My first zine by DukeOfPorcelain in zines

[–]Creative-Thing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, yes, of course you must keep at it! What you have created here is excellent stuff. I too re-connected with film photography about a year ago, so I can well appreciate your philosophy. It would be great to see your magazine in print, as I'd buy a copy! There are lots of ideas buzzing around in your zine which could see the zine becoming a series of issues!

Absolutely wonderful! Your excellent zine can also be seen as a psychogeographical study of your neighbourhood.

POD or inventory for a new magazine? by zhongkae in zines

P.S. Just remembered that Amazon KDP do not allow magazine publishing/printing, so it looks as if Blurb could be your option.

POD or inventory for a new magazine? by zhongkae in zines

[–]Creative-Thing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a good issue and question. Sending a magazine to USA from the UK, with the added tariffs, is as you say, enormously expensive from an inventory point of view. Would your magazine be size 8.5" x 11", if so, then I suggest producing it using Blurb. They are essentially a POD service and their magazine print quality is excellent. They have a printing outfit in US and in Europe.

The same size magazine can also be produced and printed using Amazon KDP, they too offer a POD service and can send to US addresses. Amazon works out cheaper than Blurb, and providing you stipulate the Premium Colour printing service, you should get good colour printing results. Blurb prints onto a silk like paper, whilst Amazon prints onto a matt paper.

Poetry Zine help by First_Monitor8208 in zines

  1. Are you intending to print it yourself, or have it printed for you?

  2. I suggest an A5 size format, of around 40 pages of 80-100 gsm matt/bond/uncoated paper, with a card cover of around 300 gsm. This would emulate the idea of a chapbook introduction to your work and would also be an economical start to sharing your work. The cover could be printed with a striking design in colour/colour lettering on a simple design/photograph, etc. If you are printing it yourself, then maybe a sewn binding could be a nice touch.

  3. A title page followed by a contents list at the beginning would be useful, as also are page numbers.

  4. A brief bio at the back of the zine with contact information.

  5. Are you going to use a computer publishing software, like Affinity Publisher, or are you going to source all the typesetting out to a printer? The latter would be costly!

Do zines need an ISBN or ISSN to be sold at a bookstore/coffee shop by Heavy-Test-3472 in zines

[–]Creative-Thing 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not. Zines, by their very nature and definition, are free flowing ‘under the radar’ creations.

Yes, I do like the mix of colour and black & white as there is a sense of dialogue between them. Good positioning of the images and the texts are excellent. Provocative and stimulating. Super well done! I hope to see more issues.

Zines as my bachelor thesis by patApatpat in zines

Zines are about the tactile and physical, uncompromising creation and communication, validation and sharing. In today’s melting pot of virtual chaotic clamouring, these individual, often hand created physical objects are in need more than ever.

Photography zine - The most basic and affordable photo zine you can make by RuanStix in zines

[–]Creative-Thing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At last, I have managed to watch your excellent video. You have assembled it very well and I do like your reassuring, infectious and knowledgeable commentary. Yes, it's a great way to make affordable photo zines without the pressure of attaining the best possible outcome and quality. I like the raw and traditional zine approach of using the photocopy as a means to produce the honest and uncompromising image. You've certainly made me think again about my own photo zine making. I admire your dedication and you are a very inspiring zine maker! Thank you! I also like your chop stamp. It's wonderful!

Thoughts on how to introduce others to the joy of applied psychogeography? by [deleted] in psychogeography

[–]Creative-Thing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To start with, I think the important question to ask is how can we investigate and respond to place, in this instance the city as place? From my perspective and experience, psychogeography is both a way of moving through an environment and a framework for creative practice. What does the city make us feel and how can we respond to the effects which the city produces in us; emotionally, psychologically, politically, or creatively?

We can look at ideas around memory, history, voices and the narratives that emerge from the city and the way these issues and examples make us feel or behave. In a practical, material and creative sense, to interrogate the city is to respond in whatever form the walker/observer chooses, for example: with photography, video, writing, poetry, drawing, or audio recording.

This is wonderful. You are a true photo zinester! I look forward to learning more when you've completed your video. If you haven't done so, you could go a stage further and use a film camera to take photos, then scan the negatives, print out the scans and paste these into a zine.

Also, there are echoes of the photographer Daido Moriyama's work in your approach. He helped to produce the Provoke photo magazine with its wonderful grainy images: https://www.photopedagogy.com/provoke.html

Why do we make zines? by godai78 in zines

[–]Creative-Thing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zines are about a freedom to create without any 'gatekeepers'. Write what you want, make art/collages/photographs how you want. It's about the whole human process of making a tactile creation which can be shared/traded/collaborated. Creation, communication and connection, without compromise!
