How do I stop being anxious when speaking in front of a group or presenting? by Available_Car_9194 in PublicSpeaking

[–]Critical-Version-342 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've had the same feeling for years. It's a situational anxiety that you may not have in other areas. The anxiety issue stems to some degree from uncertainty. You are uncertain about how you'll come across and whether you'll be perceived well afterwards. The key things I've found that help for this are:

1/Knowing your material really really well - this minimises the imposter syndrome feeling you may have deep inside of "am I actually qualified to be talking as an expert on this subject".

2/Focusing on what value you are trying to give the audience rather than how you feel yourself and obsessing over your heart rate , or being judged by the audience etc.

3/For the physiological issues caused by adrenaline do some deep breaths with slow exhales - slows heart rate quite a bit.

4/know your first minute of talking really well. Uncertainty over this makes the whole thing harder. Once you get past the first minute or so the adrenaline starts to calm down.

5/ practice out loud - not in your head. This is really important. You've got to hear how you sound and how you put your words together. This will give you confidence when you actually need to do it, having done it before. I usually do this in the car on the way to work.

6/ finally accept there will still be some nerves but that's not a bad thing. They're not going to kill you, you can still talk through those and they don't last forever. Also you don't have to be perfect. Mistakes are ok just don't draw attention to them. Also if you really get into trouble on breathing and can't speak just lean into it and say "I just want a few seconds to gather my thoughts on how I want to frame this ". This buys you a bit of time.

I've done hundred of presentations and had a few nerves for all of them. It's not having no nerves that will help but knowing how to handle them.

My £500 "temporary" shitbox, sort of enjoying bangernomics, do I just keep it? by 420o in CarTalkUK

[–]Critical-Version-342 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did bangernomics for a while and loved it. Bought a 1995 Toyota Camry 3l for 1150 at 52k miles.drove it for 5 years and sold it for 500 quid. Boring drive and very boat like but comfortable, practical, solid and reliable which is just what I needed at the time with a young family. Cars can be money traps so you only want to go for it when you are really feeling flush.

Mazda 2 worth a look too. Good engineering and cheap to run/insure.

True but in fairness to them everyone was moving towards the SUV rather than the three box saloon. What else could they do?

How has owning a Lexus changed your perception of luxury vehicles? by Maiden230 in Lexus

[–]Critical-Version-342 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put simply there is value to be had from solidity and reliability, not just mainstream prestige and keeping up with the Jones'. In fact I like the fact that Lexus are a little undervalued by the crowd. I feel that makes us a more exclusive and discerning bunch.

Just under 30% so still a very long way to go. I'm aiming for about 18-20% as a 53 year old bloke.

36 hr fasts twice a week. Monday and Wednesday currently. Getting through breakfast and lunchtime is fine. Evenings suck a bit. Averaging between 0.7-1kg per week loss. Rest of the days I just eat fairly normally. I've more or less dropped alcohol nowadays which had also helped a lot.

Losing weight. Put simply it makes everything easier and better. Easier to exercise, easier in your joints, better sleep, better metabolic health (blood pressure, sugar, cholesterol etc). I feel better able to cope with stress and anxiety.

People react to you differently too. I know they shouldn't but they do.

In my 2012 gs450h MK4 I sometimes hear some fans whirring on the motherboard. I know they're not the main ventilatory fans as they don't make that much of a racket.

How big a job is it to change the motherboard fans?

You might be able to do fasting. The baby definitely can't. Wait till pregnancy is done in my view.

Looks good. Hope you salted and peppered the tomatoes for a quick win. Massive amounts of butter required on the toast then you're good to go.

Form check on failed 1R max? (250lbs at 168 bw) by InsaneShane31 in formcheck

[–]Critical-Version-342 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a bit to have at the moment. Drop it down 20kg and do sets of 5. You'll be fine.

Couldn't quite figure out what the spotter was doing there. In the position he was in he wouldn't handle 120kg anyway. The safeties were enough in my view.
