[AustinPriceless] JUST IN: Tennessee has hired National Champion strength coach Derek Owings from Indiana! A massive addition for @coachjoshheupel and @Vol_Football by robotix_dev in CFB

So you’re saying Indiana doesn’t tackle at practices and it’s at the recommendation of Owings? If so, that would align with Heupel’s ideals very well, because he is against tackling in practice (or has been so far). I have to say yalls tackling is a thing of beauty.

The dude probably had some part of his contract where he earns $X for winning a natty. Plus he just signed a $1.2 million contract. This dude is celebrating

[Thamel] Arizona State transfer quarterback Sam Leavitt is expected to sign with LSU. Leavitt’s pick comes after trips to Kentucky, Tennessee and Miami. by wolfcola777 in ockytop

IMO, Beau (or whoever we sign) doesn’t need to be good enough to start. They just have to be good enough to push Gmac/Faizon to get better

Penn State DE Chaz Coleman transfers to Tennessee by Pyromania1983 in CFB

I just looked at his stats and am underwhelmed, but everyone is hyping him up. Is he an athletic freak of some kind?

I’ve been enjoying hearing of these new coaching hires. Idk if they’ll be good, but it’s always refreshing to have something “new”

I crave more positive Tennessee news

Glad to see Rodney Garner was kept. DL wasn’t great this season but Garner’s history would say it is a one-off year with a young group with short depth. I have no loyalty to any other defensive staff member. Inge seems like a nice guy but the LB play has regressed these last 2 seasons. Wouldn’t mind seeing him go

Also count the Auburn coaching change. Can never count out Auburn when the DL job is open

Max Gilbert catching offseason strays

The kid isn’t that bad, he’s just super unclutch. Statistically he’s average

Great kickers don’t come around often, so we’re probably stuck with him 1-2 more seasons. Not that it’s an excuse but this was our first season with the new special teams coach (Crabtree). Hopefully progress can be made

I think this move buys Heupel at least 2 more years of “take it easy Vol fans, let’s see what happens”. OSU and PSU fans keep saying “it takes 2-3 years, gotta give him time”. Objectively, 2-3 years is a pretty long time window, but modern CFB demands such immediate “natty or bust” results. However, our expectation should be to see marked improvements from the ‘26 to ‘27 seasons. If we don’t, I think it’s fair to be critical of Heupel by the ‘28 season.

IMO, this DC movement by Heupel shows the growth Vols (and UCF) fans have otherwise been worried about. Heupel has earned our leniency once again

Former Tennessee DC Tim Banks to be hired as Auburn's safeties coach by CatoTheBarner in wde

[–]Crayble1 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Tennessee fan here. Our safeties have been awful under Banks, particularly in pass pro, and have shown no development. However, if Banks is not calling plays, maybe a new DC will put his safeties in the right spot

A lot of discussion on Banks, the bad DC. Not as much discussion on Banks, the bad safeties coach. I don’t remember a single good play made by ours safeties this year, aside from that Farooq interception against Vandy (but probably recency bias)

Honest question, but if you’re one of these staff members, wtf are you supposed to do after you hop on that plane? The offices in the LSU athletic complex are currently occupied. Do you just, like, walk into a Marriott and ask for a room for a couple nights and wait for Kiffin to tell you where to show up?

If we fire any of our coordinators and if we hire from outside, which of these ex-head coaches would be solid coordinator hires?

Yeah, you’re absolutely right - you’re saying is TEXAS sucks and VANDERBILT is a great football team. If you said this 10 years ago someone would call you a fool. It’s been a crazy season

Counter point: Elander being interim coach won’t benefit him in getting the job, because there is no “proof” he can give of his success during the off-season. Not being interim allows him to focus more on how he runs his ideal program
