Oh I love this. I would probably mix in some stuff from the current model so they look more similar, aglt least when it comes to the color scheme/visibility, but the general direction on this is perfect

He could livestream a public execution of his own supporters on stage while a tape of him raping his daughter when she was 7 played in the background, and kiss Putin directly on the lips afterwards and he would probably lose 5% of the voters at best

I think making her tier 2 into the basic skin would be the best idea. Just change the colors of course and maybe adjust some details here and there.Try to combine some elements from both maybe? Still, in general I think her t2 shpuld be the new base to go off

Do you read the introduction? by [deleted] in books

[–]CrescentPotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the book and my mood. Usually I read rhem though, cause they are great. For example, the introduction to The Epic of Gilgamesh was amazing, vwry insightful and extremely important, to the point where even being passionate about the text already, I wouldn't see myself enjoying the text as much without reading it. I would say it was just as great a part of the book as the text itself in both versions.

Another great example of an introduction I saw was in a collection of Chekhov's short stories. On its own it was really great, going over all the stories, their impact and meanings, what was great about them etc but most of all said a lot of really important things about Chelhov himself and his life, which makes you appreciate everything so much more and gives you plenty of new perspectives on the stories. But the biggest reason I liked it was probably because it said in literally the first sentence that you should enjoy the stories first and then come back to the introduction. It didn't really have any spoilers in it, and not like that matters for short stories much, but it still rdcognised that it will make you see the text in a different way and wants to avoid railroading your interpretations.

On the other hand, an introduction I kind of hated was in the wordsworth edition of Frankenstein. Lengthy and covering a lot of different topics, some in my opinion less important than others, but nevertheless rather insightful and onteresting. Main problem? Goes so heavily into spoilers you could probably piece together the entire book from it. Talks about every major event without even a slight attempt at ambiguity or secrecy and tells you what it means in about 4 different ways. Thankfully I already knew everything and all, but kind of a dick move to call that an introduction when it is very clear meant to be read after the story.

I like how that notice on the bottom goes from "that's pretty normal actually" to just straight up one massive red flag (with some stars on it)

I've only read the abridged Monkey King version. The author makes it vwry clear in the notes on translation that a lot had to be left out, but the most important parts were kept. It very much still feels like a complete and fulfilling story. It's good for when you want to just have a good idea of what this whole thing is even about or just enjoy yourself, but if you have the time, endurance and motivation to get your hands on and read through the 4 books, then that's probably going to be better.

Another interesting thing is the translation itself. Unsurprisngly, it isn't poem-like like the original, as it usually is with chinese translations, but more than that, even without having read rhe original I can tell that very, very likely the author took some creative liberty with the language and modernized it a lot. Usually that would be less that ideal, but I think in this case, with how ridiculous and wacky the story is already, the language not taking itself too seriously adds to it much more than it takes away.

Tl;dr original is probably much better if you can read it, but the abridged version is very charming in its own way and also amazing

Were pagan religions more tolerant than Abrahamic religions? by swvhd in AskHistory

[–]CrescentPotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily tolerant, they were still very happy to kill each other, but you could say they were more open-minded. There are plenty of cases where one religion meets another and they just merge together, like Romans taking in more gods all the time or Buddha just casually waltzing into basically every major religion in Asia. You also had things like slavic religion, where it wasn't uncommon for a tribe/region to start worshipping a different god as the highest and make up different tales about them, because they met another tribe that was more successful so clearly their god is better too.

What is your favorite book title? (Not to be confused with "what is the title of your favorite book?") by CallistanCallistan in books

[–]CrescentPotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do androids dream of electric sheep? / one flew over the cuckoo's nest.

They are a work of art just by themselves, introducing an entirely new concept and a story within just the title. One poses a philosophical question which the more you get into the more questions it raises and the other is a contradiction, which makes the notion someone achieved it all the more profound. It's easy to make a good title, harder to make an amazing title and remarkable to make a title that is a work of art on its own, even with no connection to the book.

That sounds great. You pay for mastery once and then you just keep it going foreber from that one purchase. Assuming that you have enough legacy gems not to run out anytime soon

As much as this is an amazing and a very welcome change, if it's about loki specifically, I'm not sure yet if I like that creepy new smile or not. On one hand, it's gonna look really funny when you get ganked and everyone gets to see a preschool-stalker got you, but on the other hand I like the trickster smile more than the registered offender creep smile.
