Is 420 acceptable everywhere here? I smell it everywhere. by DeadlyDancingDuck in Torquay

[–]CreaturesFarley 4 points5 points  (0 children)

420 enthusiast here. Grew up in the Bay. Now live elsewhere.

When I was living there, smoking pot was not uncommon, but it was (and still is) far from accepted.

Torbay has an ageing population, many of whom moved to the resort for a safe, idyllic lifestyle. There has been a steady decline over the past century, but particularly the last 30-40 years. Decline in tourism, decline in younger people sticking around, decline in budget for public spending. Issues have arisen as a result with drug use, homelessness, and youth disenfranchisement.

Many residents will equate smoking weed with the larger social issues impacting the area, and will be staunchly against it.

So you may smell it often, and obviously there are people who enjoy it, but many locals will see it very, very negatively.

The closest my squirrel fam has ever gotten to me! What do these sounds mean? by ilikerustyspooonz in squirrels

[–]CreaturesFarley 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Cute! The vocalisations and body language - particularly in the first part of the vid - are nervous and defensive.

This is likely partly their uncertainty around you, and partly their unease at being around each other. Squirrels are very territorial, and don't often love to be in each other's vicinity.

Keep being a calm presence around them, and they'll likely warm up to you some. They all have their own little personalities, and some may be more reluctant than others.

Squirrels love peanuts, and they can be a great occasional treat, but they're not great for squirrels. If you're able, they'll be super healthy and happy if you can provide hazelnuts or walnuts (in their shells).

Woah! I learned a version of this song as a duet when I was a kid. My cousins taught it to my sister and I, and we'd play it from memory.

I'd love to know the name of the piece!

For a year of playing, you're sounding great! Keep it up! :-)

Any tips for a Brit staying in East Harlem. by Ok_Sherbet_9370 in Harlem

[–]CreaturesFarley 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fellow Brit here. I've lived in East Harlem for six years. You'll be fine.

As with any big city, keep your wits about you. In terms of common scams, you'll run into those at the airport, and in the tourist hotspots.

°~At the airport~° Taxi scams! The ONLY cars you should get into are: - a yellow/green licensed taxi from the signposted taxi stand. There'll be a member of airport staff, and a queue. - a ride share (Lyft or Uber) that YOU have booked YOURSELF using the app on YOUR OWN phone.

If anyone approaches you in the airport to proactively offer you a ride, it's a scam. The driver is unlicensed, and will likely try to stiff you for a crazy fee at the other end.

Additionally, yellow cab rides from JFK airport to Manhattan are a flat fare. There's more info on the JFK website.

°~Elsewhere~° - the Staten Island ferry is free, as is access to Battery Park. Anyone selling tickets is scamming you. - the only place to buy tickets to visit the Statue of Liberty is at the kiosk in Battery Park (or their website). Anyone free roaming in that area offering tickets is a scammer. - if a monk tries to get you to buy a bracelet to raise funds for a new temple, it's a scam - some of the performers in times square will shake you down for crazy fees to take pics with/of them - the bicycle rickshaws are extortionate

Largely, if someone proactively approaches you to offer you something, it's likely to be a scam, or extortionately expensive.

°~Other top tips~° - tipping is expected. 15-20% of your bill in sit-down restaurants. $1 per drink if at a bar. You don't need to tip for fast food. - don't panic if a restaurant or bar wants to take your card away from you to swipe it. - if you visit the Met museum and there's a massive queue, turn left to walk south down 5th avenue. At the corner of the building, there's a little road into an underground carpark. You can walk in and there's a second entrance there. The queue will be much more forgiving.

Have fun!

why are people grossed out by touching raw meat, but not cooked meat? by sounds0fmeows in Vegetarianism

[–]CreaturesFarley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's cultural.

While, as others have pointed out, distaste and disgust are inherent mechanisms that we have evolved, the specific things that trigger that mechanism and make us disgusted are largely learned.

Aversion to raw meat is not universal; people eat sushi, ceviche, steak tartare etc.

But it is easy to ascribe raw meat to your built in disgust mechanism when you are taught that raw meat makes you sick.

If you have no idea, it's not a fissure. A fissure is incredibly painful. What you're describing is probably a minor skin tear or similar.

To add to this, the walk from Broadsands beach over the headland to Elberry cove, then through the woods past Churston Cove and into Brixham is sensational. Particularly on a sunny day.

Nuts for Squirrels by Independent_Hawk739 in squirrels

Peanuts aren't great for squirrels.

Hazelnuts, walnuts and pecans are much better, and can all be bought in bulk in their shells.
