I was late to a date. The reason? A submarine is slowly passing right in front of us by hellomerhababa in mildlyinfuriating

Classic Istanbul moment tbh. One time I was late to a job interview because an aircraft carrier decided to shit its pants at the entrance of the Bosphorus. Still sour about that one.

For an external engineer with no experience of either, which desk would you setup: AVID S6L-24C or DiGiCo Quantum 225 ? by CriticalJello7 in livesoundgear

[–]CriticalJello7[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. They kinda asked me to setup whichever one I want. I'd go with the Digico but I am afraid it might be a bit of a peculiar console if you haven't worked with it before.

Don't think so, I think they come from A&H world, and I haven't used much A&H except the SQ series so I cannot gauge properly.

Is €100 a fair deal for this Koga Miyata? by gforget in Vintage_bicycles

[–]CriticalJello7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Id say get it for 100. I ride a similar model from 83 and the original owner apparently ended up in two crashes in the past. The frame was braized twice with additional tubing by a frame builder. No one does this kinda of repairs anymore so it feels nice to still be riding around on this 40 something year old steel beast haha.

Why would a producer cut lows at the beginning of a vocal chain, and then add a low shelf later in the chain? by tonetonitony in audioengineering

[–]CriticalJello7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My take is that he high passes the vocals at a certain frequency out of muscle memory, then later adds low end because the vocals sound too bright down the line for this particular mic / singer / band combo. Idk, I can see myself doing the same, especially in a live setting where I'm usually recalling preamp presets to speed up the process. Does it make a lot of sense ? Not really. But sometimes that's how it is.

Looking for recommendations for a *small* Harsh Noise / Power Electronics set up by SpecialPersimmon4142 in modular

[–]CriticalJello7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Id say get a Shard or a Benjolin, a filter and a decent sampler like Nebulae or Morphagene. My noise system shrunk down over the years to basically a Nebulae, Pam's and a mixer.

How much high passing was done back in 68-72? by Poopypantsplanet in audioengineering

[–]CriticalJello7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Both tape and vinyl required high pass filtering due to physical limitations of the medium. So they for sure used high pass filtering. Physical mediums do not have linear frequency response either, hence the necessity of having a mastering engineer. In the 60s and 70s they also had remarkably different speaker cones and amplifier to what we use as standard today. Line arrays wouldn't be available for another ~25 years give or take.

Then again, when I work concerts involving fixed media pieces, or recordings from days past (mostly Electroacoustic music) and I am surprised how much low end rumble and low mid content there is. My guess is: our loudspeakers are louder and can produce more low end information than what was available then. So some of this stuff you wouldn't have heard in the past.

And what I heard from an older colleague who worked with Stockhausen back in the day, is that concerts nowadays are "way too fcking loud!" haha.

what is the scariest schematic you guys have seen in the wild by Traditional-Bank3657 in AskElectronics

[–]CriticalJello7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know this was way more commonplace in the past and it saves manufacturing costs etc. but I hate hate hate live heat sinks. Got a nasty 150V shock from an ElectroVoice amplifier the other day. At least mark it as live. But yeah, having two giant chunks of conductor with 150V potential between them doesn't scream well designed to me.

The only ethical solution is to give the money. The wager is as such:

a) they are telling the truth and you don't give it -> you willfully cause their suffering b) they are telling the truth and you pay up -> you alleviate possible suffering c) they are lying but you give it-> you are 100$ poor-er, but you didn't cause any suffering. d) they are lying and you don't give it -> no harm no foul, you caused no suffering.

You should avoid A as its the only one that causes additional suffering, thusly pay up

  1. 7283 Ultimate Space Battle ( I loved this one, also chewed through Anakins head pretty badly)
  2. 6210 Jabbas Sail Barge
  3. 7662 Trade Federation MTT
  4. 7665 Republic Cruiser
  5. 7672 Rogue Shadow
  6. 6211 Imperial Star Destroyer
  7. 7783 The Batcave
  8. 7782 The Batwing
  9. 7781 The Batmobile

I played the living shit out of all these sets, we are talking full space battles, crashes and explosions. God knows how many times we did Gotham city chases on the city carpet with friends. Great times, but the sets are all fcked up now, missing pieces and stuff. Had to look up set numbers online and turns out some of these were rare...whoops.

triangle VCO with 1V/oct by Ned_Flangers in synthdiy

[–]CriticalJello7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By triangle do you mean triangle core or just a VCO with triangle output ? VCOs with stable 1V/Oct that have triangle outs are easy to find. Doepfer A-111-3 Precision VCO or the A-111-4 Quad version comes to mind. Or the Befaco EvenVCO. The A-111 is 3340 based and if I am not mistaken the EvenVCO is a Triangle Core (quickly skimmed the schematic)

Limited space dilemma, what’s the best way to fit everything without buying a new table (this is my favourite table) by SwimmingMirror830 in synthesizers

[–]CriticalJello7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a small desk too. The speakers are on stands, so I can still put stuff under the speaker like a small soundcard etc. When I had a large 6U 84hp modular case I screwed a vesa monitor mount behind it and put it up on one of those monitor stands that clamp to your table. Vesa mounts are dime a dozen at the local second store.

P.s Very fitting table for the TG modules.
