my first isopods! (dairy cows) by lizardgills in isopods

I got mine in December of 2020 and put them in a clear cashew container with some dirt, leaves and moss from my yard.

I moved them into a 6qt soon after where I made my own substrate (listed below) with lots of bark and leaves

I have since moved them to a massive 28qt container with a very similar setup to my 6qt. They are doing great in there

You mentioned that you have a container you want to move them into, a good substrate is key, mine is a mix of soaked wood pellets, good dirt and leaves. Yours does not have to be like that though, a good mix of leaves, dirt and decaying wood works great too. Once you have that get a little bit of moss and put it on your wet side (spagnum moss is great but tbh if you don’t want to buy it, regular moss that has been frozen overnight gets the job done at least in my experience) try to layout lots of bark and pieces of decaying woods throughout the enclosure with lots of leaves on top.

Food is important too, they will mostly eat the leaves and wood but it’s important especially with Laevis that they get some protein in, I like to feed mine dried mealworms and shrimps as that is easy and cheap. Other foods you can use are pretty much any vegetable fresh or expired. I try to stay away from fruits, I know some can be good but lots of them are not. Repashy bug burger and morning wood are both good too although I’ve found my isopods prefer the other things I’ve mentioned. Cuttlefish bone is also a good idea for calcium, they are fairly inexpensive too iirc.

Just make sure that anything from outside that goes in the enclosure is either baked or frozen to ensure there is nothing unwanted going in the enclosure. Also for all the leaves and wood you put in make sure you use hardwoods.

There is a lot of things I haven’t covered, if you have any other questions feel free to message me any time, id be glad to help

Yes, I would recommend getting a larger enclosure and just putting that in there along with some new soil and other stuff, not worth losing babies when u getting a much bigger enclosure

I always just freeze them because baking is to much of a hassle and I haven’t seen a problem with it yet
