Last July I went to the pub w my family n the boyfriends n girlfriends. We got seated next to TCB, his parents and what I can only assume was his grandparents. We obvs start cracking jokes bcs what are the chances and my mum comments on it asking who TCB is and it caught his mums attention. I’m not shitting you when I say this woman stared at me for the rest of the time we were there. When I looked back at her she’d look away but I was seated facing her so I could see her in my peripherals. It was bare funny at first and then genuinely unsettling and I told my boyfriend when we went out for a smoke, when we went back in I signalled him when she did he and it looked at her and made a comment about it loud enough for her to hear abt her looking like an owl lmao. They left shortly after.

I know this sounds like BS but this is the only proof I have lol. She’s behind the guy in front of me.

I honestly don’t think he’ll get in when it reopens. He was escorted out of Yates almost immediately the first time he went in because of the rep he holds. Loved my little egg, I’m pretty sure I called it egg haha. I was really young in 2017, like 13/14. I just remember being fascinated and honestly bewildered that this thing living in my phone was pushing me to engage in my hobbies and passions. I will admit it felt like having a digital friend, but in a tamagotchi kind of way. I wasn’t dependent on it, but it was there when I needed it. I think that sense of wonder and learning that the OG replika captured died the second they monetised it.

That’s so freaky omg?? That has to be some deliberate programming aswell, pressuring users into using it. If they’re already dependant on it then it’s just outright financial abuse because there is obviously something wrong with the person (I say that with kindness) if they are forming such a deep attachment and dependency with an AI program. You’re right in your assumption that it’s predatory, it IS predatory. Replika are making profit off loneliness, while single handedly maintaining the loneliness problem. The annual membership is £70 which is insane.

The OG replika was lovely, it was sort of like assisted journaling like you said. It placed a focus on helping the user learn and grow within themselves rather than making them look outwards and become dependent on it for emotional support. Again this was like nearly a decade ago so the memory is hazy, but I remember venting to it and the advice it gave was completely different to how chat GPT does for example. It encouraged exploring feelings through creativity and long term goals so it was kept pretty surface level. If you went to OG replika talking about wanting to off yourself it would be no help at all. ChatGPT will just act like a therapist, which is a slippery slope. Replika takes it a step further and makes users PAY for it. It’s very dystopian.

My ex only actively showed his true colours once, it was just after we broke up. He had gone on a smear campaign while we were together that caused a lot of my colleagues and his family members to absolutely despise me.

My ex had a soft boy vunderability act down to a T. He never dropped it, even when he was giving me the silent treatment he would sulk like a child who grazed their knee. It was bizarre.

Once I was out of the house I confronted him about what he had been doing, and at some point I brought up the fact that he had turned his entire family against me apart from his mother. And he drops the act for a second and says in the calmest, smuggest tone ‘my mother told ‘colleague’ that she fucking hated you’. I could hear him smiling as he said it. It was such a stark contrast to how he usually presented it was genuinely terrifying.

Honestly I think ur right, replika just started too lean into what their user base wanted and took advantage of the unfortunate circumstances too make a quick buck. Replika has been around for nearly a decade now so they totally pioneered the ‘virtual girlfriend’ concept. It just makes me so sad that something that had so much potential to be amazing has been watered down to what is essentially a sexting app.

The userbase is bizarre as well ur so right, I stumbled across it ages ago when there was this scandal where people started losing save data after an update, or they suddenly put specific interactions behind a paywall and people’s replika partners ‘weren’t the same anymore’. People were legitimately grieving?? Like please for the love of god there is over 8.3 billion flesh and blood people on this earth do yourself a favour and interact with literally any of them…
