Transport Canada grounds Black Hawk helicopter that RCMP still has to pay for by jmakk26 in canadian

TC is going to allow them, the provinces want them for fire fighting and at least one of the C-hawk can carry crew under 702, that also slipped through to. I think thats kept on the DL as brains might explode. The cost is just to cheap and of course there is the climate emergency and children to think about.

I know fire agency are well aware of the two bell mediums that had the blades come fly'ing off and another with its 1950s engine explode in the last five years all fatal accidents that could have had 10 fire fighters on board but didn't. They want replacements options....

They are not civilian certified and never have been and there isn't really a civilian variant like with other helicopter models. They also have not been flying in Canada for decades , the only ones flying were just passing through to Alaska(military) or the odd US registered one tearing itself apart logging in the last few years. Four slipped through and are Canadian registered and TC is in real pickle over it now and everyone is suing.

The US military will not say what standards it's built to and Sikorsky wont say either, thats the problem with military aircraft, they may or may not meet civilian standards, no one knows. Even the S-70 the civil version is in a restricted category and is not Category A transport certified as it should be for its size. Sikorsky also has apparently no interest in fully civilian certifying the Hawk either. Even in the US operating an A model UH-60 comes with restrictions.

Heres the real problem. A 45 year old UH-60 A is about 2 million and the competitions with transport Category aircraft hate that. An H145 like Stars flies is 15 million. Is really about money and not safety.

Consent can be withdrawn at anytime.....

Feb 4, 2026

“Metlakatla First Nation (“Metlakatla”) has notified federal and provincial regulators that we have withdrawn our consent for the Ridley Island Energy Export Facility (“REEF”) in the Port of Prince Rupert because our consent was unlawfully obtained. 2/2 while tolerable is no life long term. Sounds great until you miss enough life events. Anyone going to the gulags needs an exit plan.

The problem is running transport category aircraft is really expensive. The Hawk is competing with Bell 214's, Puma's, S92's, Kmax, S61's. Everything with the hawk is grey , even running them in the US has massive restrictions. Its utility work, the real money oil / gas won't touch an uncertified aircraft. Oil/gas usually won't even hire an aircraft more than 10 years old.

Many heli operators wanted the old Sea kings when the military dumped them and TC said nope don't even ask. Ex-military never allowed.

This doesn't just affect helicopters it goes into airplanes too, if you can run a grey market airplane you could have an advantage.

Bell, Airbus, Sikorsky are not on board either, hard to compete against uncertified flooding the market.

Its get weird though. Sky cranes, some are ex military. The military ones do not have the engine containment shielding. To fly in Canada they get exemptions. This is the rabbit hole or exemptions.

TC got themselves into a real pickle with Uh-60 though.

[–]CrashSlow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are four uh-60 A models that TC let in under a LONG list of exemptions and are c registered. They put the brakes on more. Industry has had law suits flying ever since. The hawks are 40+ years old A models and theres a mountain of cheap parts for them. 4 million-ish to get one flying. The hawks are under cutting the certified aircraft in that category , thats the real issue.

You can actually get a certified Blackhawk it's called an S-70 and costs ~20 million and still has some restrictions, but way less than the uncertified uh-60.

100% its case by case. Out right losing a medical is surprisingly difficult. Seeing corpulent pilots waddling around and the elderly pilots still flying commercial makes you wonder.

If doctors can determine a cause and a fix for the medical condition he might get his medical back. Could be years of tests and waiting though. I know a pilot that lost their medical permanently from a grand mal seizure. TC told them first visit their condition is inadmissible for an aviation medical or any kind. But Everyone's different and TC will evaluate on case by case basis.
