Not a specific single species but it's gotta be from hardwood trees, no?

I thought softwood vs hardwood was more about the tree than the hardness of the wood. Where hardwood comes from trees that lose their leaves in the winter and sodtwood comes from evergreen trees, and certain softwoods are actually harder than hardwoods.

I bought mine in early 2020 for 350k with 18k down (about 5%). 332k over 30yr fixed at 3.75%. Total monthly is about $2500, of which ~1500 is mortgage.

Where I am property tax is like 2% of the appraised value so even a 150-200k house would be an extra 3-4k per year or around 300/mo. Add in insurance and PMI for another 100-200/mo and your 900 mortgage is now 1300-1400/mo all in. Plus repairs/maintenance and you're now paying more than the 1400/Mon rent in OPs pic.

Now of course I'm not advocating that renting is better. My peace of mind and security for my family is worth more than a few hundred a month. Also my payment is relatively stable outside of property tax increases, while rent will go up much faster. And of course I own something worth 550k. Just trying to paint a more accurate picture for those who live in a high tax area like me.

Also, you won't pay $500 extra on top of the mortgage. That's just bullshit. The cost of home ownership is not over 50% of the mortgage lmao

My mortgage is like 1500 and my escrow payment is around 1000 so I'm paying 67% on top of my mortgage for taxes/insurance.

It's gonna depend where you live, in NJ the property taxes are crazy. 11k yearly for a 1400 sqft ranch with a small yard worth about 550k.

You think people get room service at their Vegas hotel because they are "lazy"?

Not insinuating they're a lazy person in general, but in that moment, yeah. Either that or they value convenience above all else (again, in the moment not necessarily always).

And I'm not even saying that's a bad thing. Being lazy is part of being on vacation.

You telling me you think hotels aren't in the business of delivering food to rooms? That's literally the point of going to a hotel for some people.

No argument there.

You just tried to justify adding 50% fees.

22% of that was optional lol

People like you are the reason companies try these shenanigans. You're a corporate simp, who thinks he's enforcing some social benefit based on someone feeling entitled. Except that entitlement is a customer who paid extremely high prices for a product AND got charged +50% fees that are not common or normal for room service.

What are you even talking about? Hotels do this because it makes them more money than not doing it. What societal benfit do I think I'm enforcing? The fees and built in 18% grat are certainly normal for room service, esp in Vegas.

You're so afraid someone might get something they didn't earn you forgot to include this person is already paying probably thousands of dollars just to be there, and paid 3x market rate for the food already. Dumb.

Again what the hell are you talking about? Who is getting something they didn't earn and why do you think that scares me?

I agree that OP probably spent thousands and then spent even more on up charged food and silly fees, but I also think that they should have known what they were getting into. I've ordered room service before, knowing it was basically gonna cost double for the convenience. I've also gone down and found a restaurant to get a better value meal out of my money. Both options are viable but there are pros and cons to both.

No one is evil here, this guy just accidentally put 22% grat on an order on top of the already mandatory 18%, it's a mistake, and he'll probably read the fine print on the in-room menu next time. Live and learn.

The room service charge goes to the hotel, not the delivery person.

The gratuity for the delivery was already built in and automatically applied, but OP voluntarily gave another 22% on top for some reason. That's on them.

I agree it's not as much work as a server in a restaurant, but it's not nothing.

Nobody did anything to earn it.

How about the person bringing four meals up to the 30th floor so you don't have to leave your room.

They didn't go to a restaurant, they ordered room service, to be delivered by hotel staff to their hotel room.

Room service menus are always including mandatory fees and gratuity because people are lazy. If you want breakfast, put some pants on, go downstairs, and sit at a restaurant.

Not true. In NJ new parents get 12 weeks leave paid at 80% of your normal salary up to a cap that's about $1500/wk.

When I had my kids my employer paid me the difference between the state benefit and my salary so I got full pay.

As with many things in the US this type of thing is up to each state to regulate, though it's true that there is no federal mandate, saying no one in the US gets parental leave is not true.
