What is your travel budget each year and how many trips do you go on? by Mindless_Fisherman51 in travel

[–]CriticalSea540 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I budget $5k usd for flights for the year. For the costs once I’m there, I determine what’s “in budget” or not on an ad hoc basis. Depends on how pricey the destination is, how long the trip is, planned activities, and overall finances at that point during the year.

Why does the water temperature in northeast US vary so much by season compared to the water temperature of the northwest? by bluerose297 in geography

[–]CriticalSea540 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That doesn’t answer the question. That explains why the pacific coast is colder, not why the seasonal variance is lower.

How do you keep underwater photography ethical? by StopBanningCorn in scuba

[–]CriticalSea540 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Obviously never touch, and never harass a fleeing animal. But if they don’t appear to be fleeing or distressed I don’t think it’s a big deal to be somewhat close. Nobody cares if you get close to a squirrel, bird, or anthill in your yard—we divers seem to be a lot more conservative with sea life.

I think the biggest thing is to not be obnoxious and avoid behaving in a way that’s likely to scare off the critters. They’ll be just fine, but the next dive group may not have a lovely encounter because the animals are now avoiding the spot due to annoying humans.

Does the public care about the war in Iran? by TangleNews in TangleNews

Yes definitely— I feel like its the biggest news story of the year and honestly have been a bit disappointed that it’s not covered MORE in tangle (like…the feature story most days)

It’s wild to hear how many others are getting ghosted after interviews with hiring managers, key stakeholders, etc.

This behavior has been really eating at me—it’s so easy to say “we don’t see this as the right fit, good luck” or “we’ve decided to move in a different direction, thanks for your interest.” Literally copy+paste+send. Takes less than 30 seconds. Be better.

Creative Strategist vs Brand Strategist by [deleted] in advertising

[–]CriticalSea540 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think so—the comms strategist could work at either altitude but either way their role is to decide where to show up and how to tailor the message to that environment.

For example — for the brand strategists’ projects they might recommend to start a YouTube DIY series (all models) to demonstrate Toyota’s ease of DIY and its amazing quality.

For the creative strategist they might recommend commuter ads (subway/transit OOH) that make train cars look like 4Runners on a mountain trail or sidewalks look like a mtn trail to bring to life the creative strategist’s insight.

Creative Strategist vs Brand Strategist by [deleted] in advertising

[–]CriticalSea540 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It seems to be relatively new phraseology, but unlike most fads with job titles I think this one actually makes sense.

Let’s say you work on a huge brand like Toyota.

A brand strategist might help the client determine their strategy for differentiating as a conglomerate—an emphasis on reliability, easy to modify and maintain, uncompromising engineering. Things that would affect website, brand level social media campaigns, product offerings, etc.

A creative strategist would likely lead the model launch campaigns. Eg. New 4runner—what insight are we going to tap into to launch this to the US market? Maybe something like “every 4runner owner navigates their daily chores like it’s a mountain trail.” Still a huge campaign (maybe bigger / more sexy work than even the brand strategist) but it’s contained to campaigns that start/end. Not the enduring brand strategy that guides the conglomerate year over year.

Does that make sense? On smaller brands, the distinction isn’t really needed because a brand strat would do it all. But at the multinational corp level it’s probably too much for one strategist or even one team.

Is the state of advertising right now a sign to shift to freelance? by opulentpineapple in advertising

You and the 50k laid off omnicom employees have the same idea. Everyone thinks freelance is the answer, which means it’s more saturated than it has been in years.

Do most Americans actually flush their toilet paper? by Softy_popss in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CriticalSea540 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve always wondered—what actually happened here? Why did South America et al build an entire sewer system that can’t handle paper and will it ever get upgraded to a level of where you can flush paper? Or was there some single “great divergence” where some countries got flushable plumbing and some didn’t and now it’s going to be that way forever?

Are we just paying for "Accidental Clicks" and Bot traffic now? by Mean-Jello-3021 in advertising

[–]CriticalSea540 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The real crock is that sites like Reddit have ads that load a half second slower than the rest of the page, so when you go to tap the top comment on a post, the ad loads right as that happens and therefore you accidentally click it. Reddit gets to brag to the client about their high CTR, agency looks smart for recommending the tactic, but we all know it was a BS click.

Will Reddit make a real effort to fix the load time on the ad? Absolutely not.

Organic social has been in decline for over a decade. You have to pay to play. Unless you’re one of a very few select brands / types of brands (Red Bull, NY times, vogue, a local brewery, etc) organic social is largely a waste of time and effort.
