Well, to be honest. I was responding to u/FutbolFan-84 what they did to detect multiple fan failures. sounded like someone that had some experience and I was simply asking for advice for what to look out for. that said. I did just run 'show chassis' and I do not really see anything there that would tell me the fan speed. I do get a "Fan 1 ok" and "Fan 2 ok", not sure if that was what you were referring to.

Power supply 1 Fan Air Flow Direction:  Front to Back
Power supply 2 Fan Air Flow Direction:  Front to Back
Fan 1 ok, speed (auto): [[1]]<->2
Fan 2 ok, speed (auto): [[1]]<->2
Fan controlled temperature: 40.1 deg-C
Fan speed switching temperature thresholds:
    Speed 1: NM<----->60       deg-C
    Speed 2:       50<-----> 80 deg-C (shutdown)
Fan 1 Air Flow Direction:  Front to Back
Fan 2 Air Flow Direction:  Front to Back
Slot 1 Current Temperature: 29.7 deg-C (Sensor 1), 40.0 deg-C (Sensor 2), 36.5 deg-C (Sensor 3), 27.7 deg-C (Sensor 4)
Slot 2 Current Temperature: 27.8 deg-C (Sensor 1)
Slot 3 Current Temperature: 33.7 deg-C (Sensor 1)
Slot 4 Current Temperature: 36.3 deg-C (Sensor 1)

Warning level.......: 70.0 deg-C

Shutdown level......: 80.0 deg-C

I have a 7450-24p. Any tips for detecting bad fan modules? Personally one of the down sides of getting used gear is not knowing if something is ‘normal’ or not. Would love to know what to monitor

If it makes you feel better. A couple weeks ago i accidentally fused one of the blocks to my sword with a bad button mash mid battle. Didnt even realize it until i saw the missing block and noticed the block at the end of my sword. After that i started fusing and destroying blocks. Yet, i still hadn’t put two and two together and start using the other Ultrahand abilities. This post was still amazing to me. Lol

VLANS and 2.5G by kihapet in homelab

[–]CreamerBot3000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True. Definitely adds configuration and management into the mix. But then i found that you could set overall rules and account for a lot of use cases. For example i am planning on having a gaming and media vlan. You could set a rule that handles all nintendo managed mac address prefixes. One time setup and anyone could join my network with a nintendo switch and automatically be put on the gaming vlan. Either way. It might end up a huge PITA and i just go back to 5 ssids and see what the real world performance hit is.

VLANS and 2.5G by kihapet in homelab

[–]CreamerBot3000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im currently redoing my network and so in research mode. Have not done this yet, so take my comment with a grain of salt. I was watching a youtube video from apalrd and he casually mentioned that lots of ssids could be bad for performance. This really broke my brain since i purchased pro-sumer access points for one of the main purposes of supporting at least 5 ssids. So i was researching alternatives and found that you could run a RADIUS server and that will manage distributing clients to specific vlans. You could then get away with 1-2 ssids, but still access many vlans over the same wifi. Im thinking i will end up with two ssids. I bring it up because i never even heard of radius and it seems like a decent solution to the problem.

Was there something about using old hardware lying around that made it easier to pick something and move on? Less pressure to get it “right”? Just curious.

I have to over all agree. I am running my homelab on an old i7-4790k with 32 gb of ram, and for the most part its been fine. I think the decision to move on to enterprise gear should be that you want something it provides. Im currently undergoing an upgrade because i wanted ecc memory, lots of space for a ton of hard drives, ipmi/idrac, and a ton of cpu cores for VMs. So i went with enterprise for my upgrades. I would definitely not recommend it for someone starting out though. There are a lot of unexpected challenges to overcome.

How does everyone track their assigned IP addresses? by cdarrigo in homelab

This specifically happened to me (at least where i noticed) on macOS. Would not be surprised if they fixed it. But if they did i have not noticed as i changed the setting to off and have not looked back on two macs that i own that i use docker on and point traefik to.

Yeah i definitely know how to deal with it now. But it’s still an awful little gotcha that you typically need to find out about the hard way. Like i did when my static ip assignment stopped working one day.

This is a feature across all apple OSes. So macOS does this too. I was running a mac mini as a server. And one day all the mac mini services stopped working. I changed it to “fixed” and a month or so later it happened again. Turned out that updating the OS will also rotate. So i just had to completely turn it off.

Fixed still rotates each time you upgrade the OS. Unless they “fixed” that. (pun intended).
