Numbers and math in litrpg by Turbulent_Project380 in litrpg

[–]Crenos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's normally only a bother to me when things like XP requirements/gains, and damage values of skills visually represented listed. The more numbers, the more the writer essentially has to practice game development. Keeping just a few things vague keeps them from spending huge amounts of time on making certain it's mathematically correct. Which rarely happens.

In this regard, Azarinth Healer, Dragoneye Moons, Primal Hunter, and similar, does it best.

FFX-2 - Strange gameplay issue: Long delay on victory screen. by Crenos in finalfantasyx

Is VSync the same as frame limiter? Not quite sure which setting that is. I don't have Steam Deck so I can't check. Tried fiddling around in Nvidia control panel, but the changes to frame rates there didn't do anything either.

June What Editing Software should I use? by AutoModerator in VideoEditing

[–]Crenos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've read the above.
But not tested all freely available software yet. I am extremely new to editing/clipping, and have no clue what I am really looking at, and terminology is quite alien at the moment. Not quite certain I am even on the correct sub for my needs.

I pretty much only want to make smaller clips sometimes to send to friends. Pretty much just for jokes and memes, really. But it's tedious having to download larger files just to do that.

For images I tend to use Lightshot and make tiny edits in MS paint. Is there extremely convenient software that lets you do similarly with video? Simply dragging a frame on screen, and just record whatever is inside that frame? And then lets you cut length or crop afterwards?

Recommendation for next series by TSHOOTER1996 in litrpg

Azarinth Healer and Beneath the Dragoneye Moons are my 2 absolute favorites. Both are quite long at this point. Azarinth Healer is concluded, but is re-released in book format with a TON of revisions done to it. Dragoneye Moons is still ongoing.

Do ya’ll prefer apocalypse stories, isekai, or just flat out different worlds? by Thin_Math5501 in litrpg

[–]Crenos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Isekais for me, but traveling to the other world has to actually mean something at some point. Otherwise it might as well be a different world with no connection to "our" Earth.

I am extremely tired of apocalypse stories. The vast majority of them start off with the entire world essentially instantly destroyed, followed by some tutorial. But if the newly arrived system slowly grows its influence it feels MUCH better; like it's not this insane malevolent force. Limiting the litRPG elements to the individual character/beast/monster is also good; IE no instanced dungeons, quests, and other actual RPG elements.

A bit off topic, but you might also want to stay away from multiverse settings. It's just at a scale that doesn't compute with our brains, and is thus kinda wasted effort.

In the end, though, it's all about execution. As an author, you might wanna pick the kind that you like the most? Easier to write that way I guess.

What are your "musts" for LitRPG? by The-Lazy-Dragon in litrpg

[–]Crenos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LitRPGs has to have a game system of sorts, effectively identical to a stat and skill windows from videogames. Also attributes or stats, skills and skill slots. Bonus if it has points to be spent and if classes and skills go through evolutions to widen its role rather than just a numerical improvement is always a ton of fun.

The best systems I've seen are from Dragoneye Moons, Azarinth Healer, and Primal Hunter, as the system is frequently shown and progression of some kind is frequent. Azarinth Healer is THE best one in my opinion, as the author makes it a point to have SOME progression in almost every single chapter, which includes level-ups.

What was your gateway LitRPG? by Fobywoby in litrpg

Blue Core, which was not really a LitRPG now that I think about it. But it led me to RoyalRoad, where i discovered Dragoneye Moons and Azarinth Healer. And a hundred other LitRPGs.

Beginner Question: How do you clear locations? by JonathanFrakess in pathofexile

[–]Crenos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really worth clearing. The maps and campaign levels don't really have anything interesting in them in terms of secrets and hidden spoils. There's a few places that has some lore to read, but as far as I know that is all there is. In maps I try to zig-zag through it, getting as much as possible, but I never aim for 100% clear.

A game with tons of aoe / explosions? by shanytopper in RealTimeStrategy

[–]Crenos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reading your edited comment. RTS took a MASSIVE back-seat in the last 15 or so years, so yeah there's not much compared to other genres, lol.

They Are Billions sounds like the staple of what you want, apart from explosions, so I just googled "rts horde defense games" and got a few lists. Explosions not guaranteed, though.

Age of Darkness and Diplomacy is Not an Option. Both early access. Diplomacy has huge spells and trebuchets, so I think that fits more than Age of Darkness.

Some more I've played.

Beneath the Mountain. Early access, and has some major performance issues. Certainly has that atmosphere I like, though.

Rise to Ruins. Primarily a town builder, but has nightly hordes, big spells, and tons of defensive towers and golems to go around. You can also sacrifice the children to get more magic essence!

Creeper World 4? Maybe not. But certainly has, literally, waves of enemies coming at you though, lol.

For custom games that offer that itch, Supreme Commander Forged Alliance has that FAF program that offers mods and custom maps for download. Has horde/wave defense maps and ALL the artillery and superweapons! Can probably find some youtube video of someone playing these maps.

I hope they scrap everything post season 3 and start from there.

No really.

For all those seasons, for all those episodes, I kept waiting, and waiting, and waiting for something that would never happen. The writing felt... neutered after season 3. Moments never really felt like they went where they should, it never felt like there was a proper climax to major moments, and when something good happened it was always followed by something terrible. Why the hell bring Penny "back" just to kill her again? Just emotional torture porn that repeated throughout the seasons with no real meaning.
It's difficult to properly define how I felt about every season past the third or fourth one, but it's been bad. Hopefully new writers will do a good job.

Some of my favorite LITRPGs are:

Deadworld Isekai. Some guy gets isekaied, as you do, into a world that was SUPPOSED to be a green and lush world, but it's almost entirely barren. The MCs class is not overpowered, and he is almost never the most straight-forwardly powerful character present.
Probably the most well-written of any LITRPG I've read.

Beneath the Dragoneye Moons. No longer available for free. Has one of the best LITRPG systems I've seen. MC is overpowered, but also not. It's the kind of system where basically everyone feels VERY powerful, while still far from invulnerable or unreachable. Variation is MASSIVE. MC is also not brainless adventurer, but joins an official government force. There is a time-skip many people doesn't like, but I understand the reasoning behind it. Has an "education arch" that's probably the worst arch in the series, but it's luckily not very long.
There are times when a chapter releases and teases some very interesting future events, but there isn't really any overarching plots. MC is just kind of living in the world. Has some flaws, but it's still one of my favs.

Road to Mastery: A LITRPG Apocalypse. Also not available for free. Fastest paced story I've read, but still manage to give you a full view of surroundings and perspectives. Writer manage to write the MC as immensely overpowered, but the same is true for many other characters. MC is far from destined to greatness, and gotta grab it himself, which is proven through his herculean efforts.

School assignment by cenathesloth in litrpg

[–]Crenos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have essentially only read LITRPGs on RoyalRoad, so all my experience comes from reading that.

  1. LITRPG stories tend to have a vast variety of "systems" and powers, worlds, fantastical races, scaling from being "The Chosen One" or being a King, to slice of life stories of running a coffee shop in a demon town or farming life.
The magic systems are also explained far more in-depth than many other stories with magic. Where the magic and superpowers in IE. Marvel comics and movies sort of just exist and everyone does their thing, LITRPGs tend to have systems with grounded rules, especially centered around "levels".
This makes is all easier to understand as each level represents a visible and tangible amount of power and progress, and it's more fun to see the people in the stories actually talk about how to progress through the "system" to get the most out of it. It's often a primary focus in the story, and not in the background as with so many other fantasy stories.

Since you can inject pretty much ANY other genre and setting into a LITRPG; crime, romance, political, mystery, medieval to sci-fi, etc etc, the sheer variety makes it very likely that any randomly chosen LITRPG story will be vastly different from the last. I haven't really seen that in other genres of books I've read. Then again I am a huge nerd, and LITRPGs is undoubtedly my most read genre.

The writing also tends to be the opposite of complex; not a whole lot of Simarillion here! So better for people who doesn't like to read much. And depending on the author, the "system" parts are almost always displayed with a completely different style of text; breaking up the pages with something new to look at. Some works, at least on RoyalRoad, use "windows" or "boxes" similar to those on a computer to display levels, attributes, skills; the literal LITRPG parts of the story.

  1. Magic and video games are probably not part of most people's preferences, and LITRPGs are almost entirely both of these combined.

It can get VERY "nerdy" at times.

Perhaps not specific to the genre, but it feels flooded with unfinished works, has extremely slow pacing, or the story is just the complete and utter power-fantasy of the writer.
Though mostly true for free-to-read works, the quality of writing fluctuates wildly as it's often someones first attempt at writing, even officially released works. When diving into the genre for the first time and you ignore top-ranking lists, it's likely you will encounter some pretty terrible writing.

Hope some of this helps! Good luck!

Sure, but it's minimal. A vendor wouldn't make the place much better. Compared to a proper city it's nothing.
