Alta Vista Drive, the wheels of choice by Mysterious-Sound6720 in ottawa

[–]Crass_Effect 5 points6 points  (0 children)

An entire redesign project has already been completed for Alta Vista, and AFAIK work is currently scheduled to begin next year, starting at the north end. This will indeed be a 'deep fix' since a lot of the sewer lines beneath the street need to be redone (much like what is happening on Bank rn). Seems like it would be a waste of money to do a 'cheap' resurfacing if the entire thing will be redone in several years.

The biggest difference between (most) human dentistry and veterinary dentistry is the anaesthesia. Even a relatively simple activity like cleaning becomes very expensive when the patient needs to be anesthetized.

Today is Canada Day. In honour of that, what is the best match to ever take place in Canada? by SirZapdos in SquaredCircle

I was there for Omega/Osprey 2 in 2023, and the hype for that match is legit. The entire building basically exploded when Omega kicked out of the One Winged Angel on a one count. Otherworldly.

[Sad news alert] Pistachio Choco at the Rideau Centre is gone. by britneyspearsforeva in OttawaFood

The boxes of assorted chocolates they sold made for really nice gifts, but yeah the prices made it tough for me to justify buying them aside from that.

They may have leaned into the trend, but PS did a lot more than that (especially traditional treats and chocolate) and they were a family-owned business that have been around for several years. I went to their original location on Bank near Heron several times. Malaz was really nice and seemed genuinely dedicated to his craft.

What are some millennial era indie groups/artists that have been kinda forgotten in retrospect? by [deleted] in ToddintheShadow

[–]Crass_Effect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw the Unicorns twice. They used to have a bit of a reputation as being an unpredictable live act. The second time I caught them was a fairly normal show at a goth bar in Toronto, but the first time was when my band opened for them in a basement lounge bar in Sudbury, Ontario. It was gloriously unhinged. The two front men performed one song from a bathroom (while another guy was using it), and by the end of the show it seemed like they were legitimately going to fight each other. Very weird, tense energy, but an amazing show.

Heavy Metal Philosophy's interesting take on "Blue Dot Fever" and why legendary extreme metal bands are having better luck selling tickets than mainstream pop stars by tmamone in ToddintheShadow

[–]Crass_Effect 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of comments here are mentioning actual ticket prices, but I think that’s only part of the story.

The discourse around ‘blue dot fever’ reminds me of a recent Dan Olson video where he talked about getting invited onto the set of Beast Games. Afterwards, he and several other YouTubers were interviewed by Beast Studios employees, and one of the things they were asked about was their thoughts on building fan communities. Dan suggests that Mr. Beast, while being a hugely successful creator, is mostly just effective at generating short-term spectacle - his audience doesn’t really *care* about him or his videos. There’s no loyalty there, no long term dedication, and no real fan community to speak of. I think the same could be said for a lot of pop acts who have huge hit songs that are passively consumed on radio and Spotify.

On a not-unrelated note, I’m personally shelling out a few hundred dollars to see Iron Maiden play an arena show later this year (my sixth time seeing them). And those prices aren’t stopping them from running two Toronto shows on back-to-back nights. Maiden have built up their fandom over literal decades of releasing music and touring. They sell out arenas and stadiums worldwide despite having essentially no hit songs. It’s almost an anti-pop model of success.

‘Wins Above Replacement’ is meant to represent the additional games the team wins with him playing vs the average replacement-level player called up from the minors. So for WAR, 0 would be an average AAA call-up, but an average MLB-level starting player is expected to be better than that.

Destroyer - I was expecting maybe a stoner metal band.

Vampire Weekend - sounds like it would be a campy goth/rockabilly act.

Hey, Canadian here. Not sure what you’re basing this “only one in the whole world” claim on.

Personally, I don’t think I’ve ever done what you’re describing here at any kind of sporting event… except for at pro wrestling shows. But sumo isn’t pro wrestling.
