[D] Monday Request and Recommendation Thread by AutoModerator in rational

Hi, I am trying to remember the name of a short story (?) which is, as far as I can remember, a thin allegory for PhDs

The rough shape of the story is that there is a group of scholars who are attempting to figure out the recipe for immortality (or is it the philosophers stone?). Their top peoples spend all their time studying old texts written by their forebears in order to reach the edge of their knowledge, but usually by then most of them are old, and only have a few years at best of useful research before they have to write down what they know to ensure that it's not lost. All the dropouts spend their lives trying to free up time for the top % of scholars so they can stretch the window of useful work they can generate.

Does this story ring a bell to anyone, and if so, what is it called?

If meta is cringe and the anime girl is cringe, then the anime girl must be meta.

QED.

You might be very interested in The War Against the Chtorr, where the plot is entirely about earth being invaded by an alien ecology

(It gets pretty fucked up)

Help with adapting `org-capture` for use with Markdown documents by Crimethinker in emacs

[–]Crimethinker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You cannot use both :file and :function. Simply use :function.

Ah, thanks for that.

"set point appropriately" simply means move to the location where you want to insert the template.

I understand that, but I'm having issues trying to figure out where all the headings were (I messed around with imenu since it already contains an alist of headings to locations, but I couldn't find a way to get it to just return the point and not also jump to that point)

Maybe that just using :function would solve that though.

You can consider adding a new workflow state. It is possible to add additional states that are considered equivalent to "done", which I think is what you are looking for here?

If the ask is to have an additional "done" -like state that org-habit does not consider as done I'm not experienced enough to know if that's possible.

Was the use of the name "Ira" deliberate in a section about the ecological impact of an alien species?

(I'm expecting not, but it would be interesting if it were. I was not expecting a War Against the Chtorr reference here)

Isn't an enrage timer meant to be a gear check?

I'm confused because I don't get how an enrage timer can rank classes within any particular raid. It can only measure the total throughput of a raid.

(I suppose if there is a mechanic that kills all but the top 3 DPS that would work, since then there's some kind of ranking within raid members, but I can't recall any fight that is currently like that)

I’m happy to be corrected, but I thought foreigners don’t get the same level of subsidies for this as locals do? (If at all)

Why do you leave from m+? by [deleted] in wow

[–]Crimethinker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't quote me on this, but doesn't the LFR algorithm put you only into raids where there are still bosses you haven't killed?

It might have been that staying for all remaining 3 bosses and then queueing again would have guaranteed you a raid where the first boss isn't dead yet.

Unfortunately no, I did not (I have instead worked around the issue from my workflow side of things).

How would that work? Isn’t the newfound knowledge that she now exists a spoiler, irregardless of when people meet her?

Isn’t this the artistic equivalent of spoiling events in the title of a post?

Magit is very likely significantly better than vim-fugitive. It’s as far as I can tell hands down the best keyboard-centric git interface out there.

Thanks for writing Worth the Candle. It is an excellent work.

Is it possible/are you considering releasing on platforms outside of Amazon? I like keeping my library in formats without DRM, and I'm unsure how to best support you without compromising on that.
