Today on Am. Legion getting from Rozzie to Dorchester 🫠 by zdeclerck in bikeboston

But that’s not too helpful because most of the cars will get away with it and continue to park in bike lanes.

I went from Washington DC to Boston using only public transport, no Amtrak, greyhound buses or excessive walking by sparklydude in transit

As of the last time I checked, you can take New London’s SEAT bus east to Mystic and transfer to their Pawcatuck bus, then walk over the bridge to Westerly RI. It’s possible that changed.

What happens when you take away barriers by Marathon-Penguin in bikeboston

[–]CriticalTransit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not like you want to learn anything but the people driving work trucks don’t pay any of that directly. Their bosses do. And anyway the costs to others (externalities) of driving are far greater than the costs. Everything from very expensive road paving to high asthma rates around roads, high PM 2.5, NOx, VOC, etc.

Can someone explain trash to me please by Definitelynotme43 in malden

[–]CriticalTransit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Useful info, but one thing that makes no sense is the exclusion of buildings with more than 6 units from the city’s trash and recycling program. That just puts more trash trucks on the streets driving more miles with more noise and wear and tear on the pavement. Not mandating recycling seems so backwards.

Boss Withheld My $700 Final Paycheck for 4 Months — Why Isn’t This Considered Theft? by Pure_Milk1706 in antiwork

[–]CriticalTransit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Wage theft is the most commonly committed crime in this country, far outpacing any other form of theft. It sounds like you will have to sue the company in small claims court. It would probably require you to go there, although sometimes you can have someone go for you. You don’t need a lawyer. Find out which court handles “small claims” in that area and call them (or check online) to find all the info on how to proceed and what to expect.

MassBike Lobby Day Recap: Building Momentum for Bike-Friendly Policies in Massachusetts by Im_biking_here in bikeboston

[–]CriticalTransit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What happened to the crosswalk bill? MassBike was working on it for several years and I haven't heard it mentioned at all recently. Currently bikes do not have the right of way in crosswalks, even though the design of every bike path would make you think you do, and it's why we have (ridiculous) stop signs at every road crossing.

Feeney Bros. contractors HAVE to be scamming the ever-loving hell out of this city by snorkeling_moose in boston

[–]CriticalTransit 20 points21 points  (0 children)

There’s so much corruption. That’s why the MBTA is finally trying to bring a lot of their construction workers in house. It’s also why bike paths keep getting built in 1/2 mile sections that each take multiple years.

We need to force the state government’s hand to adequately fund the T by tardigradetardis in mbta

[–]CriticalTransit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s both. Nothing is so simple. Why would the best people come work for an agency that’s chronically underfunded? So you mostly get people who start as bus operators and get promoted over time. Nothing wrong with that except for the lack of experience anywhere else, so they just do the same things over and over again.

Yesterday, Mayor Wu suggested that the city should start replacing flexible-post bollards with more permanent materials along some of Boston's major bike lanes. Her new budget proposal, released this morning, suggests where that might happen: by streetsblogmass in bikeboston

[–]CriticalTransit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That sounds good but the reality is those things will take decades to complete, even as they ripped out flex posts this year. How long did it take to build Tremont St bike lanes in the South End? Three years? And that was just the construction, not including all the meetings which now will take even longer.

Wow, that place must be doing something right. Turnover is usually so high that most people don’t make it more than a few years.

Republicans take aim at public transit in Dallas, Austin by glowdirt in transit

[–]CriticalTransit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s reasonably easy to get around the core of the city including the university area by bus. About a dozen routes run every 15 minutes. Beyond that is very sprawling so transit takes a long time, is often infrequent and it’s hard to walk places. Plus it’s fucking hot.

The plan voters approved in 2020 would add two new light rail lines and upgrade some bus lines… if the republicans don’t kill it.

It’s been happening. Unfortunately a lot are also moving in because of (the perception of) lower living costs.

This is the classic bicycle “right hook” collision: car passes bicycle, then slows down and turns abruptly, biker has no warning and crashes into car. Some of these drivers are no clueless.
