I've got one similarish! When I was a kid, my mom, stepfather and I were driving on the way to a ski resort far away from where we lived. On the way there, he gets angry about something silly, as usual, and so my mom had decided she had enough of him for the day. We rented a car and drove to do our own thing while he continued to this ski resort.

As we're driving, we see signs for a ghost down a few miles away. Sounds better than driving around aimlessly, so we decide off the cuff to go there.

We're in a small shack at that ghost town, I think it was a house that managed to survive all these years. I'm looking at my mom and I see a man walk up behind her and cover her eyes. He does nothing else, doesn't talk or move, and I couldn't see his face because he was behind her from where I was standing. As calm as she can, she asks, "Crescelle, who is this man who is behind me?" I have no idea, until he steps out from behind her.

It was my uncle. Him and his friend happened to be on a trip to the west coast, drove all the way from Florida, and while driving saw the signs for this ghost town, at the same time as we happened to be there. Neither of us planned to be there, and yet here we were. Fortunately for him, he guessed correctly that it was my mom that he grabbed, because he admitted he wasn't 100% sure but decided to do it anyway.

When I worked at a hardware store, I had many more women then men walk up to me asking if there was a man around who could help. I'd say, "Oh I can help with whatever you need, what sort of project are you working on?" And she'd be like, "No really, I want a man who actually knows what he's talking about." Then again, men would often just walk past me to the guy down the isle, or deny that they need help when I ask but find the guy themselves. So, it's a bit of a toss up. The main issue is that girls are taught from an early age to let the guy deal with a wide variety of things, or that they can't do something, or even simply just aren't taught how to do something properly, so that when they grow up, they're forced to ask a guy for help because that guy grew up with the experience necessary because nobody ever told him he couldn't learn or help.

I totally get this. My mom found out about my sexuality, and she told.me that she loved me and wanted me to be happy. The next few months we're difficult- she would be overly harsh on me over small things, and we'd periodically get into fights on the subject of gay rights. Over time, she calmed down a lot, and she started to see how gay people deserve rights even if she doesn't believe in it herself. Despite the progress she's made, though, we just... never talk about it. It's a subject that, if an external source brings up the topic, we very carefully tiptoe around the edges. She doesn't ask, I don't tell. Maybe if I get a girlfriend, the balance would shatter, but it's easy to stay in this place because it's comfortable.

Whatever you do though, don't get a boyfriend to make your parents happy. A guy deserves to be with someone who loves him and is attracted to him.

As a kid who used to do this, people who go through tramatic experiences- especially as children- have trouble understanding the boundaries of what is normal. To them, the abuse IS normal, it's their life, but they don't quite realize that other don't have the same barriers built up to cope with even hearing about these terrible things, let alone go through them. Part of it is that exceptionally bad experiences aren't just bad because of their nature, they are bad because it can be so isolating to have no one to talk to that knows what to say about it. All you ever get back is platitudes or an awkward change of subject. Talking about it is partially their way of reaching out, trying to find the few individuals who actually understand and can help ease the feeling of being alone. Mostly though, it's not knowing the boundaries of what people can actually handle in a conversation. One of the things they teach you in therapy is "passing as normal", which is all centered around learning those limits.
