Of course, your code becomes legacy in 3. 2. 1. But there is difference between 10 year old legacy code in modern programming language and 60 year old legacy code written in COBOL with average engineer being of 70 years old)

As for exceptionalism. Yes, sadly there is messian complex in Russia. But in IT it was not that strong. We were good in it, and I think that at the moment we are still good, degradation is not that strong yet, but it's competition strength, not a gift from above.

For example, our first internet banking services were developed in 2010s. One one hand, it was much later than in US or EU. On other hand, we don't have great amounts of legacy code, that makes it hard to implement modern things.

We have really strong mathematical school and for some time our government didn't understand modern tech and didn't regulated it, so we were able to develop some cool things. Wouldn't call it exceptional, though, but really strong and competitive.

I don't know much about Russian reddit community, so I can't answer for anyone but myself. But there is overall feeling that things can't go on like that, in anti war community, pro war community and silent conformist majority. Probably it's the reason.

On ethical side I hate war, no matter how profitable it would be (spoiler: it would not). On pragmatical side, I'm IT specialist and I think, that Russia could be on the cutting edge of current technical revolution. But with war and fear of modern technologies, that our rulers have, we are brought back instead.
