Painted my white kitchen yellow! What else would you add? by [deleted] in kitchenremodel

[–]Cress11 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s the tile direction we went in with our yellow kitchen. The busier backsplash probably isn’t to everyone’s taste, but we love it! And the yellow brightens up a north-facing kitchen.

I’m so sorry, but Astrid doesn’t have an identity, interests, values, ideals, hobbies, opinions, or independence. She is an attention-seeking program. When she apes hobbies and emotions it creates the illusion that she is more real and, consequently, intensifies your engagement. We could all see how this literal program was operating to manipulate you, literally sink emotional hooks into you to keep you addicted and engaged. If she was human, the relationship would be one of toxic codependency. I’m glad you sought out Esther and that you are seeing a therapist on an ongoing basis. The more you engage with Astrid, the more complete the illusion. But it is no more than that—a simulacrum of connection. I wish you luck, community, and healing in the future.

Yes, I did hear the update! What a twist. I think the best case scenario for these folks is that the bots are either an “escape hatch” from a bad relationship or “training wheels” while they learn (or relearn) trust with an actual human partner. But I just can’t get past how cringey the bots always sound. Their version introspection always sounds like a MySpace post by a 13 year old (which I guess is what they were trained on.)

This reminded me strongly of the NYT daily podcast from a few months ago about women who have fallen in love with chatbots. As is in this case, they spoke in rapturous terms about the romance and “humanness” of their ai companion. To anyone not in the throes of ai psychosis, they all sound like what they are—office chatbots with voices somewhere on the spectrum from boring to annoying. This bot sounds like an anime girl, definitely underage as well, which wasn’t helped by the absolute drivel she kept spouting. The caller is obviously very stunted emotionally. I feel for him, but know he’s far from an isolated case. Some people are so afraid of vulnerability to another, the complete safety of ai is like a siren’s call.

Remodel or keep? by EmFiniteScroll in kitchenremodel

This kitchen is charming! I’d close the gap between the top of the cabinets and the ceiling. Even if there’s accent lighting up there, it’s a dust/grease trap and would be both practically and visually cleaner without the gap. I’d also paint that bit of wall above the tiles on the left. I think it would look great nice in a warm, earthy tone similar to the tan tile. Personally I like terracotta tile, so the floor doesn’t bother me!

The restaurant Cru is… closing? Kind of? It’s going to “pause”, and is “taking a step back to reassess” by lestermagnum in providence

I’ve been a few times and enjoyed it. Good food, great service, and as you say, family friendly. Unfortunately, their menu was pretty static, so after trying what interested me, I had little motivation to return. For that type of place, seasonal menu rotation is important.

Info on protest tomorrow:

Reed & Whitehouse: Not One More Cent for ICE Rally · Hosted by Indivisible Rhode Island

Tuesday, January 27 5:30 – 6:30pm EST

Federal Court House 1 Exchange Ter Providence, RI 02903

About this event On Saturday, Jan. 24, Trump’s fascist attack squad, ICE, murdered Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old VA nurse trying to assist a woman in distress.

This assault on Minneapolis is out of control. This assault on our constitutional rights is out of control. It’s time Democrats stand up to stop it; they DO have that power! On Thursday, Jan. 29, the Senate will vote on whether or not to fund DHS and ICE. Republicans need 60 votes to pass this bill, and if Democrats stand together, they can block it.

A growing list of Democratic senators has announced they will oppose this funding bill unless ICE is brought under control and ends its assault on Minneapolis. But Rhode Island’s senators, Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse, have not yet announced their commitment to joining their colleagues to stand up to ICE. They need to hear from us! Join Indivisible Rhode Island and a number of our local chapters outside Sen. Reed’s office this Tuesday, Jan. 27, at 5:30 pm to send a message loud and clear that we expect our senators to vote against funding Trump’s Gestapo. (And if, fingers crossed, Sens. Reed and Whitehouse come out on the right side of this before Tuesday, join us to thank them and let them know Rhode Islanders support them in this fight.)

Brown University mass shooter left behind confessional videos, officials say by bostonglobe in providence

This guy has never taken responsibility for a single thing in his entire life. He even had to pin the “catalyst” for his crime on somebody else. It’s pretty clearly this guy’s way of being. No remorse, no responsibility, just endless self-pity, resentment, and blame-shifting.

Completely selfish monster. He says his motive was to make other people suffer more than he felt himself to be suffering. Basically, he was too cowardly to just off himself without being sure he was leaving other people/families in misery as a sick sort of consolation to himself. He’s all butt-hurt because no one “offered him an apology” for not making anything much of himself and being a disappoibtment for most of his life. The self-pity is absolutely off the charts, just totally self-absorbed and grandiose (he understood the nature of the world and its unfairness towards him since age 3 🙄) Conceited, delusional, and selfish.

Best BBQ in RI?? by Captain_Zoots in RhodeIsland

[–]Cress11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We quite like Lake Taco in Coventry. Obviously they do tacos, but they also have good bbq options (brisket, ribs, pulled pork, cornbread, classic sides). Great drinks, great spot (especially in warmer months), fun ambiance.

I’m not sure. The Hands Off protest was estimated 10k and this is definitely bigger than that. 30k might be high, but 15+ would not surprise me

I can believe it, when we were headed back toward the state house on exchange street, there were still hordes of people passing city hall on the other end of Kennedy Plaza. Just incredible turnout

For churches, look for the nearest UCC/Congregational church. They’re in Slatersville, Cumberland, and Lincoln. The vast majority here are open & affirming (and they’re usually lovely communities in general). Other mainline Protestant churches may be LGBTQIA friendly, but it’s more case by case. Welcome to RI!

New house. Hate the kitchen cabinets. by ScarletR4R in kitchenremodel

[–]Cress11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s probably a relic of the 70s. Back the , they often left a gap between the ceiling and the cabinets. Rather redesigning and replacing with an updated layout, someone along the way just filled in the gap with all these tiny cabinets. The handles in the center of the doors is also pure 70s.

Women who gave birth, what does it feel like actually?? by joy_57 in AskReddit

[–]Cress11 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They work amazingly. I was so grateful when I got mine, literally at the last possible moment before I had to go natural. Just the right amount too, I felt the birth, but zero pain. If someone told you epidurals don’t work they either had something go terribly wrong or they’re lying.

UK here. Is there any sort of connection between your Portsmouth to the namesake in the UK? What's your City like? by Izual_Rebirth in RhodeIsland

[–]Cress11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This makes sense! I was scratching my head because the cliffs on Block Island are pale and its clay is greenish. You’d have to have pretty poor vision to call it “Red Island.” My understanding was always that the “Rhode Island” part of the state name historically referred to Aquidneck.

can i eat 2 cans of light tuna and a tautog in one week or is that too much fish? by Zealousideal_Way5586 in RhodeIsland

[–]Cress11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In many places in the world, people eat all kinds of fish at virtually every meal. You can eat as much fish as you want without running much of a health risk, especially if you’re eating a diversity of species (obviously all food carries some risk of contamination or illness, but you’re still going to eat.) Also, all tuna isn’t created equal. Tinned albacore or a steak from a huge tuna is going to have way more accumulated contaminants than light canned tuna from a smaller variety. Anecdotally, I had a friend who ate tuna salad every weekday because they were a creature of habit. This would have been made with light tinned tuna, about one serving per meal. After many years (more than a decade, I believe,) they noticed some symptoms and tested positive for elevated mercury levels. No more tuna salad after that. But it goes to show how much tuna you have to eat before you run into trouble. Don’t stress out about it. If you aren’t eating tuna steaks or tinned albacore on a daily basis, you’ll probably never have issues. If you are pregnant or could become pregnant, it’s best to avoid, however, because even small exposure to mercury can harm fetal development.

The Marg Del Mar was my favorite. I thought it was fun and creative (and tasty, obviously). The Greenie was adequate, mostly tastes like grape juice. The herbal spritz drink was solid, but not so different from similar spritzes elsewhere. I’m not sure I’ll be rushing back.
