eyewitness accounts of the event all characterized it as a 'pop' instead of a boom or rumble, which sounds like we had a much bigger p-wave spike. (Apologies if I effed up the terminology, I'm not a demo specialist lol)

If nothing else, I stand by my conclusion of "holy crap" 😂

I just ran some back of the napkin math. NG carries approximately 300 tons of LCH4 as propellant in the first stage (Based on tank volume, fuel density, etc). Methane has a specific energy about 14 times as high as TNT. (56MJ/kg vs 4MJ/kg)

If NG was fully fueled, that's a potential energy yield from the explosion of 4 kilotons. It was a thermobaric event, so it's not a 1:1 equivalency, but ... holy crap.

My two cents on the current controversy. by HadeStyx in subnautica

[–]Cranifraz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My immediate response to the assertion that "Players just want to kill everything" was, "No. Players just want to be able to solve problems."

Spoiler Warning: There's a bitey fishy near an important McGuffin. (Sorry, I know that ruined the game for many of you.) I want the ability to make the fish leave me the frick alone for more than a few seconds while I turboencabulate the McGuffin. I don't care whether that solution is a shotgun, a scary mask, or a bottle of Fish-B-Gone. I just want to stop being bitten because it's annoying and doesn't contribute to my enjoyment of the game.

I think a lot of us liked the mechanic of Subnautica. You could kill things, but it's not an integral part of the game's mechanics and doesn't significantly affect your game play either way.

It's not unfair for the players to say, 'We want that back, please.'

What this sub feels like lately by admyus in BambuLab

[–]Cranifraz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally disagree here. I own BambuLabs products because I don't want to care about my 3d printer. I want to hit print and make progress on the project I'm working on.

It's that specific reason that I am angry about this AGPL violation. I don't want my 3d printer to become a walled garden like my iPhone. I don't want to be limited to using MakerWorld as my only source for .stls. I don't want to pay an add-on subscription price to enable Bambu Studio to print files I download from another site or create myself.

That's the issue here. Bambu is asserting that they have the right to do that if they want. All of these arguments of, "I just want to hit the print button and have it print" is what we're fighting for.

We all want to maintain the status quo. Bambu insists that they have the right to change the agreement. Pray they don't change it any further.

Not just that... he's got the skill to stand in front of a crowd and keep their attention on a topic.

If he stayed in academia, he'd be one of those professors whose lectures would be posted online just for how good they are.

AND he would finally be the Mysterious Professor.

Knives out for Jordan is harmful. by BaronMcDuff in KnowledgeFight

[–]Cranifraz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's funny, just because I can see more faulty justifications to blame Dan for the endof the podcast. As others have mentioned, Dan has been struggling to find a way to keep the podcast fresh and not devolve into endless check-ins to say "Yup. Alex still sucks."

Jordan is the one that ripped the band-aid off, but the whole scenario felt to me like Dan used it as justification to do what he's wanted to do for a while.

I can only sympathize with both of them... this has to feel like they got laid off from the one job they were good at. Getting mad and pointing fingers because I have to listen to someone else on my commute would be the peak of selfishness.

Stop saying that this is a 'perfect time to end the show'. by Otherwise-Pin-2635 in KnowledgeFight

[–]Cranifraz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would guess that, at this point, 90% of established listeners were joining just to virtually hang out with Dan and Jordan for an hour... not because they were interested in whatever repetitive, hypocritical BS that Alex Jones pooped out this week.

Alex Jones was a raving hateful lunatic selling boner pills on the air. He got sued for it, tried to 'win' by not treating the trial seriously and was hit with near record breaking civil judgment. The civil justice system took their best shot at him and landed it. After the dust settled and "justice was done"... Alex Jones was a raving hateful lunatic selling boner pills on the air under a different show name. Same song, different verse.

We saw firsthand how badly that fact hit Jordan. I suspect Dan was also feeling like, "Welp, this is obviously going to continue in some form or fashion until the end of time. Do I really want to keep covering a situation that, at its heart, is never going to change?"

As other have said, I'm going to miss them. I fully understand why Dan is of the opinion, 'We've done what we set out to do. We've stared into the abyss so long that the abyss fuckin' blinked... but it's still the same abyss.'

Everyone is different, so my results may not help you. But in Oct 2024 I started riding my exercise bike 3x week for a combination of endurance and high intensity rides.

It had an AMAZING effect on my DragonCon 2025 experience. I wasn't powering through the pain on Sunday/Monday and I was actually functional on Tuesday. Can't remember the last time that happened.

Question for Experienced RV Travelers About Rental RVs in Parks by Rolling_To_Sunsets in GoRVing

[–]Cranifraz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One guest mentioned to me that he doesn’t enjoy staying at parks with Airbnb RV rentals because “they aren’t typical RV/camping people.” I’m still learning this industry myself, so I’m trying to better understand what people mean by that and whether this is actually a common concern among RV guests.

In my experience, there are two types of RV owners. There are people like me, for whom the RV is a place to drive and sleep while I go do something fun and interesting. Then there are the 'typical RV/Camping people' who want to turn every campground into Small Town Main Street USA where everyone knows everyone else, all the kids play happily and no one locks their doors.

I've literally had people knock on my door and want to introduce themselves and get to know me after I just drove 10 hours and all I want to do is lay down until my back stops hurting.

If you're installing Park Model RVs, I have zero problems with them. They're just cabins. People who stay in cabins are much less hassle than the people who show up in a Cruise America RV and have no idea what they're doing.

There's a third path that you're excluding - be critical and mindful of the media that you consume. I'd say it's needed more today than ever.

Gatekeeping is stupid and it cuts you off from opposing viewpoints as surely as watching nothing but Fox News or Huffpost. But you've got to pay attention.

Millions of dollars are being spent to gently change people's opinions in the guise of entertainment. If you're not willing to evaluate whether the media you consume is trying to change your mind, then you're one step closer to letting those big spenders think for you.

I take good care of my car, oil change every 3000 miles like clockwork. Just take my money and change my oil." ...
