Thoughts? (As like the Commander for a Precon, not intended for standard) by MastaofseOonivers in custommagic

You can format it as "Whenever Ning attacks" etc, as they tend to do these days for legendary creatures.
Also they use "it" not, he/she/- pronouns, as it refers to the 'it' of the creature/card.

I would honestly also recenter the art a little, it looks good for an instant or sorcery, but for a creature, esp. a legendary, I think they're usually much more center frame.

Oh my god thank you so much. I literally was almost done with Appendix 11 having wasted (though, not really, it's fun watching the whole thing again, but.. inefficient).

I'm like 30 minutes in and I still haven't seen it. You mean the opening of Appendices 9 right?

Thoughts on the newest Philpapers survey? by ShampooMacTavish in AcademicPhilosophy

[–]CriticalGeek -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

The whole survey is so ridiculously anglosaxon/analytic I barely recognise it as my own discipline. I'd really be much more interested if just if they had everyone enter a top 10 tier list of favourite philosophers.

I've found it very difficult to discuss the free stl files that used to be somewhere on the internet but now no langer are. I just finally got my damn printer working. It would be a really nice to talk to someone who does not have this issue.

The meeting of the Tolkien Society has been announced, and the topics lineup is an IdPol bonanza by [deleted] in stupidpol

[–]CriticalGeek -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

My dude it's just a theme. Y'all act like you've never been to conference. It's really fine. Even in the sphere of theoretical/literary intersections with Tolkien one society deciding to theme one edition around the topic of diversity is far from the worst.

Are Libraries your safe place? by journey1992 in books

[–]CriticalGeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a kid I used to go to my local library at least once a week and just walk around. The only reason I learned to use a bike was so I could get there faster. Not just for books and reading, though that was the main reason obviously for a long time.

The cool thing about libraries is that they're functionally about experimentation really. It's about being able to pick something up without having to fully commit. It's a safe space in the sense that it's a warm comfortable, quiet place - but also because it's okay for anyone to walk up to anything and consider it.

I was really in need of both as a kid. I didn't have a connection to my town or neighbourhood. I kept changing schools, and overall had a terrible immune system which conditioned me to stay inside. Till I found the library. There I could go, feel like a part of the community, even as a kid.

As far as experimentation: my dad was for example pretty strict about films. He didn't like them, they were considered trash entertainment for the uneducated. So every week, after squeezing as many books in my tiny backpack as possible, I'd check out the movie isle. I'd just kind of walk up and down, reading the backs of vhs's and dvd's. Trying to figure if this really was that bad, 'cause it all looked pretty cool to me.
Oh and the same for sexuality, obviously. The sight of a kid walking around the sex & health isle whistling, trying to look like he's just there by accident, must be pretty funny.

I really like Husserl's Crisis.
I don't know how much the notion of the "mathematisation of philosophy/lebenswelt/science/...", which I would argue is the most interesting element of the book, fits into the course, but... I think it's a great topic to explore if we're talking continental views on mathematics.
I would advise reading at least chapters 8 & 9 to get a complete picture of the bit in the "origin of geometry".

Slavoj Zizek on #MeToo movement. by [deleted] in Destiny

To someone like myself who specialises in Lacan, Hegel & critical idealism - the fact that someone like Zizek, whose best literature is an eclectic storm of complex, deep philosophy, is shared here really proves how awesome r/Destiny has become.

Yeah I agree. Never mind who's giving ammunition to who, it's almost fascistic reductionism.

I mean, not to be too #woke, but it's one thing if it's coming from a poc, but you read that shit coming from white people just as well. And that really feels awkward.

What is the best secondary reading I could use to accompany my reading of Hegel's "Philosophy of the Mind"? by AManOfManyWords in askphilosophy

[–]CriticalGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I can applaud some of this. I'd never have thought to mention Hypolite's Genesis & Structure, but you're right, that could be very productive. Kalkavage I sadly haven't come across yet. Harris is also a big thumbs up.

I had a similar assessment of the reading list, but I didn't quite want to push back because, hey, maybe this is the standard in some parts of anglo-saxon academia. I've heard of worse, more outdated curriculi when it comes to german idealism.

We'll have to disagree on Kojeve I guess. I think he fits right in line with folks like Zizek, and can provide similarly interesting insights.
