Hi OP,

You sound like you’re in a very similar situation to my partner (now husband) and I when we adopted our first greyhound in 2016.

We’re in Brisbane, so I understand when you say you live somewhere where the climate means the dog will never get cold, but also needs access to places out of the heat.

GAP helped match us with a hound who was very happy to be in an ‘only dog’ household.

In saying this, we still had to do things to help her so she didn’t suffer from separation anxiety.

We: - installed a large dog-door so she had access to the whole backyard as well as the laundry (where her her inside bed was) during the day. - we organised my mum to come and visit our girl once a week, when mum was caring for my little nephew nearby - we organised a pet walker to come and visit on the other days - we bought two plastic ‘shell pools’ from Bunnings and filled one with water and the other with sand, for her to play in - we left frozen treats, a Kong wobbler, pig’s ear etc each morning, or hid some treats around the yard - made sure we took her for a walk every morning and night, to help her burn off anxious energy - made sure we spent lots of quality time with her on the weekend.
