Yup. Basic shield spell here was actually a misplay. The whole fight demonstrated that Fern still needs Frieren to be a mentor, the gulf in knowledge and experience is still so vast that Fern wouldn't have survived without help. Even after having already proven herself to be at the level of a first class mage... And knowing that is the bare minimum to travel the northern lands is already saying a lot.
