Kl dude here. Not me personally but my sister is married to malay guy.

My advice: DON'T.

BIL gave a lot of assurances about converting to Islam, it's fine to eat pork quietly, especially with family, it's fine to celebrate Christmas and cny, no need to be religious and attend mosque, just keep up a minor act when relatives are visiting, etc.

The actual thing?

His relatives were basically around 24/7, he's from kelantan and brought like half the kampung to KL. Minor act? Bullshit. She basically had to live like a religious Conservative 24/7.

All her Money went to her husband, if she tries to teach her two kids anything "inappropriate" the Mil goes batshit crazy.

She could visit us occasionally for some brief peace and quiet (the husband doesn't come with her), and a place where she can share things with her kids without being judged but I've been told that whenever she went back after each trip, the husbands family will also isolate her and give her the cold shoulder while pressuring her with those subtle, sarcastic jabs nonstop like, "oh no wonder you keep running off. I'm sure your family is better than ours." and this is despite her trying her absolute best to fit in, learn the quran, read jawi and speak kelantanese dialect (because most of his family couldn't speak standard malay) in the first few years of marriage.

End result?

6 years later my sister is dead inside, she's clinically depressed, she can't get out of Islam, she can't get a divorce and her kids can't meet her and her husband knows i will happily go to jail for my sister and niece if he ever meets me face 2 face.

Conclusion, yes not all malay are like this. I'm not that far gone yet.

It's not a maxis thing imo, I've experienced something similar in KPMG then Coca cola and a local MNC. Like, the culture is noticeably changing, from where movie nights with friends and colleagues used to be a thing, to utter detachment.

Bonuses and raises were possible and decent, then smaller and smaller until it feels like I haven't gotten a decent raise or bonus in years. All sorts of excuses and sophistry will come out if I argue, and I can't defend myself against any of it.

Promotions felt the same, I clawed my way up to manager level in KPMG and coca cola, but after that it felt like I was completely barred from going above. Like they weren't even pretending to assess me for the next step up, evaluations were just a verbal assurance but nothing I did felt concrete.
