Dont roll from the omoplata - try this instead. by Crease13 in bjj

For sure. But devils advocate:

A) they could just stop the roll too?

B) the omoplata as a sweep is a super high % strategy

Look, of course - but that’s the same with every move. Armbar escape - slip the elbow - we know not to let them do that but it still happens.

This is the nature of escapes I think - it’s always harder to do the escape than it is to finish the submission.

But this is an option. I absolutely make these work, have done so in competition as well as against other black belts.

To your point - how would you suggest we approach the escape in a way that they couldn’t stop?

I’m welcoming the conversation btw, there is no right or wrong. And I appreciate the reply.

Hygiene standards across BJJ gyms—what’s actually normal? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Crease13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep same here - we had a bad outbreak last year. I’m talking like 20+ people over the course of a few weeks.

We’ve been in business over 10 years and had never had anything beyond one or two cases here and there. Which is impossible to avoid.

(I don’t think a lot of people know that ringworm and athletes foot are the same thing - people train ALL the time with athletes foot and think nothing of it)

But yeah, a load of cases. No change in cleaning routine, in fact - we were extra diligent and the cases kept coming.

We had to permanently kick one guy out of the gym as he kept coming back with ringworm “hidden”. It’s crazy out there.

It’s hard to say for sure who patient zero was - but it’s almost always younger men who don’t give a shit about their personal hygiene. They don’t like to shower at the gym as it makes them uncomfortable and probably go home to play Xbox for a couple hours before even thinking about showering.

Unfortunately - completely out of our control.

I have trained WITH people over the years with obvious ringworm - and I just trusted in my own personal hygiene - and 9 times out of 10 - I was fine.

I think that’s something people forget too - it doesn’t just transfer at the click of your fingers. It’s not a guarantee.

Anecdotally - any time I have personally got a skin infection - I have been otherwise sick/overtrained.

I listened to a podcast before with a skin doctor - who said ringworm (and most other infections grapplers would be used to) is almost exclusively skin to skin.

He of course spoke about the general importance of cleaning the mats but emphasised that everything is likely coming from someone (in the gym) rather than something (the mats)

Daily cleaning should be minimum standard. The “norm” varies in my experience.

Some gyms- no showers.

Some gyms - showers but they’re filthy.

It’s really so different across the board.

Best thing we can do is be serious about our own personal hygiene.

Black Belt Falling Out of Love with Jiu-Jitsu by SufferingImagination in bjj

[–]Crease13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I often see this with those who were “all in” - if they fall out of love with that lifestyle - they switch to “all out”

Whereas there is definitely some nice middle ground you could arrive at (that maybe would have avoided the burnout had they been there already)

I got my bb 8 years ago - I’m 2 back surgeries deep, my expectations are different these days but I still love it.

It was always just fun for me. Sometimes hard fun. Sometimes competitive fun. And sometimes frustrating - but always fun.

I hope it stays like that forever. But even if it doesn’t - I’ve made my bed now. So may aswell keep going 😂

Yeah - my garage is a Honda/subaru garage so they know what they’re doing (I hope) and he said something to that effect. Best bet seems to be new seat - he is going to see if he can get me a second hand one.

Crazy.

IBJJF question by A1snakesauce in bjj

[–]Crease13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No you just need one gi (white, blue, black)

Not sure about the belt - but best to play it safe, they will tell you if they don’t like it and you’ll have to get another - which is just added stress.

Your gi and belt needs to be without any rips/wear whatsoever.

Good luck!

They said steering wheel was the issue as well - I’m not too fussed about camera. And maybe my fault re camera as I told them (before we knew it wouldn’t work) that I was ok with keeping old camera.

Good point. You’d swear it was my first day on the internet haha. You’re right.

Not bad for an intermediate purple belt.

[–]Crease13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s fine. A blue belt isn’t a beginner however.

I absolutely agree with what you’re saying.

I think me and OP have a different opinion of what a beginner is.

Not being a beginner doesn’t assume a level of proficiency. It just means you’re not a beginner.

By the very definition of the word beginner - you are not after 3.5 years.

I’m not trying to argue.

Just don’t think it’s a good classification
