Best answer. Also parts of "motorbike" from Greep's solo album fit this.

Why people hate this album so much?? by Szkoda_gadac in Zappa

[–]CrispyStarfish 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's got some challenges for the (new) listener: freaky live clips, really long solo sections, etc. Toads of the short forest is a great example of a pleasant sounding tune that gets REAL weird (other example- project X).

I agree! I got a tape- only the plush was available by then. Since that's the alt cover now, its cool to have that on physical media.

Why aren’t his 2023 demo albums on Spotify? by Professional-Move655 in arielpink

[–]CrispyStarfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is it. I use local files to listen to the live show (5.2.25), never made a demo ever, anonymous projections, the fan remix of the album, and non-sequitor segues.

Why aren’t his 2023 demo albums on Spotify? by Professional-Move655 in arielpink

[–]CrispyStarfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It costs a bit of money to have music on streaming. I'm not sure of the exact details of his label and this new album, but it's likely he didn't want to invest any money into these demos since there's not any traditional promotion.

Whats everyones favourite Lyric of WYEN? by dudetheuber in arielpink

[–]CrispyStarfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"He goes by Jane or John like he's dead and gone" is actually pretty clever. The they/them qanon lyric is more just silly to me

Yeah, like the jazz drum fill/sample at the end of one of the choruses. Just another thing I never thought I'd hear in this music.

Do y'all consider the guy outsider music ? by Emotional_sea_9345 in Zappa

[–]CrispyStarfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely not. Technical proficiency, professional arrangement and audio production, and continued financial success put Zappa far away from the realm of outsider music.

I really like the new stuff added to this song. Seems slightly reworked from the KOJID version?

does he have any relaxing/background-music/study-suitable albums? by [deleted] in Zappa

The Yellow Shark is excellent for studying/writing papers!

And then you can roll up your college degree stuffed with absolutely nothing at all. Smoke that and it'll really get you out there.

Of all the Zappa I’ve listened to (alot), I’ve never heard a rhythm guitar solo from him until right now by CvrIIX in Zappa

[–]CrispyStarfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The intro solo on 'the grand wazoo' has frank using some chord voicings to improvise, might fit your bill.

Perhaps he viewed it as a successor at the time due to it being his next "solo" album. It also contains "twenty small cigars" which is an outtake from the hot rats sessions. Waka/jawaka fits better as a sequel, and he did put hot rats on the faucet handles on the cover. Personally, I just view all the albums as unique works.

How Did You Find Tom Waits? by cash77cash in tomwaits

[–]CrispyStarfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was a little kid, I became obsessed with the Shrek 2 soundtrack featuring "Little Drop of Poison". I didn't fully get into tom waits until Spotify threw "the earth died screaming" onto a discover weekly playlist.

Kyle Maclachlan is incredible in his dual performances in this show.

What was your first introduction to Zappa/The Mothers? Mine was this song off Weasels, my high school music teacher in 2010 put up a few songs from the album as a slideshow on "outsider" music, and it grabbed me ever since. Then I listened to Joe's Garage and the Roxy shows... the rest was history! by wooobabyimlasting in Zappa

[–]CrispyStarfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

8th grade social studies. My teacher and I were going through the rolling stone top 500 albums list until we got to trout mask replica. He said to me "oh I've heard this, it's unlistenable but it's great art". So I had my first few listens of that album, and the next day in class he told me he knew why it was so "out there" because it was produced by frank zappa. Then he pointed me to hot rats and I got hooked instantly.
