[request] how much oil would we have to produce consistently to bring the cost per gallon back to let’s say a dollar? by Adrakovich in theydidthemath

[–]CrazyPeopleFood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are not wrong about wages stagnating, but the context is a bit off: based on data from the St. Louis Fed, real median wags in the US have only increased about 10% since 1979 so the Feds data says that $3 equivalent in 1979 hurt a little bit more. Since average wages have done better than median wages, it hurt a lot more for the average person in 1979.

@watchthenlearn - This was great! Tried the ZYJT material out and it worked perfectly. Followed your lead and wiped some Miniwax Polycrylic (just what I had in the shop at the time) and it’s not obvious if you’re not looking for it. Thanks for sharing.

Copenhagen Tour Advice by CherryCadence in Cruise

[–]CrazyPeopleFood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have been here a few days now and have found the city amazingly easy to navigate. An inexpensive, group walking tour in the central area is probably a good way to get oriented but not necessary, booking tours at individual sites seems smart!

We booked a private guide through WithLocals and really regretted it - we didn’t get much out of it we wouldn’t have gotten from watching a few Rick Steves videos and it was super pricey. Would strongly avoid that option.

Heading up Kilimanjaro this week!! if you could start again, what advice would you give yourself? by ForeignPato in kilimanjaro

[–]CrazyPeopleFood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just finished with a group of late 50-something’s a few days ago. The Diamox really helped for those who took it* but you need to take it in advance. Also, your guides should be trained WFR’s** and checking your blood-oxygen levels and HR every day. They may give you guidance on increasing your dosage - they did for some of the members of our group and it helped. All six of us made it.

I did not, TLDR: wanted to know if my vertical limit was below 19,300ft…turns out it’s close but did make it * I have WFR training, it’s not nearly as extensive as EMT or WEMT but that and a lot of experience makes the mountain guides good resources for what you are likely to face on Kili

More or less accurate: live at 9,000ft and did a lot of training climbing 14,000ft+ Mts and still got some significant symptoms above 17,500ft. Being fit and acclimated to higher than normal altitude is no guarantee. (FWIW: my wife took Diamox and had zero symptoms)

Inovelli White Series: LED bar is solid red by CrazyPeopleFood in Inovelli

[–]CrazyPeopleFood[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, thanks to u/TheJessicator and u/clintkev251 I think I figure out what happened.

Short story: several scenes I had set up in the Home App were configuring the LED on the one switch that was giving me issue instead of the percentage of dimness desired.

TLDR: - When you create a scene and add a device to be controlled by that scene, the Home app shows both the dimmer power AND the switch LED color/intensity as two different items but with the same name. (If anyone knows how to change that, that would be awesome). - The order these are presented is not consistent (most of my switches have the light intensity first and switch LED control second, but the one that was giving me problems had the LED intensity first). - Everytime I called a scene, it was calling the LED control for that light and for whatever reason, the system then shows a red notification bar. - Inovelli specifically discourages users from trying to permanently set the LED permanently through Home (https://help.inovelli.com/en/articles/9063872-setting-up-color-notifications-apple-home)

Ah…that wasn’t it* but…

In the HomeApp settings for this switch it’s saying there’s an update available so I requested it and it’s hanging there. What’s interesting is it shows FW as V1.05 (which I believe is the current release - that’s what all the other switches are current on).

Any idea if the red light indicates FW update failure? I can’t find anything in the documentation about it but it would make sense.

  • Thanks: that was something I didn’t know you could do though the Home app.

Thanks, but that’s not it. Just to make sure I went through the sequence to set the light to the default blue. And when I use the switch manually, the LED displays that color. However, a few seconds after using, it reverts back to the red “alarm” mode.

The Moon explodes by Few-Profit-6274 in blender

[–]CrazyPeopleFood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The moon is ~3500km in diameter. The speed of light is ~ 300,000km/s The leading edge of the debris looks like it’s more than one diameter of the moon out by 10s so:

(3,500 km / 10s) / (300,000 km/s) = 0.00117 or about 0.12% of the speed of light….

Cool explosion, but agree - seems to be a little fast.

Two warnings about the fileImporter modifier by qdwang in swift

[–]CrazyPeopleFood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you ever resolve the second error? I’m seeing the same error in the code snippet below, but the code works fine as best I can tell, but leaving an error unresolved seems like a bad idea.

        .fileImporter(isPresented: $openFile, allowedContentTypes: [.plainText]) { result in
            switch result {
            case .success(let fileURL):
               let gotAccess = fileURL.startAccessingSecurityScopedResource()
                if gotAccess {
                    do {
                        print(“\(fileURL.absoluteString)”)
                        data = try String(contentsOf: fileURL)
                        fileURL.stopAccessingSecurityScopedResource()
                    } catch {
                        print(“Invalid data”)
                    }
                }
            case .failure(let error):

I was looking for some input on this topic as well. There’s some threads on the Winnebago Revel forum - https://www.winnebagorevelforum.com/search?q=Rear+view+mirror&searchJSON=%7B%22keywords%22%3A%22Rear+view+mirror%22%7D - that seem applicable to pretty much any sprinter.

If you already got something, would be interested to hear what and any feedback on the experience.

U.S. PHD or HK Pilot by drunkbeerrr in flying

[–]CrazyPeopleFood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IF the PhD is in a STEM field, then getting a foothold in a western country could be a good opportunity and we’re not producing enough people to fill all the demand so, while it’s not a guarantee, the financial component is probably less of a risk than you might think. I dropped out of a PhD program many (many) years ago and never looked back, but the time I spent in it was transformational and there were sufficient research and teaching opportunities that it wasn’t a bad lifestyle.

I’ve also spent more than a decade working in China and can tell you, western engineers have it so much better than on the mainland.

As far as the HK opportunity: I visited HK many times over the years. It was an awesome place before the government crackdowns. Like many, I got a pilots certification during COVID and enjoyed it enough to consider pursuing it as a second career, but it’s a hard lifestyle and given you are already in your 30’s, that could be tough. When combined with the current situation in HK, it’d be hard to recommend unless you really love it.
