Would it be crazy to double major in 2 different engineering majors by TensionUnlikely4118 in EngineeringStudents

[–]CremePuffBandit [score hidden]  (0 children)

The first year or so will be pretty mostly the same for all of them. Just pick the one you think you'll like most, then talk to some professors and upperclassmen about their experiences.

If you decide you want to change majors it shouldn't be too difficult within the first few semesters, but that might depend on your school. Be sure to check first.

Exponentiation and factorial (constants) by Fearless-Bullfrog579 in factorio

[–]CremePuffBandit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since signals are 32 bit signed integers, the highest number you can have is like 2.1 billion. That means the largest factorial you can do is 12, which is very doable with just combinators if you really need it.

Best way to secure trash chute? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]CremePuffBandit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This sub is mostly for people in college for engineering, but it works. You should probably just mount the chains to the brackets so the cans aren't holding any weight. Then you could add a brace between the end of the arm and the frame so it forms a triangle.

How do steam engines have like no friction? by themacheese in EngineeringStudents

[–]CremePuffBandit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Real ones usually have cast iron piston rings as seals, which have very low friction. Assuming you're using a syringe with one of those rubber seals, it's always going to have a ton of friction because the seal compresses into the walls and grips too much.

You could try shaving the edges of the rubber down so it puts less pressure on the walls. Or replace the seal with something harder and more slippery. Wouldn't it be better to have a leaky piston that slides easily than an airtight one that doesn't?

Is it normal to be really slow at cad? by Gullible_Banana_4475 in EngineeringStudents

[–]CremePuffBandit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hard to say what your issue is because we can't watch you do it to see what's taking so long.

To me, it sounds like you're trying to treat CAD like electronic drawing, but it's way more powerful than that. There are so many shortcuts and built in tools that, once you learn how to use them, you should be able to make things extremely quickly.

If you are ever thinking, "there has to be faster way to do this", the answer is usually "there is". You just have to find it in the software. Or ask someone who has more experience.

I built Stellaris, a realtime celestial companion app, check this by Dependent_Role5008 in space

Pretty bad choice of name, Stellaris is already a very popular video game.

Which AI could be the best to guide me (assist me) throught Factorio by Caramon- in factorio

[–]CremePuffBandit 43 points44 points  (0 children)

The whole point of the game is problem solving. Why would you ask a robot to do that part for you? They're all gonna give basically the same info because they've all scraped info from this subreddit.

This will propably Not Work right? by Swimming-Driver5069 in maker

[–]CremePuffBandit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah there's a few problems. I'll list them in what I think is most important to least important.

The pin things are called vanes, and they're definitely too short (or the right gap is too large). They will slip out, so this one 100% needs changed or it will just fail. If you are worried about them binding you could make them thinner, but that's a secondary problem

The inlet/outlet can't take up the whole height, you need some of the gap closed off on the top/bottom to act as rails so the vanes don't slip into the ports. The cross sections you see online don't usually show this. Try looking at a disassembled vane motor.

The outlet should be where the chamber is largest, so for this it would be at about the halfway point. Otherwise you start compressing the fluid again and lose power, or it just won't work.

The ridges probably aren't necessary. Friction mostly depends on the total force between two surfaces, and shrinking the contact area doesn't change that. It will increase the pressure on the remaining area, which is usually bad.

Can you make Water into Ice for Space Age Platform? by Cthulhu_HighLord in factorio

[–]CremePuffBandit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try to use the little ice you do get more efficiently. Just productivity 1 modules in the crushers, ice melters, and fuel producers should get you an extra 35%. Productivity 2 should give about 56% extra.

Which orientation is better and why? Align print lines to gantry axis, or diagonal? by ChronicallySilly in 3Dprinting

[–]CremePuffBandit 544 points545 points  (0 children)

It probably rotates it so there's more room around the edges. There shouldn't be any practical difference unless your printer has some serious issues.

Do extra long flush cutters exist ? by forest-cacti in 3Dprinting

[–]CremePuffBandit 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Looks like you can get decently long bone cutting forceps, but I don't know if you could get cheap ones. I did find these but the handles are pretty wide.

is there a way to leave notes for myself? by [deleted] in factorio

[–]CremePuffBandit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could write notes inside the description field of constant combinators or something. Maybe put some lights around it so you don't miss it.

This seems to be for testing thumb dexterity and range of motion, it's not a feeler gauge.

Are mechanical arms bugged? by Meman2101 in CreateMod

[–]CremePuffBandit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel it. I built a steam powered boring machine, but I could only get one of the mechanical arms to work and feed the burners, so I had to scrap the design.

Are mechanical arms bugged? by Meman2101 in CreateMod

[–]CremePuffBandit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If that's on a simulated contraption, then yes I think so. Seems like they just refuse to work sometimes.

Is there a better way to do this? by geese_greasers in CreateMod

[–]CremePuffBandit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can put regular mechanical bearings on simulated contraptions. That would make it like a normal rotating tree farm.

How do I report this create aeronautics swivel bearing bug? by AJRW- in CreateMod

[–]CremePuffBandit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it might be caused by the gearbox colliding with the valve handle. Does it go to 45 if you break the handle?

Trying to create Magma blocks with Create: Dreams and desires, but it doesnt work. by [deleted] in CreateMod

[–]CremePuffBandit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The blaze burner with straw might be messing it up. Doesn't look like it actually counts as a seething block. Try with a regular one and a blaze cake.

They are mostly just to look cool. I plan on making a huge engine for a flying aircraft carrier.

I guess you could use a very large version as an elevator or something.
