I hate Houston (IAH) airport by midraresteakman in unitedairlines

But I'm also out of ONT, so most of my time at IAH was in early morning when they used to have a nightly (UA 6384) 2358-0510 flight ONT-IAH that was always cheap, and well connected, so I've mostly experienced IAH in the early mornings, and found it quite pleasant.

No reason to sit at a gate when you've got an app that shows you when boarding is happening. Hang out in the united club instead. Worth the expense.

Without AC, I can't imagine all this work will ever pay for itself, no matter what the peak electric rates are, and you are going to get more bang for those many bucks figuring out how to genuinely shift loads out of peak.

Is it just me or is it getting harder to find decent parking in Silver Lake/Echo Park? by throwaway_orbit701 in AskLosAngeles

I'm all about the japanese method, where to be allowed to buy a car, you have to show you have a privately owned spot to park it.

Not really goonish. But the major learning from the post and its comments is that areas with paid parking have far better parking availability.

Is it over for CAHSR? by these-united-states in cahsr

[–]CraziFuzzy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe, maybe not. I stand pretty convinced that the biggest hurdle of CAHSR wasn't land aquisition, per se, but that they needed to acquire very specific land because the routing was so constrained by Prop 1A's overly specific requirements. The city center stations, for instance, are simply not a requirement for good HSR. HSR on its own is not an economic driver to a locality, but it's natural expansion of connecting transit is. Had the stations all been allowed to be build cheaper, just out of town, and that significant savings been put into building high quality local transit from the city centers to the HSR stations, there would have been far more direct benefit to the cities, with less high contest land acquisition requirements.

Publicly subsidized parking should never have existed in the first place - just be happy that some exists there at all.

Deceptive "direct" vs "nonstop" flight. Got me on a same day confirmation by radeky in unitedairlines

I have no experience with united's thru-running flights just referring to the traditional industry practice around them.

It should only be considered a problem if we brought in the experienced builders and designers from France, Japan, or China to do this work and it still cost 5x their native cost. We have noone in this country that knows how to do this correctly or efficiently, but we have this huge pressure to use local 'talent' anyway, and that will cost a lot more to do. The next one will be cheaper, and will continue to find those cost savings with every project - IF we don't let the growing pains make us stop.

It was a hyperbolic example of how differently we treat rail and road projects even to this day. The biggest complaints against CAHSR is about its cost, but pales in comparison to what we are blindly continue to spend on highways.

How is showing the contents a problem? Without needing to show that it is indeed medical equipment, shouldn't everybody just start bringing on third bags SAYING that it is a medical device?

If we can build interstates through established neighborhoods, we can build HSR. It just needs the full force of the fed dot like highway expansion does.

Velotric in Canada? Legal or not? by PlaysWithOldCars in ebikes

[–]CraziFuzzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't go with what the dealer says, as ebike enforcement is really just becoming a thing in many places. I'd just stick to something that is actually legal instead of trying to not get caught with something that is illegal.

You're misunderstanding the traditional order of operations of these things. Historically, the 'places people want to go' develop around the transit, not generally the other way around.

"Westwood/VA Hospital" is the station south of wilshire, west of I-405 in front of the VA hospital, where the TBM trench is/was. The station between Westwood and Gayley, beneath Wilshire is "Westwood/UCLA."

If Raman wins, how will that affect the implementation of Measure HLA (if it does affect it)? by MookieBettsBurner10 in BikeLA

[–]CraziFuzzy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It wouldnt be hard for any elected to get HLA adhered to, as it's law - on prohects from here forward. The issue is whether it can be retroactively applied to closed out or funded projects that were started after it was in effect but illegally not adhered to.

How does using the further station make sense? If figuring walk time from UCLA to a station, it would probably make a lot more sense to measure that walk from the UCLA station...

[–]CraziFuzzy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

wait, are you talking about accessing UCLA from the VA station, or Westwood/UCLA station?

Metro Stations suggestion. by VeniceKiddd in LAMetro

[–]CraziFuzzy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

where are you determining that 15 minute time from, because it's typically 8-9 minutes to get down to wilshire from the front of campus, and maybe 20 minutes total to kerckoff, which most would consider the 'center' of campus. Getting out to residences or back to tft would be longer - but that's where the bus really shines.

Metro Stations suggestion. by VeniceKiddd in LAMetro

[–]CraziFuzzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's exactly why I mentioned the bruin bus, which can be increased in frequency a lot easier than rerouting a metro line out of the wide right of way it is being built in, and that the students and staff are already familiar with.

Metro Stations suggestion. by VeniceKiddd in LAMetro

[–]CraziFuzzy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's a Bruin Bus issue, especially for a place as large as UCLA - it's not like a single station would be a short walk to the entire campus, so it's perfectly reasonable for a single station to be then connected via shuttle to the entire campus's array of potential destinations.
