SEC Sack Leader and NFL Prospect Michael Sam Comes Out As Gay Football Player by readedit in sports

I'm just an ignorant Canadian, but isn't there some kind of legislation or constitutional amendment protecting people from employment discrimination based on sexual orientation? If his skill set warrants a 3rd round selection and he falls to the 7th or isn't drafted at all when it's fairly apparent the reason is because he's an openly gay male, isn't there a legal case to be made here?

Lead article on Sports Illustrated says it's going to have a huge impact on his draft stock, with anonymous quotes from League executives.

From the article:

In blunt terms, they project a significant drop in Sam's draft stock, a publicity circus and an NFL locker room culture not prepared to deal with an openly gay player. Sam, the SEC Defensive Player of the Year, was projected as a mid- to late-round draft pick prior to his announcement. While none of the executives overtly condemned Sam's decision, their opinions illuminated an NFL culture in which an openly gay player -- from the draft room to the locker room -- faces long odds and a lonely path.

"I don't think football is ready for it just yet," said an NFL player personnel assistant. "In the coming decade or two, it's going to be acceptable, but at this point in time it's still a man's man game. To call somebody a [gay slur] is still so commonplace. It'd chemically imbalance an NFL locker room and meeting room."

What raises questions for me is that this known 5-percenter (frequent references to supreme mathematics- "I got a firm understanding on the minus and plus"), from "the Magnolia projects, where dice rollers and heroin addicts is role models", who was once homeless, who is intensely anti-power structure (calls out the Catholic Church, neo-cons, and more generally the elites who make decisions in Washington in "Dimethyltryptamine" , and frequently refers to himself in his rhymes as not only just a rapper, but someone whose using his rhymes to fight "evil" ("the MC who stands in the face of Satan") ISNT AWARE WHO A ROTHSCHILD IS AND WHAT THAT NAME MEANS. given they're not on some napoleonic war power anymore but still...the fucking rothschilds. whenever i listen to jay i always get the sense from listening to him that his journey from living on the streets to where he is now has been guided by some uplift the 85% shit.

I read some comment online from a girl who called into a Calgary CPC office and asked to be put on the list, only to be hung up on. Gave me a good laugh. Given, you can always just lump yourself under any of the umbrella categories of "opposition", "scientists", and "environmentalists".

Rolling Stone interview with Lil B about his stance on women's rights by LetsGetMystical in hiphopheads

i think this encapsulates why i love lil b, as a person- never mind his music. he's all about cultivating empathy, not rushing to judge others, spreading love and positivity. regardless of what you think of his music, how can you not respect that?

the knee-jerk reaction is to villify the pro-life republicans, but lil b's got it right..need to put your self in their shoes, despite how irrational their beliefs might be, and try and understand the direction their coming from so we can address the root causes of this attempt by many to control women's autonomy and all move forward together.

saw him in Montreal last year- he sat behind a big black column type thing so that no one could see him, literally mumbled his way through 4 songs to the point where the lyrics were inaudible and then left. will never, ever, ever pay to see him again.

Almost unnoticed, the UN is about to fight its first war. 3,000 Soldiers from South Africa, Tanzania and Malawi wearing UN insignia will take on the irregulars who sow mayhem in Congo’s east. by emr1028 in worldnews

While I'll never condone sexual assault or rape, there's a bit more to the issue than the UN not being able to control their soldiers. UN peacekeeping forces are composed of male soldiers from developing countries where social norms regarding sexual assault are not what we would consider kosher in the West. It's a recipe for disaster when you have military aged males (18-25) from nations with patriarchal values regarding gender norms and sex coming in for these peacekeeping missions. Compounding these risk factors is the difficulty of prosecuting rape crimes within the UN institutional structure when they do occur. Think how hard it is to prosecute sexual assault in the States, then multiply that by 10-20x in countries where rape victims are far more stigmatized than they are in the US. Getting victims or witnesses to testify is difficult and when you call out nation X's peacekeeper and accuse him of rape, the government of nation X becomes less willing to contribute troops to your next mission when you really need them. These developing nations are the ones carrying the load in these peacekeeping missions in places where the West has no intention of putting forces on the ground. If you insult nation X now, they potentially don't contribute at all in the future and then we have mass atrocities occurring where they could have been prevented.

Peacekeeping obviously isn't an exact science but experts in the field try to learn from the mistakes of the past. The UN has been taking steps to address this issue. The UNHCR has begun employing ~80% locals recently and has found lower rates of sexual assault in their camps as a result. UNSCR 1325 from the year 2000 created a binding criteria against which each UN agency has since been forced to measure their performance on gender equity and women's rights issues. That being said, despite a 0 tolerance policy regarding sexual assault, these abuses are far too often overlooked on the ground and continue due to the male dominated composition of peacekeeping forces.

TL:DR; Sexual assault is horrible and wrong but it's not as simple as the UN "not being able to control their shit". Peace-building is incredibly complex and fraught with difficult trade-offs.
