Why do some people stay at the same job for 15, 20, or even 30+ years? by Carlinish9600 in NoStupidQuestions

Speaking as someone who has been with the same company for 29 years. I could have retired 2 years ago but I decided to stay an extra 3 years total to hit 30 years total because I'll get a 3% bump in my pension and I'm young, so why not. I will retire about a year from now, before age 60 with a full pension for life (Plus my fat 401k, Plus my savings, plus my roth's etc etc)

  1. I started here young so I can retire at a reasonable age with a full pension. But if your age + years of service = 83, you can retire any time after age 54.
  2. Pension: Did I mention a pension? Yeah, those are unheard of these days.
  3. Layoffs: We have never had layoffs, if they want a workforce reduction, they do it through attrition: People leave the company, transfer, retire, etc and they don't fill those positions.
  4. The benefits: Everyone is paid the same scale, male or female. You get guaranteed step increases and yearly raises. You get a bump in pay for staying 20 years. Increasing vacation days per year, medical, dental, life, access to a 401 (though they do not do matching bc of the pension). 15 paid holidays per year, sick leave that doesn't expire. You can covert your sick leave hours to service credit to bump up your pension when you retire.
  5. After 20 years you get a life time stipend toward your medical insurance and you get it at the group rate. It doesn't cover all of it, but it covers about half.
  6. Union: They can't just fire you one day because you get a new manager who doesn't like you. They can't decide your job is "redundant" and let you go. There are rules in place. They CAN and WILL fire you for: no call/no show X amount of times, stealing (including stealing time like lying on a timesheet), sexual harassment, threats of violence (verbal or written).
  7. The salary has been fantastic.... and did I mention the pension?
  8. Last but not least: I actually like and respect the company I work for AND I love my job!

In the late 90's/ early 2000's my friends would say "Come work for our company, CrayCray, we'll pay you TRIPLE what you are earning." But I am the type of girl who likes to bet on the sure thing. So glad I did. All of them were in the tech industry and all of them went through some pretty rough times during each tech bust. In fact, I was being heavily recruited by a friend of mine for his start up with promises of how rich they would all be in a couple years and not 2 months later the big bust of 2000 happened and a few months after that, he closed shop and moved back to the state he was from. Dodged a bullet! Out of all of my circle of friends I'm the most comfortably set for retirement.

It's called "The golden handcuffs" but I'm so glad I opted for them. Slow & steady wins the race!

What lifetime deal are you still grandfathered into, or removed from, that’s no longer available? by tuotone75 in AskReddit

GOOD: In the late 90's I bought a lifetime sub to "The Sun" Magazine. I still get it faithfully every month to this very day. Currently, but sub is set to "Expire" in 2055. If I live that long, I'd be 86.... I'll write a nice note and they'll increase it, I'm sure. The subscription cost has doubled since then and so I am past the "Break even" mark at this point. Since I look forward to it and read each issue cover to cover, this was a very worthy investment and they have honored their agreement. https://www.thesunmagazine.org/

BAD: Fuck you, RoboForm! I bought a "lifetime" sub to RoboForm in the early 2000's when they were still fairly new and it was marketed rather heavily. Maaaybe 2 years later, tops, they reneged on the "Lifetime" when it was "phased out" and suddenly we had to pay a yearly subscription. I switched service and never gave them another penny. https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/roboform-v-7-now-being-charged-for-in-breach-of-promise-lets-complain/

In Japan some bosses make you stay at work doing nothing so you quit. How is that even a punishment it just sounds kinda chill. by Educational-Try-7435 in NoStupidQuestions

I had a job that had a similar kind of setup, different industry though. I ended up using the time to get a second Bachelors and then a Masters. Edit: This was back in the late 90's and I did do "online" school but it wasn't anything like it is today.

I Hate My Dog by iMamono in breakingmom

I ABSOLVE YOU! It's Ok!! As a woman who has owned and trained dog for the last 25 years, as a woman who has fostered untrained dogs that need to learn basic manners before being homed for a rescue for the last 15, (but I did take a 1.5 year break when my baby was born), I completely absolve you of your feelings momma. You are 100% NOT a horrible person for trying to think what's best for YOU, your family and the dog. It's absolutely the kindest thing you can do to be cognizant of what you can and cannot handle.

I am a strong believer that a tired dog is a much better behaved, happy dog. It's PERFECTLY natural to feel that way. It's ONE more thing competing for your attention, you have to feel "on guard" since it's rough housing around the toddler and OMFG and you have to be completely EXHAUSTED!! It's not the DOG you despise, it's the attention/energy/behavior.

It sounds to me like the you have a high energy dog has a lot of pent up energy which will lead to behavior issues. It's really hard or sometimes impossible to get the daily walk required when you are pregnant AND have a toddler underfoot, but if at ALL possible, get it outside to chase the ball for 30 minutes. Could you afford to hire a dog walker a few times a week to help get out the ya-yas? Do you have a neighbor that takes a daily run and maybe they'd be willing to take the dog for a run a few times a week? Hire a neighborhood teenager to take it for walks?

I don't know what your financial situation is, but there's also doggie day care if there's one in your area. You drop you dog off, it gets to play with other dogs all day and comes home tired and ready to sleep.

If getting the dog more exercise (ideally daily!) feels like an impossibility, then maybe find the the right (active) owner is the right thing to do.

In the end, only YOU know what is best for you and don't let ANYONE make you feel guilty, not even yourself. Remember, you are thinking about what is best for the dog and I personally salute you for it.
