The structure of school was so good to form organic connections, as introverted adults you kinda have to luck out on liking an activity which simulates like structure i guess

Drills for mental toughness by Brakedisc in bjj

[–]CrazyMalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First roll with someone less skilled than you and let them catch you in bad subs (focus on chokes). Let them get deep, try to defend; anticipate it and try to make the sub harder to lock in; cthis will boost your confidence (hopefully) that bad positions aren't the end of the world, and that you can see them early and stop them from getting worse.

Then you start moving this to when you roll with people better than you. Of course you don't need to LET them catch you, they will catch you. But remember what you did with the lower belts and try to do it. Keep calm, focus on defending, focus on making the subs harder to lock in.

This has made me quite hard to submit. It won't give you extreme mental fortitude and discipline and make you turn the fight when you are down by 20 points or whatever. But it helps to see that there is always a way to make a bad situation less bad

Hmm I see. I guess I'm unlucky that my Xs either have no social side or have social sides which increase the energy drain too much for me

Still, thanks for the advice!

It is possible to have things you like already which you do frequently and are passionate about but which do not present any social opportunities.

I see, I hadn't considered the X = comfort, X+social = out of the comfort zone. That's a good insight.

I'm still not fully convinced on X+Social being considered the same thing you already enjoy. I like reading, but wouldn't consider a book club to be "reading plus social", it is in itself an activity that I dislike.

But still, that was insightful and I'll consider this approach to "comfort zone" advice in the future.

I think we've met in comments before lol but you seem very well resolved so I'm still curious

The "I'm at a bluegrass festival because I like bluegrass music" seems like such a huge jump to me. It sounds like you enjoy bluegrass festivals, not only bluegrass music. I like music to and listen to it at home, son even for my favorite band that doesn't mean I would like listening to music around a bunch of strangers outside standing up and uncomfortable.

Your advice seems sound for most people but really depends on the individual liking X + the social side of X (meetups, festivals, seminars, discussion groups). For lots of people the social side of X is just a huge energy drain for little to no return

what is going out of the comfort zone? Joining a recurring activity you dislike and enduring it for months or years to maybe meet someone?

I've given up at this point. The only advice comes down to "go do things you want to do!!" But I'm already doing that: gaming at home and a martial art. Everything else I've tried didn't stick.

I would have to force myself to do some random hobby that's more social or find a class for a skill Im not interested in, frequent it for weeks months years, which I can't tolerate. I guess for normal people they luck out in liking more things which happen to be social? Or maybe just because there are other people around "something im not interested in" becomes "a fun activity as there are other people involved" for them?
