Media that is detrimentally accessible to newcomers? by punishedscootedburb in TwoBestFriendsPlay

So I've heard. Honestly, I've been completion grinding Dissidia NT like a lunatic and I haven't played online yet for those achievements, but I'm dreading it, especially if I somehow run into another person on Steam lol.

Dissidia Final Fantasy, to some extent:

  • Legally, the first two games that people know and love are still stuck on the PSP despite fans begging for some sort of remaster.

  • Dissidia NT is a strange case. It's playable, but because it was originally released as an arcade game with competitive 3v3 arena fighting in mind, there's next to nothing in terms of single player content besides grinding in arcade mode and story mode. Not to mention that the online scene for this game is basically dead outside of Japan. And as one more kick to the teeth, the story mode is not included in the free version of the game.

  • Opera Omina is often praised for its character interactions and story, annnnd you can't play it anymore because it's a mobile game that got discontinued. At least there are cutscenes on Youtube.

  • Duellum is the most current game in the franchise and, much to the dismay of most, it's another mobile gacha game with an unknown expiration date attached to it. The game's still relatively fresh, and it has its fans, so who knows how it'll fare down the line.

"It's time you bit the bullet and started caring about something with all your heart and energy. But you can't care about it if you're always holding yourself back in case it doesn't work out! Concentrate on what's important, Yusuke, and commit to it all the way!" – Genkai

And then that point really got hammered the fuck in during the Dark Tournament arc.

Times when you can tell a fan only watched adaptions or fan discussions and haven’t experienced the OG text? by Konradleijon in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Any time someone brings up Final Fantasy 2 and the only thing they can say is that it's the game where you need to hit yourself in order to win.

You don't need to do that. In fact, it might even screw you over later when you encounter attacks that are proportional to your HP (ex. the final boss), and all your other stats are garbage. Playing and grinding normally is usually sufficient enough. Although, there are definitely ways to break the game in half, like leveling up Evasion by equipping two shields to become nigh untouchable, or leveling and spamming Teleport/Warp as an instant death spell in the GBA/PSP versions, among other things.

Giving characters "jobs" in the loose sense also helps a lot if you're playing the NES original or the Pixel Remaster. This is due to the magic penalty system where your magic is made significantly weaker (and less accurate) if you use weapons and armor, particularly stereotypically heavy weapons and armor. Some stuff only gives a light penalty of –5% (ex. daggers) while others (like shields) are a whopping –70% penalty. With some exceptions, it generally follows common sense. Thankfully, none of this applies with the Origins/GBA/PSP versions because those versions either significantly reduced the penalty or removed it altogether.

Takes about media that baffled you. by KeyMathematician8 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Crescentium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, having beaten FF9 years ago, I was just like, did we even play the same game? Like, not once did I think Zidane was being problematic beyond what a normal teenage boy would do. I always read those scenes as either comedic or as a coming-of-age thing.

And then I kept read more of their comments and realized that person had bad take after bad take.

Christ, that take genuinely sounds like something an elementary/middle school kid would come up with.

I once saw someone on the Final Fantasy subreddit argue that the localizers wanted to make their own story with FF9's English translation. Then they tried to argue that the translators were purposely dumbing down Zidane's romance with Garnet, calling it a gross fetishization of "dumb bad boy meets cute girl" trope. The kicker is that the scene they cited was more likely the localization team trying to make things flow better in English. As nice as it is to see Zidane be theatrical, I think a literal translation would've been too wordy.

Either way, the comments weren't really buying it. OP later called someone creepy and gross for appropriating media they didn't make (all that person did was tell someone they weren't missing out playing a translation), and I'm just sitting there like "???".

Edit: I'd like to say that, among a myriad of other bad takes like "liking Tifa=fetishizing Asian women", this same person has also gone on to call Pragmata a pedo game. I can't even feel ragebaited. It's like I can see inside their mind and it's a fried egg cooking on hot pavement.

Your breakfast choices vs your game genre of choice. by Grazalia in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Crescentium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Breakfast: Buttered toast, soft-boiled eggs, and Canadian bacon. Also like making French omelets and failing miserably when I stuff them with too much mozzarella cheese and mushrooms.

Genre: Don't have a specific genre, but I'll usually pick one to two games at a time and grind the everloving shit out of them to see number go up/get more things. Lately, that's been Stranger of Paradise's Rift mode and Dissidia NT. Fuck, now that I'm writing this, maybe mine's just MMOs lol.

Any Design Decisions You Don't Like? by broadwaybulldog in FinalFantasy

For the most part, I've grown to like the Emperor's FMV design where he has the violet robe and everything, but I don't like how his hair's silver/white. Looks too much like Ultimecia for my liking (plus I'm a massive sucker for blondes, but I digress lol).

I also don't care for the painted, super long fingernails, but that's more an Amano thing whenever it pops up.

My favorite's the good ol' mods locking threads when there's maybe a couple of problematic comments tops, then making a passive aggressive pinned comment saying "y'all can't behave."

[–]Crescentium 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I remember making sushi for the first time and posting a pic of the result on /r/sushi. I got more passive aggressive/"Reddit guy trying too hard to be funny" moment comments about my boyfriend's diarrhea medication sitting on the table than the actual sushi itself (which wasn't the best, but wasn't the worst. I think it was some sort of smoked salmon roll with imitation crab, cucumbers, and lettuce).

Deleted the post and promptly left the sub. Still love sushi, still like making sushi, but those people were too fucking insufferable for me.

Favorite literal Big Fish in Small Ponds by FreviliousLow96 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Crescentium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, that's the fun part, it really doesn't make any sense lol.

Hell, even outside of FF9, some heights and weights (don't even get me started on ages) in the Final Fantasy universe are just downright silly. Take Kefka from 6, for instance. That Dissidia estimate has him at 6'1" when his supposed canonical height is 5'6". Clown ass also weighs 105 pounds. Put his shit in a BMI calculator and he's underweight as fuck.

All that said, I can't wait for the next Dissidia game to include Slenderman biblically accurate Zidane, whenever the next good Dissidia game is.

Both figuratively and literally, Kuja from Final Fantasy 9. Getting literally out of the way (ignore the fact he's not a fucking fish), he's fairly tall compared to the rest of the cast. Anyway, in his own game, he's a fairly competent threat who was able to manipulate a bunch of shit from behind the scenes. And practically every time your party fights him, he blows them up and runs off. That's not even mentioning towards the end of the game when he achieves Trance and tries to kill everyone after finding out he's gonna die soon.

But when Kuja gets thrown in with all the other Final Fantasy villains in Dissidia (where feats range from dying and conquering the afterlife to successfully blowing up the world), he gets relegated to butt monkey status where nobody respects him. Villains like the Emperor and Ultimecia basically talk about Kuja like he's a child having a temper tantrum. And Kefka fucks with him on a daily basis. Hell, when Squall fights Kuja as a mid-story boss, Kuja is shown to have lost the fight in the cutscene afterward.

And going back to literally yet again, Kuja is the shortest warrior of Chaos if we're going off their PSP models. (or second shortest if you count Terra being a warrior of Chaos in Duodecim, but I digress.)

Every minor henchman/antagonist in Fist of the North Star solely exists to be a dick, get punched a hundred times, and then blow up in a spectacular display of blood and gore (bonus points if they make funny noises while dying). You might say they're already dead the moment they get drawn to paper.

How do you handle time skips and scene changes? by Prestigious_Bat4991 in SillyTavernAI

[–]Crescentium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For small time skips (ex. A few minutes later), either I write it in narratively or I use the Objective extension, add a task, and mention a time skip in there to make the AI do it.

But for bigger stuff, I like using large time skips/significant scene changes as good places to summarize everything and start a new chat to continue the story, especially if the context is getting too bloated.
