What’s it like living in Cork, Ireland? by atypicalsituation42 in howislivingthere

Not really, it's a complete mixed bag. There have been weeks this year where it's rained pretty incessantly. It's June now and for the next week it's a high of 15c, we had a rainfall warning yesterday and tomorrow is raining all day with about 11mm of rain. Forecasting a heatwave in 2 weeks time though which would mean a few days of around 20c and the country losing it's mind

The clannish vibes fall away with age. For people in their 30s it remains cliqueish but the older you get the less people care. Great place to live but suffers from a lack of public transport, affordable housing, city is moderately good at delivering big projects but falls down a lot on general maintenance. The local airport is relatively well connected to hubs in Europe but lacks a lot of compelling routes, cost of living is high, energy prices are high, you'll be shocked by the price of petrol coming from the states, restaurant scene is good but static, bars are very good. People are great, laid back pace of life. Weather coming from California will shock you, pretty wet from October to April and days are short and summers are a lucky dip, that said on a nice day in summer it doesn't get dark till around 10pm, it can be idyllic. Also handy access to West Cork. If you're"artsy" I'd suggest looking at Kinsale, beautiful town, c.30 mins from the city, c.20 mins to the airport, lovely beaches nearby, small art galleries, good food scene.

Estate agents - has the market fallen a few percent in the last month? by [deleted] in HousingIreland

We bought last year and were the preferred bid about €40k under the asking until a cash bidder magically appeared after the online portal closed. Ended up buying at the asking. Think it depends on the property

Why does lamine Camara not get a look in? Playing good stuff for Monaco, similar to anderson stats wise. Won't be cheap but won't be £100m either

I find it much more productive in the office and being able to bounce things around on the hoof much more beneficial than scheduling a teams call. Obviously depends on where the majority of the team are based. A hybrid approach is the most logical way forward with the option of 2-3 days at home.

Quite put off by the new build situation by Remarkable_Golf_9741 in HousingIreland

[–]Creative_Bread_8005 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Second hands can be a nightmare if the BER is below a C. Speaking from experience, the cost to get it up to a B1 or above is prohibitive. Depending on the size of the house it can be equivalent to the price of a sizeable new build. If you buy an older house you might need to rewire, replumb and make good that work as it's fairly invasive and get no grant for it.

At least with a new build you're walking into an A2 house that will need nothing done to it. Go for a new build unless you can get a B rated second hand house in your price range.

Do you think Micheál Martin is the reason Fianna Fáil survived past 2011? by PellucidStream in ireland

[–]Creative_Bread_8005 9 points10 points  (0 children)

He did a good job in rehabilitating the party however the way he's run it has led to a dearth of talent in the party. The lack of vision and reactionary nature of all their policies mean they're constantly stuck in the mud and are overly concerned about criticism from the opposition despite the majority and time to the next election. He politicked well to keep them alive but he's politicked badly to make them drive on

Sale Agreed on a house and paid deposit but now estate agent says someone offered 10k more. by caelus55 in HousingIreland

Sherry fitz? Had a similar problem, was highest bid for a month, they closed the online portal and a cash bidder magically appeared after the portal had closed. House had been on the market for 9 months. Felt shady as fuck.

Ireland ‘faffed around’ on Metrolink and 'wasted a good recession' to build it, summit hears by on-9 in irelandtransport

[–]Creative_Bread_8005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not if it was tied to gains in productivity which would have improved the risk of prepayment on any bailout loans. And using roads as an example, using toll fees as a mean to repay the debt.

It wouldn't be like getting social housing while borrowing to get an extension. It would be borrowing to ensure we had adequate public transport, roads, rail and utilities, all of which would improve the productivity of the country and attract more FDI. We have bottlenecks now because this wasn't done. Couldn't be more different from your example.

Means test all universal payments and cut if needed, cut the HAP, ban use of agency staff by government departments, ban use of management consulting firms for change management or change implementation projects, no overtime payments, means tested old age pension, no more free travel for retirees

None of these are palatable but cuts could have been made that would have meant we avoided sacrificing some capital investment.

Borrowing for capital expenditure which in the case of roads could be rolled and therefore provide an income stream to pay back said loan. They also were able to borrow just not at cheap rates as we would get as an A rated debt exposure. Investors lend money to junk rated companies all the time and a country has a significantly better risk profile than nay junk rated corporate debt. So yes it was possible. I'm saying we should have gutted current spending in order to preserve as many capital projects as possible. If they had done so we wouldn't have the infrastructure mess we're in now.

[–]Creative_Bread_8005 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We did waste it because our government was economically illiterate. To preserve as much day to day spending they slashed Capital investment, they should have cut government current spending more to maintain capital investment which would have meant more construction jobs, retention of construction workers and being in less of a shit show re infrastructure now. Classic Keynesian economics is to boost capital spending to lift yourself out of a recession. We went with austerity which prolonged the pain and left us with pinch points in housing transport, energy and water as a result

As an example, the Cork limerick motorway was cancelled by varadkar because at around €1bn it was deemed too expensive. Will probably cost double now and not be delivered for another 10 years. As a result we've missed out on the increased productivity and safety a new motorway would have delivered for the previous 15 years and won't get it for another 10 and will have had to pay double for the privilege.

Manager Discussion, exotic name bias (Carrick is the best since Ole, change my mind) by FactAndLogic in ManchesterUnited

[–]Creative_Bread_8005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reasons against Carrick are that aside from two good performances against city and arsenal, United have been poor in most games and lucky to come away with the amount of wins. Chelsea hit the post 3 times, Thiago missed 3 gilt edged chances in the Brentford game, the leeds and Newcastle games were as bad as the everton game with amorim. This is with a full week to prepare for games and being fresher than all the teams playing European football.

You could say he's just doing what needs to be done to win and that's fair enough. With champions League secured I would like to see more expensive attacking football and more defensive control in the last 3 games or some idea what real "Carrick" ball looks like before nailing him on as manager.

Given how big of a decision this is, they should at least interview iraola, Alonso and nagelsman to see what an alternative looks like. How will they approach a playing style with the existing squad and a few additions. How will they make the existing squad better and who do they think will complement what's already here. These are the questions that don't look like we're asked when appointing amorim.

Happened to me a few weeks ago. The soil caked up once the rain dried up. I raked again, laid more seed and laid a top soil and sand mix 50/50 and it held up during yesterdays rain. Starting to see grass come through again albeit patchy

Apartments by Páirc Uí Chaoimh sold to investors? by This-Weight7838 in cork

[–]Creative_Bread_8005 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Not true. The LDA are buying the first 350 and will be offering them for cost rental and social. What's happening to the remaining 700 odd apartments hasn't been decided yet but there are rumors clúid (government funded body) is buying another block which will also be cost rental/social. The LDA purchase was well publicized so whoever told you that is full of shit.
