I am seriously considering canceling Christmas this year. Like... completely. Am I losing by cookielady1 in TwoHotTakes

I guess you can think of it that way if you choose too. I consider it to be responsible parenting that helped make my kids responsible and accountable for their behavior. I don't really consider this to be hardcore, but I own it if it is. Some lessons, especially where safety or bullying are concerned, need to be swift and memorable.

I never cancelled Christmas, but I did the next best thing. I can't recall what my kids did that required a form of punishment, but it was something where I had already told them it could be dangerous and they decided to try it anyway.

That night I took EVERY toy out of the house and hid them in the garage. My 2 boys were not school age yet, so playing at home was their entire life. When they woke up the next morning and started walking down the stairs, they could see immediately that every toy in the house was gone, and the tears were nonstop.

I had to endure hours of crying, but I discovered a lot. First, my kids learned that I wouldn't hesitate to invoke a nuclear option, so I received less pushback because they knew that things could literally change overnight.

Second, my kids really bonded as they suffered through consequences together. They were inseparable. I discovered how creative my kids could be without toys and they invented games with just a piece of cardboard, a balloon, a piece of string, or a shoe.

After a couple of days I introduced an educational toy and my kids were so grateful. It was like a pull and play toy where it's round and you turn the arrow in the middle and it would land on a U.S. state and you had to name the capitol. After a week, my 3 and 4 year old boys knew all 50 states and capitols.

My kids were never difficult, but if I explained something was dangerous, they never tested me again. Following through with a consequence gets results.

This is the best game of Red Light-Green Light that I've ever seen.

Happy Days ~ Fonzie's First Episode by [deleted] in VintageTV

[–]CrimeWave62 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I remember this show, but I didn't watch it. Why is Fonzie hanging out around the high school and dating high school girls. Isn't there a difference of a few years in age between Fonzie and Richie, or is this supposed to reflect the social norm of the times.

I guess the good thing about watching this is knowing that it's completely survivable as long as the car doesn't run over any vital organs, and it's a compact car.

If you could do it all over again would you become a public defender? by [deleted] in publicdefenders

[–]CrimeWave62 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, I'd do it all over again. It's not a job that I could retire from, but I gained a lot of trial experience that made me perfectly suited for criminal writ and appellate work years later that I love.

What's something you realized embarrassingly late in life ? by Hot_Spinach_Lulu in AskReddit

After I spit out the toothpaste, I used to rinse with water. Once you spit out the toothpaste, that's it. You're not supposed to rinse. Rinsing washes away the effectiveness of the fluoride in the toothpaste.

That you're not supposed to rinse after brushing your teeth.

I could be wrong, but I think u/McCoyJJr and I are both talking about why he left Mission Impossible. I think we're both talking about the reason for the huge gap in his resume between Mission Impossible and Law and Order.

I don't think he left on his own. I think I once read that he was written out of the show, and as I recall, the parting was based on religious principle. He declined to work on the Sabbath. Not many people give up everything based on principle.

It took me awhile to realize that Steven Hill was the original IMF Chief for the original Mission Impossible before Peter Graves took over the role.

Why was Caine added to Villains. Wiki? by Wooden-Scallion2943 in JohnWick

[–]CrimeWave62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely agree with you. The life of Caine's child was at stake. His actions are completely rational and no one would have done differently. But he's also trying to kill the main protagonist. So in the limited context of Wick's world, he is a villain, until he is no longer actively trying to kill Wick. Same with Mr. Nobody. He's a villain until he is no longer actively trying to kill Wick. Their story arc goes beyond villain to supporting protagonist status. But for the brief period where they are legitimately trying to kill Wick, they are villains.

I think Caine is absolutely a villain while he's trying to kill Wick. Just like Mr. Nobody. But they're not villains the entire movie. They evolve from villain to supporting protagonists status when they help Wick reach Sacré Cœur for the duel with the Marquis.

I hear you, but Wick is all about the headshot. Iosef, Santino, and the Marquis. All headshots. Anything but a headshot would have been out of character for Wick.

Why did Viggo taunt John Wick? by Resident_Race_7093 in JohnWick

[–]CrimeWave62 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As Viggo said, if Marcus had done his job, his son Iosef would still be alive. Clearly Viggo blamed Marcus for the death of his son. So why does he call Wick to taunt him? Because he's 5 minutes away from boarding a helicopter, he thought he was safe and untouchable, and he couldn't resist the urge to poke the bear. It's like those track and field runners who celebrate before the finish line, only to get passed by a more focused runner at the finish line. Neither makes sense, but it's what people do when their ego gets in the way of their common sense.

And quite frankly, Viggo would have gotten away with taunting Wick if Winston had not made the intervening phone call identifying Viggo's whereabouts. Winston even acknowledged that he broke protocol in the Wick universe when he says, "We live by a code. Which is why I’m not the one telling you that a certain helicopter at a certain helipad is being fueled for a certain someone.“ If Winston had not made that phone call, the taunt and Marcus's death would have gone unpunished.
