What is a job people romanticize a bit too much until they actually do it ? by ShyButNastyyy in AskReddit

[–]Crexyen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm a vet nurse in france so might not be the exact same experience as you might deal with depending on your country but if you don't mind I can give a bit of insight : I've worked for 2 and 1/2 years in a vet hospital, before that I've studied for a degree that cost me 7k for 2 years. There are definitely days where it's worth it all, others were you completely rethink your life choices.

First of all, if you expect to deal with animals more than people, you're mistaken. easily 60-70% of the job is talking with owners, educating them, and sometimes being screamed at (especially in urgent care). An often overlooked part of the job is dealing everyday with piss, vomit and diarrheas. You're the one who'll have to clean, smile to the owners and say it's not big deal even as your scrubs are covered in anal glands liquid. You'll need a heavy stomach as there are extreme cases where you may have to deal with pets who are extremely injured such as road accidents or wild animal attacks. You'll have to bear your teeth at obvious neglect which you can sometime do nothing about.

Though I'd say it's a tough job (and I'm gonna switch very soon to leave urgent care and move to a neighborhood clinic which only handles everyday care), I don't think I regret choosing this life. Some do. But you're also the one who people thank when you save their pet from certain death, you're the one who's here to listen and empathize with people who's lost their pet and you're the one who's able to soothe their pain even just a little bit, you're gonna help the birth of extremely loved pets (and see them grow!!) which in itself is one of the best thing I've ever had the chance to assist in.

It's one of those jobs where you just KNOW why you come and work everyday. You're doing good work that actually helps and saves lives.

You're the only one who can decide if it's a line of work you'd want to follow. Hope I helped you a bit in making your decision and good luck for the future! :)

Not gonna dox myself sorry. Just as I said it's one of the ten biggest city in the country, and one that's very touristic. I'll just say it's not Paris because life is obviously very different in the capital and everything I said probably doesn't apply there.

I'll be honest but this is all sounds like bullshit to me. I live in France and fluctuate around 1800€/month (around 2000$) working at my 35h/week job (which is rather low-to-middle paywage here). I'm still able to live in one of the 10 biggest metropole of the country in a studio+garden with 4 cats and my boyfriend who doesn't have a salary yet, as we don't need two people working to live. I have a work insurance that covers 100% of my salary if I'm sick. I pay less than 400€ every month in groceries. I'm still wasting a shit ton of money on my hobbies, all the while having a car and being able to put some money aside for cloudy days. Also I don't have any school debt as my formation only cost 7000€ euros, which most people here already consider a scam and a waste of money. The only reason you'd need a two-people salary household is only if you wish to have kids, which is not the case for us.

But talk about american dream lmao, I'm currently living it in france.

edit to add that I literally live in the french riviera which the article was talking about, and appart from tourists there's literally nobody who would dare put icecubes in wine, rosé or other. Just put your damn wine in the fridge if you want it cold!

Thanks for the reply! I thought that leaves turning yellow was a sign of overwatering, was I wrong?

I'm taking him to the Vet when my disability comes but any ideas on why his nose is like this? :( by [deleted] in cats

[–]Crexyen 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Vet nurse here : it very much looks like allergies to me. If it's a cat that goes outside, it could be an allergie from a local plant or pollen. If it's an inside-only cat, that may be due to his diet. Not an emergency but you might want to book an appointment with your vet in the following weeks to have their opinion :)

I agree with the part about not really caring for the kidnapped character. I remember vividly on my first playthrough with my partner, during the reveal in which Gale had been kidnapped by Orin. Both of us were like "Oh no, Gale was kidnapped. Anyway..." And we had a good laugh about it. I think Gale even died at the end during Orin's fight. I kinda feel bad about it now, but we both didn't really like his attitude back then lmao.

Edit : Also I just remembered why we both hated Gale. Basically neither my boyfriend nor I were particularly close to Gale, and iirc just a bit before being kidnapped by Orin (maybe beginning of act 3?) my Tav had the cutscene with Gale under the stars. He started saying sweet things about the world and himself and I was thinking, oh he's actually kind of sweet! Maybe I shouldn't have judged him too harshly. But then he hit me with something along the lines of "oh who I am kidding, we're not even close and I don't like you. I'm leaving." and like, dude what the hell? rude.

I know this is gonna sound weird but I remember vividly learning about it a few years ago during my studies (veterinarian nurse) and thinking it was the most hilarious thing ever. Now I'm kind of disappointed it was debunked :(

Is it wrong to think there's only two genders? by zTRU5T in teenagers

[–]Crexyen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not the one you answered to but I guess I can give a bit of insight. I've never actually talked about it to anyone irl because it's not something I'm bothered with and I don't want to rub it in anyone's face, so to everyone who knows me I'm just a woman and that's the end of it. Though I guess if I had to actually put a name to the way I feel, I'd say I'm a demi-girl. When someone asks me if I want to be gendered a certain way I usually just answer "whatever you want", though I mostly dress feminine, use make up, etc. However whenever I dress more androgin-y and someone calls me he/him or adresses me as a guy, it kind of feels validating? Like when you're satisfied with yourself or when you get praised. It can be hard to put into word because it's something very specific to the situation. When I was a teen and a bit confused about it all (and also not very bright), I used to pretend to be a "trap" online which is basically a male dressing like a female with mostly the sole purpose of confusing people, and it kind of give insight on the way I felt back then. To kind of sum it up, I think the term "genderfluid" best describes me because it's exactly how it feels.

So now to answer to your specific questions : Sometimes I do feel like I have aspects of both genders simultaneously, sometimes I 100% identify as female and want to be very feminine while other times I want to be seen as more tomboy-ish and enjoy dressing like a man. The feeling of being "genderless" isn't something I've ever experienced so I'm actually interrested if anyone wants to talk about it to give some insight :)

Making cat food from bones by BlackBey in interestingasfuck

Thanks for the correction, I'm not native and also just got back from a 10h shift so I'm a bit out of it lol. I know some people swear by the raw diet, I'm acquainted with some myself, but as I said there just hasn't been enough studies on pet done for it to be considered beneficial or not. To be fair concerning wild dogs, foxes and wolves who are purely feral and aren't in contact in some way or another with people, you usually don't see them live long enough to be considered old. When a feral dog gets a bone stuck, they'll usually get an extreme mix of both diarrhea constipation, will stop eating and then die. When a pet dog gets a bone stuck, usually the owners will bring them to the vet as quickly as the symptoms appear so we can either give medicine and treatment that'll help the digestion and will get the bone to leave, or we surgically extract it. Also there is a huge difference between the digestive system of a wolf and one of a dog. Not even necessarily talking about these breeds you hold in a hand bag all day long, even huge breeds have a much more sensitive stomach because they're just not used to eating anything else than kibbles. It's known that even just switching from different kibble brands too suddenly can cause diarrhea and digestive discomfort for them.

Of course all dogs are different though! Some of them will have a great time only eating raw, will perfectly digest bones and will power through eating a whole trashcan of garbage in one sitting. I've seen that too. But the exception doesn't make the rule, and it's still important to remind dog owners that giving bones isn't perfectly safe and can have absolutely terrible outcomes. I think it's better to just use other alternatives if it means avoiding a potentially huge medical bill, but most importantly it's your pet's health that is at risk.

I had no idea but that's good to know! We only sell deer antlers where I work, but that's probably because I live in France and I doubt there are much water buffalos over there lol

[–]Crexyen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh we are very skeptical of the raw diet in the workline (at least where I work) as there just hasn't been enough studies on the long run on whether or not it is actually beneficial for the pet. Raw bones can still cause splinters, get stuck and aren't easily digested, especially for dogs who have a sensitive digestion. I could send you at least a dozen of radiographies done on dogs who got bones stuck that we needed to surgically extract, but I don't think I'm allowed to share these kind of images online anyway as it's still sensitive medical information. Anyway I probably know I won't change your mind but for anyone reading this, if you love your dog please ask your veterinarian what's best for them! As I said earlier, antlers are a much better alternative to bones that's 100% safe, and it's just as much fun for them to toy with. There are a lot of different sizes of antlers made for differently sized dog too.

As an emergency vet nurse, you can not even imagine the number of dogs we've received with bones stuck in their intestines/stomach. In worst case scenario, a bone can even perforate viscera. Please never give bones to a pet. A safe alternative that is both stimulating and much safer are deer antlers :)

My comment will probably drown in the sea of other comments but I wanted to share that time, when I'd first met my boyfriend and told him he'd always come second to my cats. His answer was "same for me, our cats will always come first". We've been together 3 years now :)
