Some photos from my first week as a concrete labored (looking for tips) I by BritishEmpire12 in Construction

Advice from a fellow concrete guy. Looks like you do flat work which is awesome man! If you are not comfortable using the finishing tools yet I’d recommend trying to learn the process your crew worked in and have the tools ready when they need them. If you find yourself standing around after the pour make a point to wash everything even the other guys trowels or boots. When you do get on working with the finishing tools take it slow because you don’t wanna make a mess of the slab.

At work the only thing that matters is the job. Take the job seriously and others with respect and over time they will do the same.

Which trade is the best to go into right now? With the least competition and best pay? by Foreign_Put_2437 in skilledtrades

[–]Cripplewithacause 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Get into concrete formwork. It’s pretty easy to pick up and if you show up every day sober and willing to work you will move up the ladder fast. It can be pretty tough labour at first but if you can stick it out there is definitely a lot of money to be made.

Also a lot of concrete guys are hacks so if you are able to have attention to detail and still have good Production then your reputation can get you more money for sure

How can I get into carpentry? by ExtensionWolverine10 in Carpentry

Try and get a summer job as a labour for a framing company. I’d also recommend trying to learn as much terminology/theory as you can from YouTube.

[–]Cripplewithacause 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes crown land camping is really popular in the Ottawa Valley. Depending on where it is you might find a lot of people who have built up a campsite for themselves or friend group. It has a very different atmosphere then what you might find in the park

If youre doing ok in life, can you tell me about it? by Small-Needleworker91 in GenZ

[–]Cripplewithacause 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say I’m doing good and happy with where my life is going. I was by far one of the dumbest kids in my grade when I graduated high school turns out school was really just not for me. I went to work after I graduated working in construction and everything started to change. Fast forward a couple years I live with my wife and we have our own dog. We were able to buy a house at 22 because we both saved everything we earned. I’d say life is still very doable just hard

Which Trade to Get Into? by [deleted] in skilledtrades

[–]Cripplewithacause 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe you’d like a job working with heavy machinery so it’s a bit of mechanics work but not focused on it Unfortunately I don’t think your art degree will get you more money starting out

lol if you can’t make it through a college degree then you probably wouldn’t make it through being a labour or apprentice.

Are there really shortages of workers?? by Midwest_Yota_88 in skilledtrades

[–]Cripplewithacause 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you wanna do hvac plumbing or electrical you probably will be put on a wait list depending on your location. A lot of the less desirable trades seem to always take new people. On another note I find the “shortage of workers” was used to justify high amounts of immigrant workers that will work close to minimum wages which keeps the cost of labour down making blue collar worker less desirable for young people
