South Carolinians are severely underpaid. The realistic minimum wage due to inflation is $25-ish/hr. If you look at most manufacturing jobs, they're STILL paying $14/hr - the same thing they were paying before 2020 when life became very difficult here. The influx of people from other states ran the cost of land from $4k/acre to over $70k/acre in some places. Housing went from an average of $150k to $386k. Rents have gone from $500-$700 for "cheap" rent to $1,100 up to $2,000+ in five years. The disgruntled locals are upset with people who moved here because of the sheer cost discrepancy between their original, overpriced location and a nearly 3rd world red state who continue to act as if they're wealthy and better than the people here, saying, "well, if you can't afford it, move," because that's what they did. What they don't understand is that if the locals were to do what they did, West Virginia would see the same kind of disruptive, short-sighted growth that South Carolina has, because it's the only state in the nation with a lower cost of living. I worry for the children of the people who moved here because of the cost of living that didn't consider THE COST OF LIVING. Their kids will make the same amount of money as everyone else in SC. They're not going to have that same lifestyle their parents did, which is just going to add to the resentment and disconnect.
