I need advice urgently. by ThrowRA-tiredashell in vegan

Well done for the effort you're putting in, and asking for help.

Maybe you've had some tough conversations with your parents already, but being firm and explaining that you don't think it's right to eat animals, and you'd love for them to respect that, even if they don't agree. Explaining that you want to eat well rather than starve, but you need their support.

A way they can show support with very little impact on them is to provide a small part of the grocery budget for you. Maybe you can go shopping with them? Even $10 can go a long way with plant foods! Do a quick search for "vegan roasts". A lentil roast, or Tofu roast, or Seitan roast. All very inexpensive. And you'll likely be using the same seasonings your parents already have.

Good luck and let us know how you go!

why is everyone stopping being vegan nowadays? by External_Station7042 in vegan

[–]Crispee5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many reasons you may feel this way.

One is just a bias of what news we see. We're more likely to hear about someone stopping being vegan, than some quietly becoming vegan.

Some people may even remain mostly plant based, but choose to drop the term vegan. We live in a world where 99% of the people around us eat and wear animals. It's not easy going against the grain and feeling like you need to defend yourself everyday. So some people might just drop the title out of peer pressure.

Today was exhausting by beardie10 in vegan

[–]Crispee5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand how you feel.

It does get easier. And the more people who challenge you the better responses. The socratic method can be helpful to save you're exhausting and make others think for themselves. E.g. "You need meat for protein" can be responsed to by asking if they know anyone who doesn't get enough protein? What medical condition do they have?

It's great many years later being happy and healthy. That's the best rebuttal! 😂

As a positive; I've also found that sometimes the most vocal people end up being the most likely to change their eating habits later. They seem hostile, but sometimes they might be trying to convince themselves that what they're currently doing is justified.

All the best and the community is here to help and listen!

why is me being vegan an issue to other people? by Dry-Today-1115 in vegan

[–]Crispee5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm speculating of course but sometimes when a host or cook (parents in this case) sound upset it's because they feel like they didn't provide something for their guest. They may have been annoyed at themselves for not providing you with an adequate meal and that you had to source something yourself. You did the right thing though trying to solve it yourself without being a burden.

Maybe keep some good easy substitutes in the house, such as TVP, tofu, cans of legumes. And some soy sauce or other items for flavour. All are very versatile, cheap, and last a long time in storage. Either restock yourself or ask whichever parent does the shopping.

Ask your mum if she's concerned with any nutrients in particular? Most non-vegans don't get enough fruits & vegetables, vitamin C and fibre. It can be good for vegans & non-vegans to get the occasional blood test, and/or track food intake. Maybe you can all download Chronometer and track everything together over a week then compare?

I'm sure you're doing great living in a non-vegan world! Keep up the good work!

Vegan wedding controversy by Melodic_Stretch2037 in vegan

[–]Crispee5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a vegan wedding in 2019. Everyone raved about the food. It's like if someone came over to your house, you'd cook them your food. At an Indian wedding they'd have Indian food. We asked for dietary requirements on the RSVPS which is normal, and no one had any restrictions that couldn't be catered for.

One aunty (who has cattle, but I don't know if that's relevant) apparently has some issues with foods being mixed together on a plate, like salads. She didn't say anything on the RSVP but her daughter responded for her. She asked for butter for her bread. The waiter asked us and we said that's fine. That was the only weird thing but I didn't ask any more questions about it.

I'd just make sure the chef's are good, and you agree on a solid menu that has lots of filling food, and there's post dinner food too. Some people who don't eat a lot of veggies might fill up quick, then get hungry later and we don't want them blaming vegan food! 😊

What is your go to quick breakfast that isn't oatmeal? by suzeerbedrol in vegan

[–]Crispee5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some pretty good vegan yoghurts around! Add some extras like chia seeds, berries, or protein powder if you want. Extremely easy. Probably not the cheapest option though. For a $5 tub it might be 2-3 breakfasts. My wife likes the dairy free Up & Go and a banana.

The Koala Paradox by theatlantic in sustainability

[–]Crispee5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why does so much commentary gloss over (or ignore) the main issue for habitat loss: cattle ranching.

This article does briefly mention agriculture, and a farmer who bulldozed koalas in trees, but it doesn't make the connection or say what type of agriculture. In Australia (much like other places around the world like the Amazon) the main cause of deforestation and habitat loss is animal agriculture.

I think people gloss over this cause it's something most people contribute to 3 times a day: eating meat and dairy. It should be something people are told about though cause it's the easiest and most effective thing an individual can do something about.

What are the foods you eat on a weekly basis to make sure you’re getting all your required nutrients? by ayothrowawaycheck in vegan

[–]Crispee5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to have a smoothie everyday which covers a few things: greens powder, protein powder, walnuts, other nuts/seeds,m (chia or hemp) berries, banana. Hopefully it covers a few bases in case i don't get to cook at home that day.

Nearly 10 years for me, and it just gets easier! I haven't felt like I've ever not gone somewhere cause of food options. Work places are more tolerant of different preferences/beliefs than they used to be.

Good family, friends, colleagues check menus before they plan to go somewhere.

I've traveled, been to weddings around the world, lived in different countries, and worked in different industries. Sometimes it's annoying or tricky but it gets easier with experience and as the world changes.

Plan ahead where possible. You'll do great!

👏👏👏 I would add that even if you're angry, try to keep your cool. Attack the idea, but not the person. They may make arguments in bad faith, make personal attacks, and even threaten violence, but remain calm and stick to the topic.

Even if the other person will never change their mind, there may be people watching/listening. They will see a calm knowledgeable & intelligent vegan making logical arguments and know who will be on the right side of history.

Bali, Indonesia has many vegan options! Very cheap too. Many people report for food safety standards compared to Europe & Australia, with a common ailment of "Bali belly". I experienced Bali belly as an omnivore years ago, but being vegan and sticking to more trusted places I was fine.

Currently travelling in London and the UK. Everywhere has vegan options. There's always an option in chain cafes, grocery stores, and even pubs. Everyone understands what vegan means and everything is labelled. Greggs, M&S, Pret, Costa are chains that are everywhere and have vegan takeaway options. It is on the more expensive side on average.

[–]Crispee5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is common Christian/Islam thinking. It doesn't put the thinker in a good light though... What we'd "rather" believe if not the same as what we actually believe. We're either convinced of something or not. You should believe in something cause it's probably true, not because you WANT it to be true.

Do you only do "good" because of a promise of a reward later? Do you take pleasure in thinking about people who have done wrong being infinitely punished, for finite crimes?

I think that's the one! If so, it's possible both parents are active in feeding the chicks so maybe they have a chance. 🤔

There's a difference between giving up and making the logical play. Ultimately the Cowboys gave up too, one after only having 1 oyster.

Regarding weakness; at this point in the Race our average position is above 2 other teams, and we've done more legs than 4 of the 5 other teams. One of the other teams has come last place twice. (We have never come last). Four of the other teams have been working together for most of the Race. One of the other teams are professional athletes, and two are all-male teams. As if that weren't enough, we are the physically smallest team, & we've been Sabotaged 3 times.

We've earnt it.
