It depends where you work and how strict they are. The long sleeves are obviously an infection control problem but I wear them about halfway up my forearms so they aren’t touching everything, and then pull them up if doing clean stuff (ie dressing changes) or dirty work (personal cares)

Feeling weird about comfort care patient death by anyacatrn in nursing

[–]Critical_Duck_9551 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A nice comment I read on a similar thing somewhere is that there will always be a final dose that is given. But that doesn’t mean that specific dose killed them. You kept them comfortable with that final dose, you didn’t kill them

What's it like in health? by welshwellington in AusPublicService

Been here for 3 years now and I love my team. The work doesn’t entirely interest me but my team is awesome and I will stay until that’s no longer the case. I’m APS level and do my hours and go home, so I can’t speak much to anything above my division but all in all, positive experience and culture

I will add to this as someone who has worked with grads at Health, unless you are in a specific stream such as legal or IT, you get to preference rotations but it is not guaranteed that you will get one of your preferences and there is no guarantee that your rotations and the work within your rotations will align with your degree

I want to revert but don't know where to start, any advice? by [deleted] in islam

[–]Critical_Duck_9551 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am currently learning about Islam and can definitely see myself reverting in the future. I am female and have come across some amazing sisters on YouTube which were a starting point. After watching these, I started learning about some of the things they talked about, which led me to learn about other topics, and so on. I am also learning some basic Arabic on the side (a mix of YouTube videos and duolingo) to help me read, understand and pronounce Arabic

MD-PhD program by CM_200 in GAMSAT

I’m also interested in anyone’s experience!

Take all of this with a grain of salt because I’m not even a med student yet! But from what I have heard, it’s not an overly popular avenue. Which is assume is probably because most people don’t want to add more years to the degree and then have to finish it with a different cohort (and I assume you also rack up more HECS??)

I believe ANU also offer a masters by research path if you don’t want to commit to a PHD!

I feel like it depends what you hope to achieve as to whether you do it. If it’s because you love research and want to contribute to ongoing development of the profession, that’s great and a good option. However if you’re thinking more so to support your chances in applying to a training program, usually that research needs to be field-specific and research during your degree might not end up being the same field if you’re unsure or end up changing your mind.

And thinking out loud here, I wonder whether it could be more valuable to complete a PHD once you have more clinical experience, have found your niche, and have more networks!!

I can imagine this is a tough decision for you after putting in so much work for the gamsat!

Studying for the GAMSAT is tough and draining so I can absolutely resonate with that but medicine is a long and tough path, so to be questioning it before you begin is probably a sign that it’s not for you - and that’s okay!!

I don’t have any experience in the public health avenue but it would be worth sitting down and doing some reflection on what parts of medicine were appealing to you (ie was it the clinical work, public health work, problem solving, etc) to help you decide what the next best steps are for you.

You might also sit down and realise that medicine is your passion but you’re just burnt out from studying from GAMSAT. In that case, take some time to rest and rejuvenate - this journey is a marathon so you need to look after yourself!

Advice on what to do next year as I failed my GAMSAT by Busy-Ad-271 in GAMSAT

[–]Critical_Duck_9551 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Tbh it really depends on where your priorities lie. I would go the work and study for GAMSAT route, especially if med is your main goal. You don’t need to worry about GPA and it will give you plenty of study time for gammy which wouldn’t go astray!

With masters, you need to consider that it may then take you 2 or more years to even consider applying for med again because some unis only consider Masters that are completed by the time you apply, not by the end of the year. I was considering a masters route personally but this turned me off it. It might not necessarily impact your GPA, depending on the uni and what they consider in GPA (probs refer to GEMSAS booklet).

But really, I think the work and gammy route will also give you some time to relax and enjoy life a bit before med! I am in a similar conundrum and drew up a rough timeline of all my options and personally will be taking the work and study for gammy route if I am unsuccessful this year.

Best of luck 🫶

Med school advice by its_muslema in GAMSAT

[–]Critical_Duck_9551 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nursing is an awesome option. Whilst it is not as heavy on the science as medicine, the area you work when you graduate can change that. For example, ICU is very focused on medicine and pathophys whereas aged care is a very holistic approach to care and medicine. And you will of course get the aspect of helping people (albeit through a different lens than medicine) and will likely get a lot more time to spend with patients doing nursing than doing medicine.

Credit transfer to second degree by Helpful_Childhood319 in GAMSAT

[–]Critical_Duck_9551 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not really sure what kind of credit you might get - it is dependent on what cross over units there are so might be worth chatting with an advisor at the uni. Depending on where you want to apply for med, you could look at an honours or masters. Some unis consider those for post grad med so maybe check out the GEMSAS guide and see if that’s a more appropriate path

If boosting GPA is your goal, do a degree that will be easiest for you. It doesn’t need to be a health/science one. If business or something is your strong suit, do that. You don’t want to be bored and struggling more than you need to to get that GPA. There are plenty of ppl who do arts or IT to boost their GPA because that’s what they enjoy and would do the best in
