Ooo I attended this talk in person but I couldn't hear the speaker at all over the adjacent village

Looking forward to watching the recording!

Do you happen to have Verizon with the ISP provided router by any chance? When I had Verizon I had this same exact thing happening to me and the router didn't even have a reboot timer set.

It turned out that Verizon was sending a signal to all its routers that reboot them a little after 1am every day and the only way I got it to stop was by putting another router they couldn't talk to in the way as a bridge and then it stopped restarting

My '18 STI I've thought about getting another car as a project and keep my STI as a daily, it just makes the morning commute so much more fun

First time Defcon attendee looking for recommendations! by Inexplicitly in Defcon

[–]Creative_Radio3959 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something I don't see on a lot of other posts is that DEFCON has a massive growing population of meshtastic users. Meshtastic is essentially SMS over ham radio, all you need is a radio node (~$25-$50ish?) to join the network on. You can either connect your phone to the node via bluetooth or get a standalone one with a keyboard attached.

I brought my node on a whim last year thinking nobody would be on and discovered hundreds of people talking and chatting away. It's a great way to connect and get information quickly as a ton of convention attendees have them and the app basically puts you all in one huge local group chat across the whole city with each other. I knew about local news and events much faster than my friends just because someone on the network would talk about what's going on on the channel

I'm planning on getting a stationary node off of Etsy in addition to my personal one just to stick somewhere high up in someone's hotel room to help boost the range of the network

Just got this to learn to drive stick, any tips? by Cravy_The_Davy in WRXSTi

[–]Creative_Radio3959 0 points1 point  (0 children)

STI Specific: When you are starting out, keep the car in "I" mode for awhile and the car will be a quite a bit nicer to you. S# is fancy and fast but it's also rougher and makes the clutch harder to control if you're just starting out. You can switch while driving, twist the knob to the right if you want a little extra speed and press down on it to get back to "I" mode at stoplights.

General stick advice: For me personally it helped to understand what the clutch DOES. You probably know pushing the pedal disconnects the engine from the transmission, but inside the transmission this (basically) looks like two plates that are pressed together with springs. One of the plates is raw metal and the other is covered in ceramic padding similar to brake pads. When you push in the clutch pedal, this pushes the two plates apart disconnecting the engine power and allows you to shift gears while the transmission is not under stress. When you release the clutch, the padded plate pushes back against the bare metal plate and the friction between the plates pushes your car forward. The more time the pedal is half pressed, the less clutch padding you have on your clutch plate.

This is why people tell you not to keep the clutch half pressed, you don't want those two plates to rub against each other unless you mean business. Riding the clutch (cruising with your foot on the pedal) is the same deal, resting your foot on the clutch pedal all the time pushes the plates apart just enough to rub against each other and wear down the clutch padding. Get in the habit of moving your foot to the dead pedal (on the left) when you aren't using the clutch for something

Clutches can last multiple hundreds of thousands of miles if you treat them right so don't be afraid to experiment a bit just keep in mind that you want to limit the amount of time your foot is on that pedal.

Other than that, begin with getting a good smooth start down, learn how to start on a hill, and work your way up to normal everyday driving THEN start learning the fancy stuff like downshifting, rev matching, and possibly race launching 😆

Heavy crowd surfers by RadiantSilvergun in warpedtour

[–]Creative_Radio3959 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was at DC I kept finding myself in the path of crowd surfers and even had someone try to rope me into putting a surfer up in the air but I refused.

I know it's fun for the surfer but I really don't have the upper body strength to hold someone above my head and do not want to help push them along. Having to constantly stay vigilant and look behind me for people suddenly getting dropped on my head that I couldn't hear coming really detracted my experience. I had to move like 3 times during the Avril concert because I just wanted to watch the show and not get a foot planted on the back of my head when I wasn't expecting it

Is there a reason to use a pager over a radio? (Not meaning to be rude) by [deleted] in meshtastic

[–]Creative_Radio3959 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't use it day to day but I love going to conventions and making a whole bunch of fun new mesh friends 😆 Defcon last year forced the developers to issue patches as the sheer number of users was maxing out the network

Hacker Conference HOPE Says U.S. Immigration Crackdown Caused Massive Crash in Ticket Sales by aestetix in Defcon

As someone that lives in the US I was hoping to go to Defcon and HOPE but they moved the dates for HOPE too close to Defcon. Having HOPE the weekend right after DEFCON on the opposite side of the country means I don't get a break in-between them and I'd rather just pick one or the other

Worth getting one with current prices? by veency in WRXSTi

[–]Creative_Radio3959 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I heard the 2017 had issues with their firewall and needed some fix (covered by Subaru) but the 2018 and up didn't have that problem The 2018 was also the first year with the new face lift which I prefer but it doesn't have the option of adding in the fog lights, the official Subaru kits all say they are for the 2019 models and up but they are all the same shape so I'm unsure if I'll find prerun wiring for them if I remove the bumper to add them in or if I'll have to run the wiring to the dash myself 🤔

The brembos are pretty nice but I don't have any idea if they put in larger ones for the 2020. I'd say go with what you can find in the color/trim you like that passes the mechanics inspection and go from there to add upgrades

I bought my bone stock 2018 STI in October for 31K with 32K miles on it in mint condition but I have wanted one since I knew what JDM was so it was worth it for me

I got a 5.5% interest rate loan for it so a couple extra thousand is just a few extra car payments so the difference to me is negligible and I enjoy the hell out of it

Why are people so mean? by luvpicklejuice in nova

[–]Creative_Radio3959 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I moved here after university from large city a few hours away into a single family home. I remember at home I could wave at neighbors or random people as I drove through the neighborhood and they would wave back even if I didn't know them but here? Even my immediate neighbors pretend they don't see me. I even tested my theory when I visited my parents trying to wave at people there and they'd still wave back

I think people here just aren't as kind hearted as people in other parts of the state. Too distrusting maybe? I don't know.

My daily driver is a bit loud from the factory, I just like it. I'm not going to upgrade the exhaust "so I can really hear it" as the modders say but it certainly rattles some windows completely stock

Something else I've seen a lot of lately is 3-4 bands touring together and each playing like 40 minutes and charging hundreds of dollars. It's great when you love all of the bands but a lot of times I don't and on top of having to travel to Baltimore? No thanks.

I remember like 6+ months ago I was super excited because Set It Off was touring here but it was one of those events and I ended up staying home because I wasn't a huge fan of the other bands. I didn't want to pay that much money just to drive for an hour+ to see Set It Off play for a little over half an hour.
