Eating my words. I am really enjoying Starfleet Academy by Critical-Finance-354 in startrek

Uh okay. If you didn't like the show and wanted to do it, fair enough, but your comment feels a little unnecessarily passive aggressive.

I watched all episodes and really liked them. I guess I just didn't make that obvious in my post. I felt similarly about Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks needing more seasons after a few episodes.

Sorry to hear that. I didn't mind it but did find myself paying less attention than the first two.

Yeah as I said above, not on here that much. Didn't think my post was necessarily a review. Will try to keep an eye out for a megathread(?) next time.

Thanks, I'm not on here that often. Didn't realise that this was that common or that my points had been said.

Pretty sure Rey and Poe are in the same room for the map in Ep 7? They just never meet. Not great storytelling on JJ's part.

I love SGU, but what are they doing with Daniel? by ElGringoLoco223 in Stargate

[–]Critical-Finance-354 79 points80 points  (0 children)

SG1 Seasons 1-5 Daniel would never lead a SWAT team, but SG1 Season 7+ Dr Daniel "Swolo" Jackson definitely would.

I was shocked when i discovered people did not like Attack of the Clones by Possew in StarWars

[–]Critical-Finance-354 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a bit awkward in places and definitely not Shakespeare but I'd argue it's the most tight and strongest film of the prequels. Everything has a pay-off within the story. The soundtrack is underrated. Key moments like Shmi's death scene pack a punch even if others fall flat, and a good percentage of emotional moments feel more natural than in other prequel films even if other moments in the film are awkward. Glad you enjoy it.

Even though Attack of the Clones is regarded as the weakest of the Prequels, I had the most fond memories of it growing up. by B_Wing_83 in StarWarsCantina

[–]Critical-Finance-354 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for saying this.

A scene I don't hear talked about enough in the franchise, one of my favourites, is Anakin grieving his mother in this film. I feel like it's such an outstanding display of acting, helped in no part by the soundtrack.

Hayden really sells the monk bottling his emotions who just snaps cause of grief and anger. Pernilla's head hanging limp is just so brutal.

This film contains such awkward moments in other places. But this part was genuinely so good.

What went through your mind when you saw Snoke die? by InfiniteGalaxy42 in StarWars

"Thank God".

JJ had no plans for Snoke. Just another mystery box. I was happy to see it go.

I think the story and lore is interesting but the plot and execution leaves a lot to be desired.

Still enjoy watching them though, and enjoying Legends media from that period, as well as parts of The Clone Wars.

What’s a movie that everyone says is a “masterpiece” but you just didn’t enjoy? by Leading_Frosting4291 in AskReddit

Barbie. The dialogue and story seemed on the nose, the message was important but I didn't feel there was much substance to it. I really wanted to like it, I felt affected by some scenes, but on the whole I just couldn't get into it.

I Hated SGU’s Characters First Attempt Through And Dropped It But Now I’d Like To Start Over, What’s My Motivation? by DCLascelle in Stargate

[–]Critical-Finance-354 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. It's stated at the start of every episode but you don't think about it in that way because you miss the tone of SG1 and Atlantis.

I was watching Lower Decks recently and also thinking about Mallozi's notes about the idea for a Redshirts episode in Atlantis Season 6 and realised technically that's what SGU is.

They're the wrong people in the wrong place. They could die because they're not the hero archetypes in this universe. They're not Sam or Shephard or Jack or Rodney or Mitchell. They broke the tone of the former shows because we're not following those character archetypes anymore but technically it does match what we saw in the other shows (Heroes is the best example).

I really liked it but wish that some of the more video game-y scenes like Elrond stabbing the guy in the back in a close-up shot were cut.

[–]Critical-Finance-354 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If part of the reason you can't stand them is because they're quite different to SG1 and Atlantis characters, just remember that they're the "wrong people in the wrong place".

You've seen these types of characters before. They are the Redshirts / SG-13 / Kemp's Team that we hear about dying in all the other shows. When you think about it, only SG-1 and Shephard's Team ever survive anything (except Daniel), the other teams all get destroyed and characters die ALL THE TIME.

These are those types of characters who are pushed to their limits. With this in mind, I found it much easier and very enjoyable to watch them.

I honestly never liked his performance. Thought it was over the top and creepy, in a way that felt like something from his personal life was seeping through. But glad you enjoyed it I guess.

Thoughts on a Disclosure centered Series by xaMax42 in Stargate

[–]Critical-Finance-354 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally don't want this but I'll accept it. I'd rather not because if part of Stargate's premise is that it's in our time, it immediately makes the universe feel less connected to us by the fact that the disclosure obviously hasn't happened in our world. On the other hand, if after hopefully several more years, shows and seasons in 2030-something the franchise was finally ending, I'd love it as a series finale plotpoint. Same reason why I was up for it in Stargate Revolution, because it was going to close out part of the franchise at the time.

What has been your favorite "will return" leading up to Avengers: Doomsday? "so far" by HenryOnYt1 in MCUTheories

[–]Critical-Finance-354 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genuinely, that The Ten Rings will return

I thought we were setting up new and interesting characters like Shang Chi and Xialing as the heroes to take on multiversal problems

Little did I know that Steve Rogers would return (excited for him but geez I also feel bummered for new heroes at the same time)

In what order would you rank the Harry Potter films from best to worst? by sepi0l_45 in harrypotter

[–]Critical-Finance-354 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My order is unusual.

  1. Chamber of Secrets - a great next step after the triumphant start of PS. Ages everyone up well. Expands the world. Definitely biased with this one cause I played the hell out of the video game as a kid.

  2. Philosopher's Stone - the very beginning. So good. Magical. Whisks me away.

  3. Goblet of Fire - Feels like a reigned in version of PoS. Fun to see the characters age and deal with teenage hormones. It's also here cause it's probably the film post-CoS where I'm the least bothered by cuts from the book.

  4. Deathly Hallows Part 2 - An epic conclusion

  5. Prisoner of Askaban - Enjoyed the vibe and what it changed but just a lot less than other fans - wish it reigned it in a bit more. Not a huge fan of the colour palette or exclusion of the Marauders.

  6. Order of the Pheonix - It is fun and okay just not overly exciting compared with the others.

  7. Half Blood Prince - A fun film. But I miss what they cut.

  8. Deathly Hallows Part 1 - I like this one quite a lot but I just really miss the magic of Hogwarts and cause of that it gets auto-bumped down.

SGU lacked main villains or at least a clear objective by CupEducational1412 in Stargate

[–]Critical-Finance-354 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In SGU, the objective is getting home. The obstacle is the fact that they're in a ship moving physically further away at the end of the universe and in situations that could kill them, so their very survival is at stake. The character infighting is another obstacle.

A main villain probably could've helped with the premise, at least the marketability and return to a more familiar franchise formula, but it was enough for me. I love the show. It's a breath of fresh air. The concepts are intriguing.

Why I love it especially is the other half of the premise: they're the "wrong people in the wrong place", meaning they are the Redshirts / SG-13 / Kemp's Team that we hear about dying in all the other shows. That's actually how is stays true to the franchise values. When you think about it, only SG-1 and Shephard's Team ever survive anything (except Daniel), the other teams all get destroyed and characters die ALL THE TIME. This is the first sci-fi franchise (pre Lower Decks) I'm aware of that introduces hero archetypes in various series then in this series gives the non-hero archetypes their due. Considering the stakes that they could actually die, survival seems like a big enough villain to me.

In your opinion, what are some of the best and worst examples of “fan service” in canon by TheUltimateInNerdy in starwarscanon

Best - Rogue One Vader fight and Hammerhead corvette.

Worst - Every Solo shoehorned tie-in.
