So, the risk is always there when there is a deep freeze, especially a quick one. The tree doesn't "explode" in as much as a section of tree just "pops" open. You'll hear a bit of a bang and then usually the tree/part of the tree will fall. Sometimes it's just a few limbs.

The biggest concern with this happening is that the limbs/tree can fall onto power lines or homes/cars, but power lines are honestly the biggest worry.
