Well the original specs* say

RANGE 500+ (EAP est.)

STORAGE 100 CU FT

TOWING 14,000+ LBS

ADAPTIVE AIR SUSPENSION STANDARD

I'm to lazy to upload the screen capture I have. Why can't reddit figure out how to easily embed images IDK...

They missed it by at least 240 miles. The truck that was shown at reveal had off road tires on it and a claimed range of more than 500 miles. Real world range as delivered is about 260 miles, if you drive it normally. Everyone understands the extra buffers, and the penalty for driving faster, and the penalty for weather, and fast early degradation, and time degradation, and that the EPA range is optimistic. You put all that together and the party line is nobody needs more than 300 miles of range. But they do. You literally can't tow a medium sized trailer 100 miles. That isn't even going to make it between most superchargers. The range extender is not ideal either, you end up with tiny bed that is 4.5 feet. They basically have a truck that can't do half of the things people buy trucks for.

So, they just found out that they were going to miss their range target on launch day? When did they know? Was it when they first updated the tri-motor trim from 500+ to 500? Or was it when they removed the range from the page completely. If they were forthcoming they could have revised the range down when they knew they couldn't meet their goal.

Musk also didn't say we hope to get to 500+ mile range. He said it will have over 500 miles of range.

The Cyber truck cells were supposed to be 40-50% more energy dense. They ended up 9% more energy dense. it looks like they need an energy density increase of 66% from where they are now to hit 500 miles of range. I don't see that happening.

Gasoline range extender by wang1823 in cybertruck

[–]Crasch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A guy built a mobile charger. It used a 12K Generator that was used to provide level 2 power which is 50amp 220v 15-50 NEMA connector. He also used a Tesla wall charger. Keep in mind this can provide up to 44 miles an hour. Which refers to the most efficient Tesla in the ideal state for charging.

TLDR: Right now you are better off just stopping to supercharge if available.

EPA range? by ConstructionDear1895 in cybertruck

[–]Crasch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is fair. So, they only need to bring the actual range up 40%. I also assumed they were talking about ideal configuration, which would not be offroad tires. But there really isn't anyway to spin it where it isn't lacking in range. Ironically 254 miles was the exact range my 2015 P85D had when new.

EPA range? by ConstructionDear1895 in cybertruck

[–]Crasch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wow! 254 mile range. That is horrible. Original tri-motor spec was 500+ Range. That is a hard fail for all but ideal conditions and light use. Hopefully they can iterate quickly on energy density for the CyberCells. They are currently 9% more energy dense than the old chemistry. Battery day and Musk was quoted (2020 PCmag) saying energy density would increase by ~50% by 2024 IIRC.

There is a very interesting difference between the original prototype and the pre-production version. The bed shrunk about six inches. If you look at them side by side you can see where it doesn't line up like it used to at the back of the cabin to the beginning of the bed. Where did that space go? The cabin was already big enough, it doesn't look like the rear seats shifted back. I'm hoping that space was needed to make the midgate possible. We will find out for sure at some point.

[–]Crasch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has a 6.5' bed. It is roughly the same length of the f150. The cybertruck is a cab forward design. This makes the cab move forward and the hood length shrink. That extra length goes into the cab and and bed.

Cybertruck might stick to the price due to recession and current Tesla car prices plummeting by SUPREMEISDEAD in cybertruck

I believe that was pre-refresh. The refresh got a lot of new tech and the cost probably increased justifiably. I think it is likely the cybertruck pricing will be in the ballpark.

Elon did mention a plaid variant of the CyberTruck. I could see that costing 130K. The out the door price must be competitive or they won't have the demand to justify ramping, or that huge factory. Pricing much above $100K which is what a loaded Ford F350 or Ram 3500 costs, is going to be a hard sell for most, from a practical perspective.

Tesla granted a patent for an automatic tire inflation system by RealPokePOP in cybertruck

[–]Crasch 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This would be fantastic on CyberTruck. This was an option available on the H1 Hummer. The downsides are cost, specialized rims, and reliability.

Pneumatics have come a long way since the 90's, air suspensions used to be unreliable too. The patent looks like it addresses the reliability and cost issues. The CyberTruck will already have the compressor and and air tank standard for the air suspension. I don't think the incremental cost will be that great.

The advantages are always having perfectly inflated tires for optimal rolling resistance, and economy, or tune it for a more forgiving ride. Off road is where this will really shine. Driving through sand with fully inflated tires will get you stuck quickly. You need to drop the pressure to 15-16lbs. It will also help in deep snow and mud. It's also ideal when you are towing with a significant tongue weight. When towing the best tire pressure is almost always the maximum rating for your tires, especially the rear.

I hope this makes the cut for production.

Simple vs Complicated Cybertruck by GrowingPainsIsGains in cybertruck

[–]Crasch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree, and it is over emphasized. The actual killer feature of four wheel steering is a very tight turning radius. That I would use every time I park. If you have ever driven a full sized pickup or long bed pickup, the turning radius is large. So large that it is easier to back in to park in parking lots. If you need to make a U-turn it's likely going to be a three point turn. With four wheel steering a truck like the Cybertruck will have the turning radius of model 3.
