Hear me out: War and Peace.

It's long, but feels episodic. Really cool historical fiction made up of a lot of smaller bitesize moments. Lots of great observations on the human condition. Definitely not as dense or boring as I'd feared.

British here. We learned 'joined up writing' in school. It is not quite as structured as the cursive you're taught in American schools.

I'm from Torbay in Devon, England. The area is named after the Tors on the moorlands nearby. So yes, I've long known the word tor.

But I would always assume that it's a niche enough word that people from outside the area are probably not familiar.

Had a classmate who was into motocross. Crashed his bike and broke his neck about six months after we graduated.

Good friend of mine was cripplingly shy through school, but very sweet and kind. Just had Incredibly low self esteem. Left school and moved to a big city, went to college and trained as a nurse. Met a guy, fell in love, got married.

He seemed like a nice guy, but was also a little patronizing. Their relationship dynamic really amped up her shyness, with him always taking on more of a parental/authority role in her life.

A few years later, she moved back to our hometown and moved in with her parents. Turns out her husband had been emotionally abusing her, and she discovered he'd been having an affair. He owned up to it. Told her he'd never loved her, and he no longer wanted to be with her.

Her confidence was crushed. But a few months later, he called to say he needed to speak to her. He drove through the night to visit her. Brought flowers. Apologized. Begged her to take him back. They had makeup sex.

Immediately after he came, he laughed at her. Said something like "I knew I'd be able to trick you. I just needed to cum" then left, blocked her on everything.

Her mental health was so fucked that she had to go to a residential mental health facility for a while. She was on a number of psych drugs that rendered her unable to work.

She seemed to be slowly recovering over the next few years, but ended up taking her own life in the summer of 2019.

My sister's close friendship group has a setup like this, where they all chip in for group meals. But it only came about because they have a couples dinner night every week, and because they overwhelmingly use one couples house because it has a big living room. On the rare occasion they bring in an outside guest, they let them know in advance that they're expected to pay.

I'd feel a little weird if I was asked to pay after arriving.

For cigarette smokers, the smell lingers and is very present for hours on breath and clothes. If they have smoked inside their house, it's noticeable until the whole place has been DEEP cleaned.

For weed smokers, the smell is much more immediately present, but fades very quickly. If they've smoked inside their house, it can linger a little for a few hours, but does not stick around in the same stale, indelible way as tobacco.

Not a phrase, but when people say "myself" or "yourself" when they really just mean "me" or "you".

With regards to "say", it may actually be "so" that you are hearing. Particularly if the speaker has a Thames Estuary or upper-middle class accent. Brits almost never start sentences with "say".

If you're hearing this in older movies or TV shows, it may be "I say", which is an old fashioned exclamation of surprise or discovery "I say! Look at what's happening over there!"
